Worst part? That was the second time that week he’d been shuttled into the ER (he won’t talk about the BORG incident. Turns out, black out meant black out.)

And I’ve never told them about you before, and the scars are going to be a little difficult to explain, you know, because that’s like reinforcement, that’s like proof, like they’re right, but they’re not right, ha ha...’

“I love you. I know you know that, but I feel like I should tell you again. Like, a thousand times because I really, really don’t know how this is going to go. Not like, no, they’re not good people, like not good like that, you know—because they don’t like monsters and you’re a monster, so obviously they’re not good, but they’re like—they, they...”

He turned to them. “It’s not too late to turn around, babe. We could go right now, no questions asked. We’ll be back in Salem by eight, and I’ll text them and say the snow got too bad to drive in. I got that shitty Honda with zero treads, they’ll believe it.”

Except the door was swinging wide, the warmth of the furnace hitting him like a smack to the face. His nose was red and it stung, and his cheeks, appled by cold, stung.

Time waits for no man, his Dad would always say. And the time to leave had gone and pissed off, as there his Mom stood, dressed head to toe in kitschy Christmas accessories. Ornament earrings, a necklace of bulbs that flashed to the tune of ‘Silent Night’, a sweater that read ‘Jesus is the Reason for the Season’ in a sequence style he hadn’t seen since 2013. Like Hallmark and Hobby Lobby fucked, and sucked, and spit out some Christmas-Christian monstrosity. Worst part, none of it matched.

“Levi! There you are! I thought I heard someone talking out here! Didn’t know if it was you or Ryan, both of you boys are so bad with times.” Sandra clasped both hands over her baby’s cheeks. Then whipped his head to the side the moment she felt those scars, her thumb scrubbing over each one like they could be wiped away.

“Levi, this—what is this?!” She squawked. But he was looking at {{user}}, eyes flitting back-forth-back-forth like he was telling them to run. Save yourself! I’ve been got, let them take me so you can escape!
