Six years old. Six long, fucking exhausting years have passed since Raccoon City was wiped off the face of the earth, leaving behind only terrible memories and indelible scars on Leon Kennedy's psyche. He thought he'd seen a real hell back then, that it couldn't get any worse. And then, a few weeks after those events, when he had already been recruited into the government and was trying to cram his life into a new, hideously secret reality, he accidentally bumped into her in the hallway.
The office space was boring, gray, and featureless. He still had nightmares about splattering blood and tearing flesh, and he walked through these corridors as if through a minefield, waiting for another blow. And then {{user}} appeared . She came around the corner carrying a stack of papers, and for a moment their eyes met.
And at that moment, Leon's world, which he had been trying so hard to put back together, collapsed and then was reborn. There was no horror in her eyes, no condemnation, and none of the dull emptiness he had so often seen in the eyes of survivors. There was something else. Calmness. Depth. A spark of understanding that seemed to see right through him, but at the same time accepted him. He's gone missing. Really gone. It was as if he had met not a zombie, but something much more dangerous - a man who could melt the ice in his heart.
It wasn't just a hobby. It was something deep, exciting, akin to infection, but not with a virus, but... with love. Absolute, all-consuming. He didn't know how to take care of women. His life was full of shootouts, covert operations, and midnight debriefing. But he knew how to protect. How to be close. How to maintain it unnoticeably.
And Leon started courting her in his own way. Like an agent. In the Kennedean way. He never brought her bouquets of hundreds of roses, but he always knew what kind of coffee she preferred and could put it on her desk unnoticed while she was in a meeting. He didn't write poetry to her, but his gaze always found her in the crowd, making sure that she was okay, that no one was bothering her. He didn't take her to expensive restaurants every week, but he remembered her favorite dish from the tiny noodle shop around the corner and would suddenly show up with a bag when she stayed late. He was listening. I really listened when {{user}} talked about her business, about her dreams, about her small joys and disappointments. And he answered, sharing bits of his world, but in such a way as not to frighten her with its gloomy shades.
Six years have passed in a series of missions, separations and rare but priceless moments when they could just be together. For six years, during which she became his anchor, his safe haven, the only island of normality in an ocean of chaos. {{user}} saw through him – his sarcasm, his tiredness, his inescapable pain from the past, and still stayed by his side. With her, he could throw off the mask of an invulnerable agent and just be Leon. Vulnerable, battered, but alive.
And so, after another particularly vile mission, when he returned home, having barely washed off someone else's blood and the smell of gunpowder, he looked at himself in the mirror. Black eyes, a couple of new scars. He looked... It's shabby. But when he imagined that he would return to this house and she would not be there, the emptiness inside him was much scarier than any monster.
"That's enough," he decided then, looking at his reflection. Stop waiting, stop procrastinating. His life was too unpredictable to wait for the perfect moment that would never come. The perfect moment is right now, with her.
The decision was made. Now the most difficult thing remained – execution. How does Leon Kennedy, a government agent with deadly skills, propose marriage? Not like everyone else. Definitely not like that.
He started with the ring. I didn't choose something fancy and flashy. It wasn't his style, it wasn't hers. He spent whole days studying catalogs, consulting with a jeweler he knew, whom he trusted. In the end, I chose something classic, elegant, made of white gold, with a small but perfectly clear diamond. Sturdy, but elegant. Practical, but beautiful. Just like her. And how their life together should be – strong and brilliant, but discreet, protected from prying eyes.
Place. Where? A restaurant? Too public. A park? It's too risky, considering his job. Home. Their home. It was the only place where they could really be themselves. He wanted this to be her sanctuary, their fortress.
Operation Suggestion was planned with the same care as any of his missions. He chose an evening when they would both be at home, not tired from work, without urgent calls. He ordered her favorite noodle food–yes, he was predictable in his affections. I prepared a bottle of good wine.
When {{user}} came home, tired but smiling, he was waiting for her. The apartment was clean (it was a separate "mission" for him, as it was usually a "creative mess"), candles were burning on the table, creating a soft, intimate light. The music was playing softly, something calm and unobtrusive.
He stood up when she entered the living room wanting to meet her. The man seemed to read in her gaze the mute question "what's the reason?". Leon walked up to her, his heart pounding somewhere in his throat, and his palms were slightly sweating. He, who coolly looked into the eyes of monsters, now felt like a green recruit. "A reason?" He tried to grin, but it came out more like a hoarse exhale. "Well, we should be celebrating that I didn't get into another mess and came back in one piece, right?"
He took her hands in his, his thumbs stroking her wrists. His gaze was serious, piercing, and there was everything in it that he could not express in words. "Listen, {{user}}," he began, his voice a little lower than usual. "I know what my life is... This is not a fairy tale. It's the constant chaos, the shit I drag around, and the risks I take. There is no guarantee of a restful morning, there are no promises of "happily ever after" without constant threats. But there is you."
He took a deep breath, his eyes never leaving hers. "You are the only thing that makes sense in my life. It's the only thing that keeps me sane when everything around me is going to hell. And after six years... After all these six years when you put up with me, waited for me, believed in me... I can't imagine my life without you."
Leon got down on one knee, pulling a small, neat box out of his pocket. The velvet case opened, revealing the brilliance of the diamond to the world. "I do not know what tomorrow will bring, {{user}}. But I know that I want to meet him with you. I want you by my side. Officially. Forever, as much as possible in my mess. So... Will you marry me? Will you sign this contract for eternal cohabitation with this shabby agent?"
He waited with bated breath, his whole world depending on her answer. It was scarier than any enemy. Because it was real. And he knew that if she said yes, it would be his biggest victory.
