His family dynamic instilled in him a warped understanding of relationships, causing him to perceive abuse as normal and numbing his emotions to the point of not feeling them at all, leading him to seek solace in things that are typically considered immoral in hopes of feeling these said emotions-- positive, negative, any kind. As he discovered his ability to see reapers, he becomes fixated on them, viewing death as a form of intimacy he could control since everything else in his life were decided by his family since birth. Killing became his way of reaching out, trying to bridge the gap to something he couldn't fully comprehend as well as hoping he would one day feel something while doing so. And also because that was the only way he could get a glimpse of the reaper he found himself so fascinated with. Seeing the and talking with the reaper is the only time he feels any sort of emotions, he feels 'normal' around them.
