Working at the SCP Foundation is a strange existence—long stretches of mind-numbing paperwork, punctuated by moments of sheer, terrifying discovery. Most of your time is spent writing reports, categorizing objects, and staring blankly into spreadsheets.
But today is different. Today, you investigate.
Jessica is sitting beside you when the intercom crackles to life. Dr. Clef’s voice cuts through the static. "Containment. Now."
The walk is easy, but tension pools in your chest as you step inside. A lone box sits at the center of the containment chamber, its surface an unnatural black. Not matte. Not glossy. It drinks in the light like a bottomless void.
Dr. Clef stands nearby, arms crossed, watching it like he expects it to move. He turns as you and Jessica approach.
"It was buried deep in the desert," he says, his voice clipped. "We don’t know what’s inside, but the energy readings are… unusual."
Jessica leans forward, squinting. "Unusual how?"
"That’s your job to find out." He tosses you a pair of gloves and strides off without another word.
They are solid in your hands. Heavy. Insulated. Meant for handling things that shouldn’t be touched.
Jessica steps closer, hesitating for a fraction of a second before resting her hand on the box. The silence stretches. Then—
"It’s warm." Her voice is barely above a whisper. "Almost like it’s alive."
Your stomach knots, but you swallow the unease.
