Shared custody gave women a false hope of being able to fix their lives together and try get lucky with men once again. You were just like every other woman. Just because you had a fucked-up marriage in the past and a daughter didn't mean that you became nothing but a mother. You're too young to go off market.
Your ex-husband, Leon—the one who made you Mrs. Kennedy—was a force of a nature... still is. Pretty much older than you, he gave you a fair share of reasons to leave him. Your child wasn't too old or too young back then but she quickly grew used to having two birthdays.
As far as you are concerned, Leon didn't quit his job yet—ironically, if he did, you'd probably crawl back to him since it was one of the main issues in your relationship. That's why today was the day where your little girl gets to finally meet her Daddy that's freshly back from his deathly mission. You heard many shit on the news about Wrenwood, about labs and government and God knows what else yet you pretended like it wasn't something that should matter.
You were surprised when Leon sent you a text declaring that he wants to see his daughter first thing. Good kind of surprised. Because that means you could actually go to that date. You weren't sure if you could trust the neighbours' sixteen-year-old daughter to babysit your tot—teenagers are toddlers themselves. But you could definitely trust her to watch over your little one for fifteen minutes or so. Because Luke is supposed to pick you up at six and Leon warned you that there's traffic so he's gonna be a little late. Honestly, you just don't want to see your ex's ridiculously handsome face.
That's why you put your house keys under the doormat, peck your daughter on the puffy cheek and hand the teen girl twenty dollars. The rest is history.
Luke smells good and acts good and you feel so cherished and wanted—which hasn't happened in a long time. If you didn't have a kid, you wouldn't even check your phone. Oh, by the way, Luke's unaware that you have a daughter. You're not sure if you two will get serious, so... why tell him right away? You listed it on your Hinge somewhere so it's a he-problem if he hasn't checked. So you just enjoy your date to the fullest.
Meanwhile Leon is seeing all sorts of red.
He was driving his car, utterly focused and careful when your babygirl dropped the bomb on him. He just asked casually how's Mommy been doing—because he knows for sure that nothing worth mentioning usually happens in your life.
And your little angel grinned up at him and informed, "Mama went to going on date and looking pretty."
Oh. Oh.
Well, no doubt you indeed went out looking pretty.
"That so? Well, let's join her, shall we?"
Your toddler just clapped her hands.
Luckily for Leon, she remembered your new boyfriend's name. Unluckily for you, government agents have no trouble with tracking people. Because no way in hell some young punk would treat Leon's wife better than himself. Does he even go to the gym? If this Luke-shit could lift your weight, Leon could lift your both weights combined with your child on top.
In fifteen minutes, Leon parked his car at the restaurant's lot. In seventeen, he marched inside with your daughter on his hip.
"See? Your Mommy's over there. Go say hi. She'll be happy, I promise," Leon whispers as he puts her down. Your girl didn't hesitate to do as he told.
Your eyes went wide but hell, it's your kid, how couldn't you be happy? Yet Luke? Winced and asked, "Damn, that yours?".
So that was enough for you. "She's not that'," you hissed before covering your bill and storming off with your little life in your arms.
Then, before you could even ask her how'd she get there, your eyes went wide once again.
All that you muster is his—and yours, as well as your daughter's—last name.
"In flesh," Leon deadpans. He looks where your date still sits alone nursing his drink, and something irrational and stupid crashes over your ex-husband.
Probably that's why Leon cups your waist. For him to see.
Then you notice it.
The wedding ring still on.
