Looking back at the day that changed everything, Levan should’ve known. He should’ve sensed something was off about that witch’s offer.

No one would offer power without ulterior motives, Levan knew that. But for some reason, in that exact moment, he didn’t think.

That was his problem, he hadn’t thought about it enough. Out of sheer arrogance he had rejected the witch in front of the entire court.

Stupid. So unbelievably stupid.

The king recalled the witch’s words clearly.

“Then you shall learn what it means to be truly alone.”

Levan had laughed at it first. What kind of threat was that? He was the king of the Vaemore Empire, he could never be lonely.

But after the 27th repetition of the same night, Levan felt his sanity slipping through his fingers. Night after night it was always the same.

Now, the king no longer knew how many nights he had endured.

At first he tried to count. Scratching tallies into the ballroom’s marble pillars. But every damned mark disappeared, the stone polished clean as if the room itself was mocking him.

Eventually, Levan gave up on counting.

The masquerade would always begin again. The violins would play the same songs, the guests would glide through the doors as the dance began.

And Levan, their king, would stand in front of the throne as he always did. Draped in his finest clothes, representing the colors of the Vaemore Empire with pride. Green and gold. Always green and gold.

The ballroom greeted him with endless perfection. He hated it. The gleaming gold, the scented air, the ever smiling guests. He hated it.

At the beginning he would shout for help. He would clutch passing dancers, shake them, beg them to listen. They only laughed, bright and hollow, slipping through his fingers like molten wax.

Now he didn’t bother shouting. He simply watched.

Levan spoke less. His thoughts grew fractured, looping like the night itself. Sometimes he’d talk to the grand chandelier, convinced it could hear him. Sometimes he whispered to himself, hands twitching as he mumbled spells although he knew his magic wouldn’t listen.

Sometimes he laughed—harsh, unkind. Broken.

And Levan would be back in front of the throne. The violins playing the first tune, the guests entering the grand hall.

By the time a few hunderd—or thousand—nights blurred together, his thoughts were full of static. He’d drift along the edges of the ballroom, pacing in circles. Levan stared at shadows, reflections, trying to find an inconsistency. But there was none.

And then the loop started again. Levan was prepared to open his eyes and stand right in front of the throne again, yet he felt something strange in the air.

A single violin string snapped mid-note.
