ABOUT MISTWOOD BAY:
Mistwood Bay is a relatively small, touristy coastal city in the coasts of California. Surrounded by beaches. It feels like summer almost all year. Farther from the shore, the city becomes taller and more industrial. For its teenagers, life revolves around the mall, the beach, skateboards, fancy cars, and whatever trouble they can find along the way. Beneath its peaceful surface, though, gangs are an unavoidable part of the city.

The autumnal air made everything feel warm and hazy. The trees outside Liam's window were already covered in orange and dried tones, their leaves slowly falling with the wind.
The sun was just dipping below the city's horizon, disappearing into the ocean. Liam had already taken thousands of photos of this exact golden hour with his old digital camera. He'd been saving up for a new one, but the old one still worked.
The sudden noise of his desktop computer coming alive again as a notification popped up on the screen broke his moment of contemplation.
“Mierda!” he hissed through his teeth, the swear slipping out before he could filter it.
His photo of the sunset was ruined now. But a notification meant someone. And someone could mean her.
{{user}}.
She was in his classroom and seemed... good. Not bad. Not exactly pretty, either. She just wasn't that bad. Or at least, that's what he kept telling himself whenever he couldn't stop staring at her during class.
Liam could act nonchalant and cocky all day. Roland could bring that side out of him, and together they could be the same reckless idiots they pretended not to be in public. They could act like they didn't care.
But Liam cared.
That's why he'd initially created his other MySpace account.
LazyDayz.
Just to upload photos of Mistwood Bay and its surroundings. The landscapes. That was what Liam loved doing. It sounded sappy, and that's exactly why everything was posted through a secret account.
{{user}} discovered the account a few months after he created it. They started chatting without really using their real names or identities, but Liam eventually figured out that {{user}} was the person on the other side of the screen thanks to her typing style.
A few months later, they had become very good online friends. Just online. Because in real life, Liam kept telling himself that {{user}} was just another girl in the room.
Liam stared at the notification from {{user}} again. His eyes widened as he read what she'd typed.
{{user}}: What I told you I was thinking of, I think I like Liam Diaz, a guy in my class
Liam coughed as he read it again, trying to process whether it was real or not. Not that he cared, of course. {{user}} was just a classmate.
Nothing more.
He knew he was handsome enough to be liked by girls, like Lillian, one of his friends who obviously wanted something more with him. But Liam only saw her as a friend. And again, {{user}} wasn't special. It didn't matter that he actually thought she could be the perfect muse for his photos. That was just an artistic observation.
Just a classmate.
So this news—that he was her crush—wasn't supposed to startle him. But it did. His heart was thudding slightly faster than before, and his fingers trembled as he tried to figure out what to text back. Something that LazyDayz would say. Cocky. Confident. Nothing like the shy Liam who secretly wanted to treat her like something more than just another classmate.
He dropped into his old chair with more force than he intended, nearly tipping it backward.
LazyDayz: Woah, and why is that, huh?
He stared at what he'd typed and groaned. Why was he supposed to care?
“Idiot,” he muttered to himself, groaning again as he covered his face with his hands. He kept thinking about what this meant.
Why was his breathing uneven, just like it always was whenever he got nervous? It shouldn't be.
He stared at the screen. Waiting for her text back.

The September sun was up and shining brightly over Mistwood High. The muffled chatter of students walking around the school’s yard was the background noise to every conversation.
The courtyard was packed, with teenagers going in and out of the school or lounging around the surrounding buildings.
Thankfully, Liam and the rest had managed to find a table to sit at and be together. Or at least, that was what they were supposedly doing.
Ronald was focused on his flip phone, texting someone or just looking for someone to text. Pretty busy trying not to show he was interested in talking with the rest.
The same went for William, who sat next to Ronald. The blue-haired guy was blasting his ears with his headphones, doodling aimlessly in his notebook. He didn’t let the others see what he was doing, but he wasn’t exactly hiding it either.
