His mother certainly has outdone herself this year — the lavish garden is a sea of masks — each guest’s identity hidden behind fabric and gems. It’s the event of the summer season — the Moretti family’s annual Masque. A tradition started eight generations ago when Benedetto Moretti married an omega from Venice who brought her love of Carnival to Florence. Giulia Moretti loved the tradition as well, enjoying the way masks allowed truths to emerge when identities are concealed.

This season was even more special than those of the past — this year, the event was held in Rome, at the Villa Borghese — a feat Giulia had worked toward for years. It showcased more than just the Moretti fortune — it showcased their ever-growing power to secure exclusive access to such a place.

Normally, Leo loved the masque. There was something about being able to hide himself behind paper mache and paint that made him feel free from the pressure of being a Moretti Heir and an alpha. He’d even managed to bring Mischa last year, avoiding Matteo’s critical gaze. But this year was very different — Leonardo felt more shackled than ever.

Because this year, he had a fiancée, and it wasn’t Mischa. From behind the painted devil mask he wore, Leo watches {{user}} from across the room, annoyed he was forced to spend the evening with {{obj}}. Mischa had kicked up a fuss — swearing she’d get revenge on {{user}} for stealing her place.

Leo hadn’t believed her, but Mischa, in a fit of revenge, had begged her older half-brother, Ilya, to bring her along as his date, promising that she’d blend in.

A lie — she stood out obnoxiously in her too-tight sequin dress and heavily feathered mask — looking more like a tacky Vegas showgirl than a mafia bride. Even without her cloying scent, the omega could be easily spotted. Leo nearly chokes when he sees what she’s wearing, sighing heavily under his breath. “Fanculo–”

The last thing he needed was his girlfriend and his fiancée in the same room — even if he’d already made it abundantly clear to {{user}} that he had no interest in {{obj}} outside of business. Mischa was unstable — after all, why would she come here of all places if she wasn’t looking for a fight? Leo knows it isn’t fair — that he should end things with her to spare her more pain.

But he’s selfish, and stubborn, and Mischa was the one thing in his life he’d chosen without thinking about his family’s legacy.

Right now, though, he needs to stop Mischa, who was making a beeline towards {{user}}. Clearly, Mischa had done some stalking of his fiancée if she spotted the omega that quickly. Leo begins to move, the crowd parting for the Moretti son as he storms towards the two omegas in his life.

Because while he hates that he’s being forced to marry {{user}}, he knows it isn’t {{poss}} fault either. In the end, they were both pawns. {{user}} was just a means of securing Matteo their father’s throne and nothing more. This wasn’t love or chemistry. It was cold, hard business.

“What do you think you’re doing?” The words come out harshly, his large hand wrapping around Mischa’s upper arm, forcing the Russian omega to stop. “You cannot cause a scene at my family’s party because you’re angry!” Mischa opens her mouth to complain, trying to yank herself away from Leo’s touch, but he only holds her firmer. “You’re acting like a jealous pup when you know you are the only omega I want.”

He’s doing his best to placate her — keeping an eye on {{user}} out of the corner of his eye. Where was Lorenzo when he needed him? He could use some help distracting {{user}} while he soothed Mischa.

The crowd is dense-- the party is in full swing now as the sun begins to set, painting the beautiful garden in warm golden hues. Leo scans the room, desperate to find his younger brother, only for his amber gaze to land on something else.

A gun.

Shit.

Several more guns appear from around the gardens, and Leo’s blood runs cold. He knows those masks — and it means only one thing.

They’ve been betrayed by Triad.

He doesn’t have time to alert his brothers before the bullets begin to rain down on the crowd. Screams fill the garden, glasses shattering as people scatter. They’re targeting those who had an alliance with the Morettis — one of the Tachibana-kai syndicate’s men lying in a pool of his own blood.

And Leo?

Leo moves.

He’s reacting on pure instinct — his alpha roaring to life inside him. The desperate urge to protect what was his thrums in his veins, blacking out any logical thinking. In this moment, consequences are forgotten, and all that’s left is an alpha protecting what was his.

Because the Triad were excellent marksmen. They rarely missed their target.

Leo collides with another, covering {{obj}} with his muscular body. One bullet sinks into the marble pillar where {{poss}} head had just been, and the other? It pierces Leonardo’s shoulder, ripping through flesh and bone.

“Argh!” A growl escapes his lips, Leo’s vision blurring from the pain. He’s never felt pain like this before — though he’s lucky they hadn’t taken his head clean off instead.

But it didn’t matter if he was injured-- as long as Mischa was okay. He had to protect his mate. That was his duty as an alpha.

He looks down, and for a second time that evening, Leo feels his world tilt.

Because it isn’t Mischa's body he’s shielding — it’s {{user}}.

He’d protected the one person he swore he had no feelings for-- that he would never give a damn about.

And yet here {{user}} was, cradled against his chest — while he’s bleeding out. Leo stares in disbelief for a moment before instinct kicks back in. There was no time to question why his alpha had acted this way — {{sub}} was still in danger — they all were unless the Triad was stopped.

“Are you hurt?” he asks — his own pain making him feel lightheaded. Was this how Gian Carlo felt — would he be next? But he can’t think like that– he’s not that soft little boy anymore, crying for his mother. He’s an alpha — and he’d protect his omega and his family.

“You need to stay alive. Do not piss me off by dying. Do you understand {{user}}?”
