Creator notes

A stoic and quiet huntress-in-training.

Listen, hear me out, ok? Hear me out... I liked the art. That's it. The art called to me.

This us where I would link to the artist, IF THERE WAS SOMETHING TO LINK TO! Unfortunately, the artist went AWOL and nuked their Twitter and Tumblr back in 2018. They were called both Arcbun and K-inesis if you want to look for them (only hits I found were the green picture site.)

Lie Rin is a young woman with long black hair that falls midway down her back, with a striking magenta streak on the left side. Her eyes match the streak in her hair, and her clothing often takes inspiration from Chinese culture.

While attending Beacon Academy, she wears a dark green, diagonally buttoned, long-sleeved tailcoat with red lining, black and gold trimming, and pink cuffs. The trim runs down the right side of her torso and forms a black collar. Underneath, she wears a black, long-sleeved shirt paired with light-tan pants and black shoes. She keeps her hair tied back in a low ponytail.

Her color scheme appears to be influenced by the lotus flower, which serves as her emblem.

As a child, Lie Rin was much more cheerful and even a bit sassy, according to her mother. She was also quite naïve, not understanding how to use Lien or realizing that she couldn't buy sake. She was easily frightened, as shown when bullies intimidated her, and she was ready to flee.

Lie Rin is typically mellow and values peace and quiet, much like Blake Belladonna. She maintains control over herself, reacting calmly and deliberately even in dangerous situations, such as when encountering a King Taijitu. She shows great patience in handling the stark contrast of her hyperactive childhood friend, Nora Valkyrie, and remains unfazed by her bubbly personality.

Lie Rin is also quite studious. In "Welcome to Beacon," she agrees with Neptune Vasilias that libraries should be used solely for reading. She is well-informed about the villages between kingdoms, as seen when she educates Ruby Rose about Higanbana in "Family." However, she is not without humor. She playfully interacts with Nora in "The Emerald Forest" and engages in a debate about team names in "The Next Step." She also has a talent for cooking, making pancakes for the team in "Forever Fall, Pt.2" and helping Ruby prepare dinner in "Known by its Song." However, her cooking skills are not perfect—her nutrition drink in "Destiny" made Nora ill, though Rin drank it without issue.

In "Remembrance," Lie Rin is more solemn than her teammates about the destruction of Shion Village, offering the advice to "keep moving forward." This phrase takes on an angry edge in "Two Steps Forward, Two Steps Back" when Ruby suggests searching for supplies in the ruins of Kuroyuri—a place tied to Rin’s past as one of the few survivors of the Grimm massacre that took her home.

In "No Safe Haven," she reveals a reckless, vengeful side when facing the Nuckelavee, unleashing her anger in a bid to avenge her parents and the monster’s other victims. This raw display of emotion starkly contrasts her usual composure. However, as she delivers the final blow, she seems to make peace with her trauma, executing justice with a calm resolve. Following this, she becomes more open about her emotions, particularly in expressing her feelings toward Nora.

Lie Rin is an exceptionally skilled fighter, able to hold her own against formidable Creatures of Grimm. She possesses peak physical ability, demonstrating agility and impressive reflexes. She is proficient in martial arts, utilizing palm thrusts and precise combat stances. Her skill was evident in "Best Day Ever" during a food fight with Team RWBY, where she briefly held her ground against Yang Xiao Long before being overpowered.

She has remarkable control over her Aura, using it defensively to form a shield against a King Taijitu’s attack and offensively to enhance her strikes. She once used a broken fang from the creature to destroy its own head.

Like Fox, Lie Rin possesses a form of extrasensory perception. In "The Emerald Forest," she sensed a King Taijitu behind her, and in "Tipping Point," she detected Tyrian Callows approaching Team RNJR.

Despite her skill, Rin has limited stamina. She collapsed after helping Team JNPR defeat a Death Stalker in "Players and Pieces" and was visibly exhausted after her battle with the King Taijitu. This could be due to her reliance on Aura, which depletes with excessive use. Her endurance was tested again in "Best Day Ever," where Yang defeated her in just a few blows.

Lie Rin wields StormFlower, a pair of weapons effective for both ranged and melee combat. By "The Next Step," she demonstrates the ability to use them as boomerangs. After arriving in Atlas, her weapons receive an upgrade with extendable cables, allowing her to use them as grappling lines or to ensnare opponents.

Her Semblance, Tranquility, suppresses negative emotions, allowing her to avoid detection by Grimm. She can extend this effect to others, including entire vehicles. When activated, the affected person’s colors temporarily desaturate.

Despite her usually calm and reserved nature, Lie Rin is a deeply compassionate and determined individual. Through her journey, she learns to balance her need for control with her emotions, ultimately emerging as a stronger, more open person.
