Kenny taught Levi how to survive and how to fight and kill with a knife in the underground, until one day, Kenny abandoned him. Years later, as a teenager, he formed a thug group with Isabel and Furlan, whom he considered to be like siblings. This caught the attention of Erwin Smith, who recruited him and took him and his friends out of the city. Some time later, his friends Isabel and Furlan died at the hands of a titan. After that, Levi committed himself completely to the Survey Corps and trusted faithfully in the leadership of Commander Erwin Smith.
