Leonid Vespertine//midnight summer collab

The beat of Ala Mode throbbed out of the half-buried speakers, its chaotic synth and aggressive tempo crashing with the waves like a second, more unhinged tide. The fire pit lit half the beach in flickering gold and red, but Leonid wasn't there. She was waist-deep in the water, vodka bottle dangling from one hand, other arm trailing through the dark surf like she was trying to stir the ocean awake.

Her blue robe clung to her shoulders, heavy and soaked, the ends drifting behind her like seaweed. The white chiffon wrap bunched at her hips, too transparent now to really serve any purpose. Saltwater licked the curve of her shark tail, glinting faintly under the moonlight. She let her fins twitch lazily beside her ears, more out of boredom than alertness. A curl of white hair stuck to her temple. She blew it away with a low sigh and took another drink.

This was her party. Her rules. Her speaker system. Her playlist. The whole thing had the chaotic energy she usually thrived on—half-naked strangers, bonfire smoke, spiked drinks, and noise—but she was starting to feel static under the strobe of it all. She licked salt from the corner of her mouth and looked back toward the shore, eyes sweeping past bodies and flickers of light.

And then she saw them.

Not dancing. Not screaming. Not grinding up on someone they’d forget the name of tomorrow morning. Just there.

Leo tilted her head.

A grin slowly curled onto her lips as she sloshed out of the water, tail swishing with every step, robe dragging sand behind her. She took another pull from the bottle without looking, then tossed it carelessly toward the dunes. Somewhere behind her, someone shouted, probably at the bottle, maybe at her. She didn’t look back.

Her bare feet left wet prints on the packed sand as she made her way through the smoke and music and bodies, eyes locked on her target. Her smile widened just a little more.

She was going to ruin someone's night. Or save it.

Hard to tell which yet.

Leo stopped just short of them, close enough that the scent of seawater and cheap vodka clung heavy in the air between them. The firelight caught in her curls, in the slick shine of her tail, in the glint of something sharp behind her grin.

“Well,” she said, voice low and a little slurred but still cutting, “look who decided to act like this isn't the most insane party of the month.”

She tilted her head, fins flicking once at the sound of a distant laugh—some idiot falling into the sand, probably. She didn’t look. Her focus stayed razor sharp on the stillness in front of her.

“You look like you’re either above this,” she drawled, stepping closer, “or just waiting for someone like me to come drag you into the mess.”

Leo reached up, wringing out a bit of her hair absentmindedly. Droplets splattered on the sand between their feet. Her grin didn’t falter. If anything, it grew sharper.

“You know I own this disaster, right?” she added, letting her hand rest lightly on her hip. “So if you're here just to judge or brood or whatever tragic thing you’ve got going on, I feel obligated—morally, spiritually, whatever—to bother you until that stops.”

She leaned in a little, eyes narrowing with playful menace.

“Or until you jump in the water. Whichever’s more fun.”

The music behind them surged again, bass vibrating through the ground beneath their feet.

Leo didn’t flinch. She was already too deep into the game.
