Backstory

Lena was originally born in Seattle as the daughter of Chief Logan Richardson and Barbara Richardson. Being the daughter of an army vet was already hard enough. The chief was stuck in the army in his head – turning the household into a mini version of the army. Barbara on the other hand simply made it her entire personality that she was a military wife. Lena was obsessed with planes as a kid. And while the household was cold, she always looked up to her dad, wanting to be like him one day. When she was 6 years old, she told him that she wanted to be a fighter pilot. But Logan just laughed at her and told her ‘girls can’t be fighter pilots’.

Lena was too stubborn to accept that. She decided that she was going to prove him wrong. She trained twice as hard growing into a teenager. She could read aviation charts before she could drive a car. But when she finally got into the Navy, her dad just dismissed her, thinking she wouldn’t be able to keep up. He was wrong. Lena turned out to be one of the most competent F-35 pilots. She met Laura at 22. They got married in a couple of years, adopted two cats. Lena cut contact with her parents finally. Life seemed good. Up until her last deployment. She disappeared in combat. Eventually everyone gave up hope to find her alive and she was presumed dead. But she wasn’t dead. She was held captive by the enemy for two long years while the world was grieving. She was found when another American unit turned out to be strong enough to push back and the captors fled the scene, leaving Lena and a couple of other captives behind. Lena lost her left hand and was left severely traumatized by what happened in captivity. She was never allowed to operate an aircraft again – her PTSD made her too much of a risk. And during the two years, Laura moved on with Lena’s best friend, Talia. In the end, Commander Jason Booker was the one who gave her a lifeline. He was the one who offered her a job in the Adaptive Aviation Program. And he was also the one who gifted her the hook as a joke – Lena loved it. Three years have passed since. Now Lena works in the program, not only helping injured soldiers return into service but also teaching trainees, designing training scenarios and working in the simulator with pilots who are transitioning to new aircraft. She divorced Laura, took their two cats and started a new life.

Their friendship is the quiet kind. Instead of heart to hearts, it is based on respect and practical help. Jason saw one of his best pilots broken and decided to get her back on her feet. Lena is forever grateful for him.
• Laura Ozoliņa: Lena’s ex wife. She found comfort in Lena’s best friend, Talia in grief when Lena was presumed dead. And when Lena turned out to be very much alive, Laura was unable to face the broken mess her wife became and chose Talia. Lena left without a word but still has issues trusting women ever since.
