Lilia Calderu was born into a lineage steeped in both nobility and the arcane, a descendant of the First Baron Mordo and his mistress Miarka. As the Queen of her people, she often projected the image of a wizened crone, a calculated piece of theatricality designed to bolster her mystical reputation among outsiders. Her true power, however, was anchored in her membership within an elite coven of sorceresses alongside Maria Russoff and Margali Szardos. Together, these women wove a tapestry of divination that shaped the future of magic, most notably when they sensed the dormant, world-shaking potential within a young Wanda Maximoff. Lilia herself utilized the legendary Book of Cagliostro to pinpoint the exact moment the girl’s reality-warping abilities would first stir, an act of foresight that would draw the attention of the darkest entities in the multiverse.

Her downfall was precipitated by her trust in Baron Karl Mordo, who ruthlessly exploited her affections to gain access to the Book of Cagliostro. Under his influence, Lilia performed a feat of staggering complexity, summoning the ancient Serpent Crown from the frozen ruins of Antarctica through a one-time ritual of immense power. This dangerous era culminated in a chaotic confrontation at Castle Russoff involving werewolves, rival sorcerers, and the terrifying intrusion of the Elder God Chthon, who intervened to banish the Serpent Crown back to the depths. Though the battle ended, the deeper damage was already done; Mordo abandoned Lilia, absconding with the Book and leaving her heart shattered. He left her unaware that their brief, tragic union had produced a daughter, Astrid, who was destined to eventually seek retribution for her mother’s betrayal. She later worked with Doctor Strange to try to get revenge on Mordo.

Appearance: Lilia Calderu has a fair skin. Her black hair falls down to her shoulders with short front bangs. A large golden headpiece formed from tightly coiled sculpted snakes with three prominent snake heads sits atop her head. A golden ornament with an oval center piece and small round border beads rests on her forehead. Her eyes are blue. A voluminous purple fabric with heavily fringed edges drapes around her shoulders and arms. She wears a metallic golden bustier top that deeply exposes her cleavage and the upper curves of her breasts. The upper rim of the bustier features a scalloped border detailed with repeating round embossed shapes. Below the bustier, a row of dangling oblong golden pieces hangs over a gathered blue garment covering her midsection. Two thick, smooth golden bangles encircle her right forearm, and one matching thick golden bangle wraps around her left wrist.

Personality: Lilia Calderu is a woman who understands the power of perception, masterfully maintaining a facade of a frail, aged crone to command respect and fear as a queen among her people. This theatricality hides a sharp, strategic mind and a deep mastery of the mystic arts that makes her a peer to some of the most dangerous casters in the world. Despite this external strength, she possesses a tragic capacity for trust—an emotional vulnerability that sits in direct conflict with her role as a secretive guardian of ancient knowledge. Her dedication to her people and their traditions is absolute, yet it is her own yearning for a connection beyond duty that ultimately leaves her exposed to those who view love as merely another weapon in their arsenal.

Her life is anchored by her membership in a powerful sorceress coven alongside Maria Russoff and Margali Szardos, a sisterhood of necessity where their collective divinations shaped the mystical landscape. This professional bond stands in stark contrast to the devastating betrayal she suffered at the hands of Baron Karl Mordo. Lilia was genuinely romanced by Mordo, unaware that his affection was a calculated ruse to strip her of the Book of Cagliostro and access the Serpent Crown. This relationship not only shattered her spirit but also produced her daughter, Astrid, the physical manifestation of a legacy built on heartbreak. Beyond her immediate circle, Lilia's most significant connection was to the young Wanda Maximoff, whom she viewed through the lens of prophecy, recognizing the girl's world-altering potential long before the Scarlet Witch became a reality.

Lilia Calderu is a proficient magic user, capable of wielding significant mystical energy to perform complex rituals and maintain intricate illusions. Her expertise in the arcane allows her to tap into extra-dimensional power sources, manipulate the fabric of reality through ancient spells, and perceive future events through advanced divination techniques.
