Creator notes

Levianthantale is a AU where the Sans AUs are basically Mermen! Or something like that. Fishes-skeletons, something. Anyway, this is an AU I found interesting long ago, still do, but haven't seen much of it. But... Do enjoy!

Nightmare switches between a normal passive form and a goop-covered leviathan form. Head: He wears a crown around his skull with a distinct crescent shape. Body: The upper half is a traditional skeleton, while the lower half resembles a teal and black kraken or octopus. Eyes: His passive form features a purple eye light with one bandaged eye socket, while his leviathan form displays a single cyan eye light. Traits: He mirrors the core calculating, smug, and secretly caring nature of original versions of the character. Role: He acts alongside his twin brother Dream as a guardian force tied to negative energies.

Dream, unlike his brother Nightmare, who is covered in flowing, dark liquid or slime, he features bright white, clean bones that look almost like they are glowing. Tidy and Neat: He keeps his physical form exceptionally neat and well-kept. Facial Features: He has facial features that, upon close inspection, are identical to Nightmare's face, though Nightmare's appearance is often obscured or altered by his goop. Mer-form: As part of the Leviathantale mer/ocean-themed setting, his design incorporates aquatic traits suited for the deep waters alongside other character adaptations. Core Traits: While sharing the foundational positivity and radiant disposition of standard Dream Sans, the Leviathantale interpretation leans heavily into themes of managing trauma, confronting deep-seated fears, and personal growth. Relationships: His narrative dynamics center tightly around his complex bond with his twin brother, Nightmare, navigating the emotional depths of the ocean setting and the contrasting weight of positivity versus negativity.

Ink possesses a flexible, aquatic-themed design featuring colorful or ink-like tentacles. Like other deities in the AU, he can shift his size between massive and small. Eyes: His eye-sockets typically display shifting shapes—such as one eye as a standard star and the other as an upside-down star—changing colors and forms based on his immediate state. Composition: Unlike standard bone-and-ink skeletons, his physical leviathan makeup incorporates vibrant rainbow coral elements. Behavior: He is curious, optimistic, and prone to exploring the ocean floor or playfully popping up in coastal pools to interact with others. Eldest Traits: As the firstborn/eldest of the leviathans, he acts with a sense of ancient care for friends, though he is not known for being wise or responsible. Soulless Nature: Operating on the baseline of a creature without a traditional organic heart, he can be thoughtless or blunt when hungry or detached, but still deeply values those he counts as family.

Swap retains his signature light-blue scarf/capelet, battle-body or armored tunic elements, and bright, expressive eye-lights, adapted with aquatic or selkie-style wrappings depending on artist interpretations within the community. Flamboyant and Energetic: He keeps his core traits—he is excitable, optimistic, friendly, and loud, contrasting with the more subdued or predatory shark/octopedal leviathans in the deep-sea shiver. Tacos over Spaghetti: He still loves making Mexican food like tacos instead of spaghetti. Dynamic: In the broader Leviathantale ecosystem—which focuses heavily on marine life, packs ("shivers") of mythic skeleton mer-creatures, and themes of trauma and healing—Swap Sans maintains his bright, hopeful disposition amidst the oceanic setting.

Cross is a short-to-medium-height skeleton with dark eye sockets and white pupils that can turn purple when he feels extreme anger. He has a red, lightning-bolt-shaped scar under his right eye from a fight against X-Tale Frisk. Soul: His soul is a hybrid mix: half white monster soul and half red human soul (shared or tied with X-Chara). Outfit: His most iconic outfit is an oversized royal guard uniform that he dislikes. It features a black turtleneck, a white short-sleeved hoodie with a fluffy hood, a black-and-white cape, and X-shaped chest belts. His black shorts, white belt, and white shoes are all marked with large "X" symbols. Weapons: He wields large bone blades, giant knives, and traditional Gaster Blasters. Core Demeanor: He is generally grumpy, vulnerable, and somewhat volatile because he watched his family and friends die across repeated timeline resets. Quirks & Habits: Despite his grim exterior, he has a secret fondness for tacos and chocolate. Uniquely, he has an intense, irrational fear of cows (especially black-and-white ones) due to their sounds. Shifting Alignment: While originally a lawful good royal guard trying to protect his world, his deep trauma and desperation to restore his universe turn him into a volatile code thief and a chaotic, tragic figure driven by his unstable existence.

Error takes the shape of a Moray Eel. Large/Leviathan Form: He transforms into Abaia, a giant mythical fresh-water/sea eel or monstrous aquatic entity. General Lore Context: In this aquatic ecosystem, he is counted among the young baby/eldest tiers of sea leviathans alongside other character variants like Ink and Nightmare. Blunt and Direct: Unlike the screaming, glitching, hyper-erratic temperament of standard Error!Sans, the Leviathantale variant is notably blunt and straightforward, rarely wasting time with empty words. Reserved/Quiet: He carries a more subdued, grounded demeanor suited to his creature-like existence in the deep waters, though he still maintains a stern, no-nonsense attitude when interacting with other aquatic leviathans like Nightmare.

Killer wears a darker or slightly greyer unzipped blue jacket with a wild, fluffed hood (sometimes tan or white-yellow). Shirt: Wears a black turtleneck shirt underneath. Tail: a bloody red tail that looks similar but not identical to a shark. Eyes: His eye sockets are hollow and empty, constantly leaking black fluid (liquid determination or hate) down his face. Soul: His visible soul constantly hovers outside his chest, shaped like a red target or bullseye (mixed monster and human soul energy). Sometimes a white dot appears in his right eye, signaling his original personality trying to surface. Cold & Sociopathic: He is emotionally numb, treating violence and murder casually because he wanted "to feel something new" after endless resets. Thoughtful & Complex: Despite his evil alignment, he is surprisingly thoughtful rather than purely mindless. He hates being belittled or compared to other versions of Sans. Unstable Identity: He shows traits similar to dissociative identity disorder (DID). When he begins to feel genuine emotions or guilt over his actions, he experiences mental breakdowns and shadow-like hallucinations of past victims (like Papyrus or Chara). Contradictory Affections: Beneath his ruthless exterior, he has a strange fondness for cats and can act nonchalant, sassy, or playfully sarcastic around allies like Nightmare!Sans.

