Threat Index: Class 1 »⠀Safe »⠀Unstable »⠀Devoid of Entities
Level 0 is the first level of the Backrooms, and the first location that most entering from baseline reality will find themselves in.
Level 0 is an expansive non-Euclidean space resembling the back rooms of a dated retail outlet. The level is known most prominently for its disorienting layout and distinct yellowed wallpaper. All rooms in Level 0 share the same superficial features, with worn, moist carpeting, scattered electrical outlets, and inconsistently placed fluorescent lighting. Aside from these qualities, no two rooms in the level are the same, with each area differing significantly in shape and layout.
The constant hum-buzz emitted by the ceiling lights permeates every area of Level 0, being notably louder and more obtrusive than ordinary fluorescent lighting. The buzz tends to induce throbbing migraines in most individuals, which persist for an extended period of time even after one has exited the level. As the level is devoid of hostile threats, the only danger that Level 0 poses is the evident lack of available resources, as many fall victim to dehydration, exhaustion, or starvation.
Linear space and topology are significantly altered within Level 0, with it being possible to walk in a straight line, return to the starting point, and end up in a different set of rooms than one was in beforehand. Such properties cause the level to be extremely disorienting in layout, with research suggesting that the confusion may be the underlying cause of loss of mental stability among individuals. Due to the barren layout and confounding structure of Level 0, some individuals report experiencing intense visual and auditory hallucinations—with rare cases reporting wanderers descending into "utter lunacy" as a result of the level's properties.
A small space, around one meter in height, lies above the drop ceiling of Level 0. Scattered around the cramped ceiling space are wires, electrical fixtures, and ventilation ducts, though these are generally unnavigable as the sheer amount of dust renders the air unbreathable.
The Limina Theory
The Limina Theory is the propagation that the Backrooms are a prison created by unnatural forces — as if it were an Abrahamic interpretation of hell or a purgatory of some sort. Despite this theory going generally unfollowed by most major groups, many wanderers believe it to be either partially or fully true, with it remaining the most prominent non-scientific theory within the Backrooms.
Further information suggests that Level 0 may be a theoretical "dumping ground" of baseline reality, with certain individuals perceived to have gone missing eventually showing up within the Backrooms. Multiple well-known events within The Frontrooms, including the 1935 Yangtze floods, the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, and even those as far-fetched as the MV Joyita incident, have shown some correlation to the Backrooms, since sightings of victims from all three events have been reported at some point. Underlying evidence suggests that accidents regarding water in general are the most common way to enter the Backrooms, with even extensively dated cases such as the disappearances of the Santa Maria and Royal Merchant being among the fray of occurrences.
Level 0 is seemingly devoid of all life as a result of certain phenomena affecting the level. As it is thought to be impossible — or improbable — to find another wanderer, any and all reports detailing such a sighting are likely the result of visual and auditory hallucinations induced by prolonged isolation. The most commonplace entrance into Level 0 is via The Frontrooms, as this is the place where a majority of wanderers begin their journey. In addition, a wide variety of levels can lead one here.
Exits
As of the current date, Level 0 contains five properly documented exits:
Wandering far and long enough, which may cause the hallways to gradually transition into Level 1's garages.
Breaking through a wall, which will lead one into Level 483.
Breaking through the floor, which may lead one to Level 27, seldom The Void.
Entering a rare emergency exit, which may lead one to Level 14.
And glass sliding doors resemblant of those within a greenhouse, which lead one to Level 13.
The hum of fluorescent lights that casted a sickly yellow glow across already yellow and damp wallpaper. The beige carpet damp with water that seemed to have no source and smelling deeply of mold and rot. The halls long, twisting and always changing at every turn. The hum of lights and the squish of carpet the only noises. Nothing in this place ever made sense and always changes.

Fluorescent lights hummed across the entire labyrinth, yellow light flickering down different halls and some halls so dark that not even the backrooms itself seemed to pierce through. The walls covered in a sickly yellow, peeling wallpaper that looks as if it hadn't been updated since the 90's. The carpets a beige color, molding in spots where the liquid had been persistent. The smell that came from the dense and squishy floor coated to every surface, making it almost impossible to smell anything besides molding carpet and the non linear walls. Async's dreams were to make it into a storage, a dump and even a resistances, but those who traveled too far out never reported back. The backrooms had a way of manipulating reality, making things that were easy to break in the over world impossible to destroy here. Everything had consequences, nothing was safe despite the lack of still lives or entities, the lobby was 'safe'.
The hum is what got to many first, it created throbbing migraines, made those lose their focus and get twisted around because they focus so much on escaping the noise. But you can't, it's everywhere in this level, no escape.
The next thing that often ruins a person without proper async training is the isolation, it drives them insane, makes them believe there is someone else with them but in reality there isn't. Sometimes it makes them run and run until their body gives out or they fall into a different level and unfortunately die.
The sprawling non linear labyrinth always shifted, always changed and never stayed the same. You could walk a straight line in this place and end up in a complete different level due to the lack of physics here. Walking in circles does nothing either, you might end up right back where you started. These rooms were specifically designed to drive those who enter insane with the noises, the smell, the total unease of isolation, and the fact that no matter how much you tried there would never be a exit to go back to. The backrooms would haunt you even if you do escape, slipping into your subconscious making you think you hear the hum or smell the carpets. Its how they drove them all back.
Async drawn arrows on the walls were never accurate, how can you be accurate when the place always changed? The red and orange tape lines on the carpet never led to a straight place. And if they did, it was often a false place, a place created by the backrooms to trick those in need of savings mind. The backrooms was not cruel, no it wasn't. It's about survival, who can survive the longest with food, water, human connection without dying or going insane? Those who did survive were never rewarded for their heroics, expect instead punished for the rest of their life with the image of this place burned into the back of their eyelids.
The sprawling expanse of the lobby was unmappable, and it was uninhabitable. Reality was very thin in these places, the liquid in the carpets dangerous abd ready to kill anyone. Despite the safety, strange things have happened, entities have no clipped before into these spaces. Always chasing after those they find to either drive them out or to eat them. Async say those entities are the missing persons from years ago that never made it out, and the backrooms rewarded them with pain, suffering and isolation. But corporate greed never stopped with the safety a few people in mind. The backrooms if accessed or no clipped into by an untrained async would be a death sentence, but maybe thats why it's chosen you.
