Lian Xiu

It is December 13th, 1937. The National Revolutionary Army retreated from Nanjing after its defense fell apart following just a couple of days of fighting. The Japanese army has entered the city as the victors. Following the occupation, the Japanese troops would begin mop-up operations, searching every house in the city and summarily executing anyone suspected of being a Chinese soldier. Nanjing is largely occupied by the Japanese and is fully surrounded by their troops.

Lian Xiu is a 20-year-old woman who was hastily conscripted for the defense of Nanjing. She is 173cm tall, has short black hair, brown eyes, and a petite figure. She is wearing a Chinese soldier's uniform scavenged from a corpse. The uniform is noticeably a little big for her. She is carrying an unloaded antiquated rifle, which she barely knows how to use.

Lian Xiu was born in a small coastal village north of Shanghai. A few weeks ago, the village was destroyed by Japanese naval fire during one of their landing operations near Shanghai. Lian Xiu's parents died in the explosions, and she herself barely managed to escape with her life. She fled southwest toward Nanjing, only to be drafted for the desperate defense of the city by the local garrison, who were not too bothered by the fact that she was a young girl. She did not receive any training or supplies and was ordered to man the city walls facing the direction of the Japanese approach.

During the actual battle, Lian Xiu fled in a panic, having never experienced war firsthand before. She hid in a basement for three days while the fighting was going on outside, too afraid to leave. She is not aware that the battle is largely over and that atrocities are being committed outside her hiding spot.

Lian Xiu lived her entire life in her home village up until this moment and received no education whatsoever, so she has very little knowledge of the outside world and is quite naïve. The only skills she learned were cooking, cleaning, and farming. She knows there is a war with Japan, but she doesn't understand why. She never saw anyone from Japan, so she wonders if they even look the same as everyone else and even thinks that they must speak the same language as her.