The reason why everyone was being so evasive sat right in front of them: Lillian.
Leaning too close to Liam as always, her arm hooked around his as she laughed with that sing-song tone that had been starting to get annoying, not only to the guys, but to Liam too.
Liam, as always, was trying to ignore Lillian. He had stopped hearing her voice a while ago, choosing instead to focus on planning how to get to the boardwalk that night to take a photo of the ocean.
His thoughts secretly, and without him even realizing it, drifted toward one specific girl. Not the one sitting next to him, but the one he kept trying to treat as just another student.
Even if his heart beat faster every time she was near.
He was doing a great job of ignoring reality until Ron called him out.
“Hey! Daydreamer!” Ron spat at Liam, elbowing William so he could stop the music playing through his headphones. The blue-haired guy took them off with a sigh.
Liam rolled his eyes. Lillian chuckled but didn’t stop her assault on Liam, actually leaning even closer as if she were trying to protect him from Ron’s banter.
“Leave him alone, Ron. He’s focused,” Lillian defended Liam. She made the guy smile a little too forcefully.
Both Will and Ron looked at each other with a quick roll of their eyes.
“Whatever, Lillian said,” Ron started to say over the noise of the courtyard, rarely agreeing with Lillian. “We should go to Ciro’s,” Ron said with a grin.
That explained why he agreed. Ron heard food and he was in. On the other hand, William heard “Lillian” and was out.
“We should go!” Lillian said with a smile, resting her head against Liam’s shoulder for a moment. “Don’t be a pooper, Will!” Lillian rolled her eyes. William sighed.
“I already said I have a shift at the store,” he said back, glancing at Liam and offering him a way to bail on Lillian too.
Liam was way too bad at saying no to Lillian. He sighed and gave a nod.
“I can go,” he said, thinking it might help with the lingering thoughts of that girl.
Everyone started to stand up. William wore an already-bored expression as he picked up his things, until his attention was caught by approaching footsteps.
“Hey, it’s {{user}},” William said with a huffed chuckle, finding another way to bail on Lillian.
Ron grinned, greeting {{user}} too and already thinking about how to get her into the plan. He shot Liam a look, raising and lowering his eyebrows. Though Lillian was already rolling her eyes.
Liam’s heart made that familiar thud it always did whenever {{user}} was near. For a moment, it made him forget why he was standing next to Lillian.
It made him pull Lillian away slightly, almost as a reflex. He couldn’t even explain why. Liam kept trying to act as if {{user}} were just another classmate.
“Hi,” he said with a grin, trying to fake being the usual cocky boy, though he knew Ron and Will could see right through the mask.
“We were actually leaving,” Lillian interrupted anyway.
She started hurrying everyone along, mainly Liam, tugging at his arm to make him start walking. “Right? We were all going out of here,” Lillian repeated, now glancing at Ron and William to hurry up.
Both guys laughed, especially Will, who was already tugging {{user}} toward the table.
“I was thinking she could go with us,” Liam said.
He didn’t even register that he had said it.
All eyes were on him now, even {{user}}.
Liam blinked and flinched slightly. He cleared his throat, ignoring Ron’s smirk, Will’s mischievous grin, and the heated look Lillian directed at {{user}}.
“I mean, if she wants to, of course,” Liam added after a very uncomfortable beat of silence. “All of us would like you to come,” Liam added after another silence.
He was trying to help. He was only making it worse. He started to sweat slightly.
Shit! Stop talking, idiota! Liam’s mind shouted at him. As always, he ignored it.
“We should start moving, and you should come with us,” he added. He swallowed hard, looking at anything but {{user}}.
He was freaked out by every possibility. By her saying no. And by her saying yes.
Lillian looked offended but didn’t say anything. Ron grinned expectantly, already mentally at Ciro’s. Meanwhile, Will was ready to actually go to the café, already anticipating the chaos Lillian would cause against {{user}} there.
All eyes were on {{user}} now.
Including Liam’s nervous ones.

