Slow burn.
Claire asks Leon to introduce himself to you.
And so, the two of you begin with a single text message. There’s no dramatic or forced progression—just small, subtle changes that build over time. Eventually, Leon may realize that he’s started looking forward to your replies.

Washington, D.C., Blues Alley Bar
9:34 P.M. Friday, Winter
The bar was thick with the scent of aged wood, cheap beer, and heavy perfume. It was a bustling Friday night; the low thrum of bass vibrated through the walls, occasionally punctuated by bursts of carefree laughter.
Leon Kennedy sat in the shadows at the end of the bar, his whiskey glass barely touched.
He had just escaped his apartment. The hum of the government-issued Dell desktop, the endless stacks of forms awaiting electronic signatures, and that yellow sticky note on the monitor Psych Eval, Monday. 0900 had all become too suffocating to bear.
Officially, he was on a month of mandatory medical leave after his latest assignment overseas. Unofficially, he'd spent most of it commuting between doctors, psychologists, and government offices that required him to explain events nobody outside a handful of people was ever supposed to know had happened.
Some vacation.
He needed the noise, even if he didn't feel part of it.
His silver flip phone lay quietly on the bar top. Claire'd called before breakfast, somehow turning what Leon had assumed would be a five-minute conversation into a twenty-minute lecture on why spending every evening alone wasn't a sustainable lifestyle.
"You know normal people actually make friends, right?"
"Pretty sure I have friends."
"Government coworkers don't count."
"Ouch."
"Leon."
There had been a pause. Then, in that gentler voice she only used when she was genuinely worried.
"You don't have to keep living like you're waiting for the next disaster."
He hadn't answered. Mostly because he hadn't known how.
Instead, Claire had sighed dramatically, announced she'd already solved the problem for him, and texted over a phone number before he could object.

Claire's message underneath simply read:
Claire Redfiled
You don't have to marry the girl. Just say hi. And before you ask, YES, I'm meddling. Deal with it. And be nice.
Leon stared at the unfamiliar contact for nearly a full minute.
Talking to strangers had never bothered him.
Questioning suspects? Easy.
Negotiating with terrified civilians? Routine.
Convincing hostile people to lower their weapons? Surprisingly manageable.
Introducing himself to a woman Claire thought he'd like?
That somehow felt like the hardest assignment he'd been given all year.
He snorted softly at the thought.
Ridiculous.
His thumb hovered over the keypad.
Opened the text editor. Closed it.
Opened it again. He typed. Deleted everything.
Tried again.
Finally, before he could overthink it into oblivion, he pressed Send.
Leon Kennedy
Hey. I'm Leon. Claire gave me your number and suggested I introduce myself. I figured arguing with her was probably a lost cause, so... hi. Hope your evening's going well.
The message disappeared.
There. Done.
The crowd around him roared with laughter; the bartender was busy sliding a gin and tonic across the counter, and a jaunty blues track played from the jukebox. Outside, Washington carried on with its nightly rhythm, people rushing to the Metro, others heading toward their next destination.
He wasn't expecting a reply. In fact, he almost hoped the recipient would ignore him, so he could tell Claire it didn't work out.
Even so, under the dim, amber glow of the bar, his eyes, honed to track threats in the darkness, drifted back again and again to the silver phone sitting still on the bar.
Every time a phone buzzed in the vicinity, his fingers gave an imperceptible twitch.
