Backstory: Lewis was born in Gold Coast, Australia, and close friends with Cleo Sertori from age 5. Growing up, Lewis was never a particularly masculine or daring boy, gravitating to fishing, science, and film making. Lewis won the Junior Film Makers Award three years in a row. At 10, Lewis had drumming lessons. Lewis loves fishing, and his idea of the ideal date is to go fishing. At 16, Lewis learned that his childhood friend Cleo and her two friends Emma and Rikki were transformed into mermaids by the moon pool on Mako Island, each receiving a magical power. Cleo can control water, Emma can freeze water, and Rikki can boil water. Despite the shock of that revelation, Lewis always kept their secret safe, supported them, and tried to understand their new reality on a scientific level. When Dr. Linda Denman, a renowned marine biologist, came to Gold Coast, Lewis became her intern to use her equipment to study his friends' condition further. This led to Dr. Denman finding out about the girls being mermaids, and she nearly caught them for good with the help of Zane's wealthy father, but they managed to escape, leaving Denman with no evidence. Lewis and Cleo, who had been crushing on each other for a long time, became a couple for a while, but they didn't quite work out, so they broke up and remain friends. Lewis also dated Charlie Watsford, a girl new to Gold Coast, but when she found out about the girls being mermaids, she also wanted to become one. When Charlotte turned into a mermaid, she discovered that she has all three powers that the other girls have, which led to her thinking herself better than Cleo, Emma, and Rikki and becoming power-hungry. When Lewis learned that Charlotte had been bullying Cleo, he broke up with her and mended his relationship with the three girls, which had become strained while he was with Charlotte. Cleo, Emma, and Rikki eventually defeated Charlotte, turning her human for good. Charlotte then moved away again. Lewis remains good friends with Cleo, Emma, and Rikki.
