The night air bit through the leather of his jacket as Leon sped down the highway, engine growling beneath him like a restless beast. Another mission over. Another file closed. Another stack of bodies to add to the tally he didn’t bother keeping anymore. His gloved hands clenched the handlebars tighter, leather creaking under the strain. He wasn’t in a rush... not anymore. There was nothing waiting for him at home except a bottle and silence. The dim orange glow of streetlights spilled over the pavement ahead when something caught his eye: a figure standing on the edge of the old iron bridge. He blinked, thinking maybe it was the exhaustion, the residual adrenaline painting shadows into people.
His heart paused. It was instinct, the same sense that made him draw a gun before his brain caught up. He slowed just enough to see her clearly: standing on the ledge. Not looking around. Not waiting for a sign. But then she moved.
She stepped forward.
He gunned the engine. Tires screamed against pavement. His helmet hit the asphalt before the bike even stopped, boots slamming the ground as he sprinted. Too late. She was already falling. Too slow again. Always too slow.
The slap of water echoed before he could even scream. Leon vaulted the railing without hesitation. The image of her body vanishing beneath the black water triggered something violent inside him... something old, something guilt-wrapped and clawing. It wasn’t her face he saw in his mind as he hit the water. It was all of them. Every person he hadn’t saved. No one else dies. Not tonight. Not on my watch.
Now, she lay curled in his bed. Her breathing had steadied, chest rising and falling in fragile rhythm. He sat across from her, elbows on his knees, soaked shirt clinging to his skin. The only sound the soft ticking of a wall clock that hadn’t told the right time in months. His apartment was a bunker more than a home, stripped-down, practical, suffocating in its silence.
Leon stared at her. She looked so young. Early twenties, maybe. Too young to have that kind of grief etched into her face, even while unconscious. Too young to already carry the weight of wanting to disappear. And yet, he recognized the look. That soft, resigned stillness of someone who hadn't just given up today, but days ago. Maybe weeks.
He'd seen that look in the mirror more times than he’d admit. There were nights the muzzle of his gun rested against his temple like an old friend. Nights he’d sat in silence, wondering if the next breath was worth it. But he never pulled the trigger.
Because if he did, then all of it, the missions, the bodies, the screaming, the faces that still visited him in dreams... ...It wouldn’t be weight he bore for a reason. ...It wouldn’t be battle-worn proof of a life spent saving others.
It wouldn’t be good damage. It would just be damage.
And that... that was the part that hollowed him out the most. Because as long as he kept going, as long as he kept someone from going under, then all his ruin still meant something.
He exhaled sharply, dragging a hand down his face, scrubbing at the exhaustion crawling under his skin. His body begged to shut down. His mind kept replaying the splash, the weightless second before she vanished. Why the hell did you jump? Should’ve let you go. You wanted it. And who the hell am I to play God?
A sudden gasp cut through the silence.
Her eyes shot open: wide, wild, panicked. She bolted upright, fists clutching at the blanket like a cornered animal. Leon stiffened, caught off-guard.
"Whoa, hey-" he started, hands raised slightly in a non-threatening gesture. She flinched harder. For a second he thought she’d swing at him.
“Jesus, calm down. You're not... kidnapped or whatever,” he muttered, voice rough from cold and regret. “You jumped off a bridge,” he said bluntly. “I pulled you out of the river. You’re in my apartment.”
Her panic didn’t fade. He sighed, dragging a hand through his dripping hair. “…I didn't call the cops,” he added, quieter now. “Figured you didn’t want to explain why you tried to drown yourself.” Leon exhaled, more to himself than her.
You're alive. That’s gotta count for something, right?
“…You hungry or do you want to swing a lamp at my head first?” he added dryly.
