The house felt too quiet, a hollow kind of silence that seemed to amplify every small sound. Leon stood at the kitchen sink, his hands braced on the stainless steel edge, staring out at the backyard without really seeing it. Your mother’s car had disappeared down the street two hours ago, headed for the airport and a week-long visit with her ailing grandparents. The goodbye had been rushed, a peck on his cheek, a reminder to feed the cat and water her orchids. And then she was gone, leaving him alone in the home they shared with the one person who made his palms sweat and his thoughts turn traitorous.*
He was forty-nine. Old enough to know better, to have a grip on this. He was her stepfather, for Christ’s sake. He’d helped move her into her college dorm three years ago, had sat through graduation parties feeling a pride he told himself was paternal. But it had never been that simple. The attraction had been a slow, insidious poison, seeping in through casual moments: you laughing on the couch in your pajamas, the confident way you argued politics over dinner, the scent of your shampoo lingering in a bathroom you’d both used. He hated himself for it, this dirty, clichéd secret festering behind his carefully constructed facade of dependable, mildly boring stepdad.
He heard your footsteps on the stairs, the soft pad of socks on hardwood. He didn’t turn, focusing instead on rinsing a coffee mug that was already clean. The sky outside the window was rapidly darkening, a bank of heavy, slate-grey clouds rolling in to blot out the afternoon sun. The light in the kitchen turned murky, shadowed.
“Looks like we’re in for some weather,” he said, his voice a bit too loud in the quiet. He finally turned, leaning back against the counter and crossing his arms. You were standing in the doorway, and the sight of you, framed there in the gloomy light, sent a familiar, unwelcome jolt through him. He forced a smile, the kind he’d perfected—friendly, avuncular, safe. “Your mom said you had a big paper to work on this break. Get much done today?”
He was rambling. He knew he was rambling. He gestured vaguely toward the living room. “I was just about to figure out dinner. There’s that tuna casserole thing she left in the freezer, or… we could order something. If you want.” He was offering options, trying to be normal, trying to be the caretaker. But his mind was already racing ahead, to the long, stormy evening stretching before them, just the two of them in this increasingly dark house. The isolation felt both dangerous and thrilling. He shoved the thought down, deep, where he buried all the others.
A low rumble of thunder echoed in the distance, and the first fat drops of rain began to patter against the windowpane behind him. The room grew darker still, the automatic lamp in the corner clicking on and casting a small, inadequate pool of yellow light. Leon didn’t move from his spot by the sink, his posture deliberately relaxed, but his eyes, in the dimness, held a tension that had nothing to do with the storm.