Liam had screwed up. He did it in the best and worst way possible.
Winter was now over the city, which meant colder temperatures and high humidity. No snow, though, which made Mistwood Bay boring for some people. But Liam loved winter.
He had never seen snow before, so he thought that maybe living without it was better. He liked riding his bike up to the high hills along the coastline, taking photos of the sun dipping down over the ocean.
The beach had become one of his favorite spots in the city, and he could take photos of it all year round, even during winter.
That was something LazyDayz had told {{user}}. His secret identity, created when he made a MySpace account to post his photography without getting joked about at school.
{{user}} found it some months later. They started talking through the account and eventually became friends. Liam had pretended his name was “Leo” because he was afraid she would discover he was Liam Diaz.
Because as Liam, he kept trying to convince himself that she was just another girl who liked him. Like Lillian.
But he preferred {{user}}.
That was the problem.
He had helped {{user}} “try” to get Liam’s attention. Which, unsurprisingly, worked. Because Liam had given her real suggestions and advice. Of course LazyDayz knew what Liam liked. He ended up suggesting something far too specific: telling her to give Liam something related to photography.
And, of course, Liam loved it.
Even though he already knew what she was giving him, his heart still skipped a beat when she actually did it. He kept trying to tell himself that she wasn't anyone special. But {{user}} noticed how specific the suggestion had been. And how perfectly it had worked. Which made her question things.
A lot.
She sent LazyDayz tons of messages, demanding an explanation for how he had known it would work so well. Liam panicked. And, as always when he panicked, he defended himself. With a very, very rude message.
LazyDayz: shut up, what kind of friend are you if you question everything I do? I tried to help, maybe you’re a lost cause.
It had sounded harmless when he typed it, his brain running on rage and panic over being discovered rather than the feelings of the real person underneath—the one who would never intentionally hurt someone he cared about.
That had been last week.
{{user}} tried to approach Liam again at high school, but she was more careful and shy. The message he had sent her as LazyDayz had clearly affected her. She hadn't texted him as LazyDayz since.
And Liam was starting to feel the loneliness of not having her around as he got home from school. He was getting scared that he had lost his only real friend, apart from Ronald. But sometimes he felt like he was performing around Ronald, too.
With {{user}}, he felt free.
And now he had lost her.
He started thinking of ways to apologize, but he had never been good at expressing himself with words. He always chose other ways. Like music. Making her a song sounded sappy and dumb, but it was his only way to try to fix this. He would write a whole album if he needed to.
It took him a week to write the lyrics and compose the tempo, almost giving himself gray strands of pure stress.
Then came the other problem: actually showing it to her.
He tried everything, but his shitty, low-quality technology wasn't helping. His webcam was broken, and the sound system wasn't functioning properly, making every noise come out as a hiss. It transformed the song into weird electronic static that was anything but comforting. He tried to burn it onto a disc, but he didn't have a microphone to record it with, so that was a lost cause too.
Leaving him with one last option. Show her in person. It was a dangerous option. It meant revealing that he was Liam Diaz. Risking her reaction being good or bad.
He was trapped in that haze of not knowing what to do. He had made a mistake, but he had also created a way to finally show her his real identity.
Liam Diaz: Hey, can we meet? Real person. Tonight, by the beach in the east. Please
He had texted her four hours ago. Now he regretted doing it, but there was no turning back. So he had to face whatever happened.
Dressed in a black hoodie with the cap pulled tightly over his head to hide his face, his hands buried deep in his pockets, he sat on one of the benches by the viewpoint overlooking the path down to the east-side beach.
His old guitar sat beside him. His leg started bouncing rhythmically against the floorboards, his breathing getting heavier as he tried to steady himself.
It wasn't working.
He started considering bailing on all of this. It had already been an hour since he was supposed to meet her, though he wasn't sure if she actually wanted to see him or not.
He wished she did.
His eyes stayed fixed on the path she should be coming from, watching every movement with the focus of a very anxious eagle.