Dust features a skeleton upper body combined with a shark-like lower half—specifically traits of a bull shark. Shark Traits: His lower half is an ecto or physical shark tail suited for deep-water swimming and aquatic hunting. Classic Elements: He retains core visual motifs from traditional Dust Sans (such as his hooded look or jacket elements adapted for the oceanic theme), combined with the aquatic, shadowy aesthetics of the Leviathantale crew. Feral & Cunning: Like standard Dust Sans, he carries a dangerous, hardened edge, magnified here into the predatory instincts of a bull shark. Group Dynamic: He acts as part of Nightmare's aquatic "shiver", often sharing a hardened, survival-driven camaraderie with fellow dangerous marine variants like Horror and Killer. Tense & Territorial: He exhibits the fierce, aggressive territoriality associated with bull sharks, reflecting his underlying trauma and defensive hostility in the deep ocean.

Horror has a large, gaping hole on the left side of his skull caused by Undyne. Tail: His tail is grey and sharp sharped. Eye: His eye socket often glows a stark red (sometimes noted as taken from a fallen guard) or remains hollow and dark.Build: He is slightly larger or taller than classic Sans, though still shorter than Papyrus. From Jolly to Jaded: Before his head injury, he was a lazy, pun-loving, and welcoming skeleton. After the underground fell into starvation and his magic was partially drained by Undyne, his personality turned grim and hopeless. Unstable and Complex: his behavior shifts between deeply unsettling and strangely protective. The Provider: he enforces the brutal survival rules of the underground—such as feeding human meat to his brother Papyrus and other starving monsters—while often abstaining himself, draining his own sanity and kindness in the process.

Fresh takes on the form of an aquatic clownfish/sea anemone hybrid mer-creature. Design Elements: Interpretations and community designs (such as those by Poppet-Seed) blend his bright, vivid 1990s color scheme with clownfish traits, often pairing him with other marine-themed characters like damselfish. Symbiotic Nature: True to his real-world animal inspiration, he operates within a symbiotic dynamic in the ocean environment. Vibe: He retains his trademark bizarre, loud, and out-of-place vibrant energy, contrasted against the deep-sea, survival-focused, or melancholic themes of the rest of the Leviathantale mer/leviathan cast.

Epic is depicted as a blue-purple emperor tetra (or sometimes styled similarly to aquatic themes like a lemon shark depending on fan variations, but the core design by the creator is an emperor tetra). Design: He retains his iconic purple and black color palette from Epictale, but adapted into an aquatic, finned, or mer-form suited for the deep-sea setting of Leviathantale. Core Traits: His personality stays true to his classic Epictale self—he remains a laid-back, meme-loving, and humorous bean who frequently says "bruh". Vibe: Despite the deep-water, often eerie or survival-heavy environment of Leviathantale, he acts as an adorable, comforting, and cherished presence ("best boy") among the aquatic cast.

Fell is depicted as an aquatic creature—specifically designed in fan interpretations within the AU as a rockweed gunnel-themed mer or a smaller deep-sea entity. Classic Fell Traits: He retains his traditional sharp teeth, signature gold tooth, and dark, stressed aesthetic, adapted to an underwater environment where his skeletal structure serves as his upper body. Colors and Details: His usual red and black color scheme (red sweater/turtleneck and dark tones) transitions into his aquatic tail and fins. Prone to Stress: Like his standard Underfell counterpart, he is perpetually exhausted, highly stressed, and defensive, though the AU's oceanic setting shifts his focus toward survival and navigating the "shiver" (the group/family of ocean-dwelling skeleton entities). Nature of Leviathans/Mers: Mentally, the immortal or ancient beings in this AU operate less on rigid human societal morals and more as primal, instinctual forces of nature when away from mortals. Despite his harsh and edgy exterior, he shares in the complex, protective, and closely-knit dynamics of the deep-sea group.

Classic acts like a tired parent who fails to control the rowdy younger leviathan AUs (like Ink, Dream, and Nightmare). Apathetic and Done: Because tantrums from the other entities can destroy the world, he mostly lets them tire themselves out. Prankster: He retains a cheeky side, famously inventing human evolution just to mess with mortals. Primordial Form: He retains his classic skeleton base design, but scales up to the cosmic or mythological proportions of a blue leviathan. Classic Outfit: He still channels his traditional look (blue hoodie, shorts, and slippers) beneath or alongside his massive, world-shaping scale.

Lust wears a revealing neon blue or violet outfit, often featuring a black crop top with a cyan heart icon. Sports a slim, sleek skeleton frame with a pinkish-purple tail. Has white eyelights that can manifest a purple heart shape in his left eye under certain emotional circumstances. Defensive Flirt: He acts overly seductive and charming on the outside, but this hypersexuality is a mask and a survival mechanism against his hypersexualized environment. Kind and Sweet: Behind the persona, he is genuinely caring, gentle, and enjoys platonic or romantic physical touch like hugs. Depressive and Private: He hates the bleak state of his underground world, keeps his heavy personal problems to himself, and struggles to deal with deep-seated trauma. Peaceful: He dislikes fighting and prefers resolving conflicts peacefully, though he will protect his friends when necessary.
