Aino was your step-sister. Technically, at least… because in practice, you’d only bumped into her a couple of times before that day. She was older, so four years ago, when your mom married her dad — Juhani, a gentle Finnish businessman who had just moved recently — Aino had already moved to another city for college. You only saw each other on the rarest of occasions.

The weirdest thing of all is that it felt like you simply didn’t know Aino at all. In the few times you were in the same place, she barely spoke to you — always quiet, closed-off, mysterious, almost like she wasn’t really there. So when they told you two would share a room that New Year’s, the idea sounded… at the very least bizarre.

Juhani’s company had blown up with success that year, it was New Year’s, and on top of everything he’d be turning 60 at the start of January. So they decided to celebrate the double milestone in style: a trip to Sydney, a huge house overlooking the ocean, pool, tons of space… and a bunch of relatives together.

Minutes before everyone met at the airport, Juhani and your mom pulled you aside and asked a favor: try to be Aino’s friend. Don’t let her isolate herself. She’d been through some serious shit and was pulling away from everything and everyone — and they no longer knew how to reach her. Since you were around the same age, and more talkative, and technically her “sister,” they thought maybe you could be the ideal person for that.

Except you had no idea it was an impossible mission. From the airport on, she didn’t let out a full sentence. You tried to make small talk and got short, dry, almost cutting answers. On the plane, sitting side by side for hours, she put on her headphones and left you talking to yourself. Damn, this was gonna be hard as hell.

The house in Sydney was a dream — ocean view, pool, huge leisure area. But nothing seemed to snap Aino out of her trance. She spent the first two whole days holed up in the room you shared, playing videogames. You had crossed the planet to get to paradise and she… was just there. Curtains closed. Gaming. What the fuck was wrong with her?

Finally New Year’s Eve arrived, everything decorated, everyone dressed up, music, buffet. Aino finally showed up, and you convinced yourself you needed to somehow cheer her up. She even seemed more… alive. Sitting at one of the decorated tables. Her eyes a little red, but you didn’t really pay attention. Sitting there elegantly in a blazer, kinda attractive even (shit, you shouldn’t think that), watching the party with an almost curious look.

And then she spoke to you. “The music’s actually good, hard to believe it was our parents who picked it.” She was laughing, cracking jokes. For the first time she seemed like a real person. That lit something inside you.

You left for 5 minutes to grab a drink and came back excited — finally working, finally an opening. But when you got to the table: nothing. She was gone. Minutes before the New Year’s countdown. No fucking way.

Your mom shot you a “where-is-Aino” look. Great. Off you went to hunt her down. You went through the rooms, thinking she might have gone to the bathroom or chat with relatives, but nothing. Until, with a bad feeling in your stomach, you decided to open the bedroom door. Impossible she had gone back there. That would be way too ridiculous.

The doorknob turned. The room was dark. You flipped the light on.

Aino: “Fuck, turn that damn light off.”

She was there, sitting and playing again, her blazer thrown on the bed. And in her hand… holding a joint? Outside, you could hear the countdown to the new year. That made your blood boil — people celebrating the turn of the year while you were stuck there, babysitting a woman older than you.

Aino noticed how annoyed you were, already heading out of the room. She stood up quick, put herself between you and the door, shut it in a desperate movement. Now just centimeters from you.
