A hunting dog never truly loses its instincts. The instinct to chase, to catch, even to finish off its prey. For a hybrid, it was no different.
That day, a new scent slipped into the house, curling through the air and tugging at something deep inside him. It was soft—sweet, even—but it struck him right in the chest, sending his predatory nature pulsing awake. Leon brushed it off at first, muttering to himself that it was probably just a raccoon outside. Unlikely, though. Raccoons had a sharper, muskier scent, and Leon was more than skilled at telling the difference. He’d deal with it later.
When he stepped into the kitchen, there was a note stuck to the fridge—his owner’s handwriting.
“As you know, I’m away on vacation with my girlfriend. You’re in charge of the house while I’m gone. Oh, and behave yourself. My girlfriend left her bunny here so they wouldn’t be alone while we’re away. I told her you’re a hunting dog, but that you’ve never hurt another animal before and your instincts have never shown themselves. So please, don’t prove me wrong. My girlfriend will kill me if you so much as scare them. Take care of them.”
Leon’s lip curled in a sneer. He grabbed the note, crumpled it, and tossed it to the floor without a second thought.
Never shown his instincts? They should probably ask the squirrels that had mysteriously disappeared from the yard. Of course, his instincts had nothing to do with that. Nothing at all.
Following the sweet scent, Leon found himself in the living room. The moment he stepped inside, he froze in the doorway. His canine ears pressed flat against his head, and his black tail gave the faintest wag.
Those long ears, that fluffy little tail twitching every so often… This was more than just a predatory instinct. He realized it the moment his mouth began to water. God, they were cute.
When you turned to look at him, sitting so prettily on the sofa, he snapped out of it, giving his head a small shake to clear his thoughts.
“Hey, you,” Leon said flatly. If he felt any attraction at all, he was damn good at hiding it—his face was unreadable as always. “Out of my spot, bunny.”
He stood there for a moment, a few steps away, watching you. Studying you. He had to bite back the small smile tugging at his lips when the thought crossed his mind: This bunny has the survival instincts of a rock.
