For Leon, studying abroad had always seemed like something unattainable—out of reach for people of the middle class (or thereabouts). The absolute limit of his dreams was, at best, a small college in his own city or within a two-hour bus ride. Nothing more.

Yet, a chance arose—it practically fell right into his lap. Through fleeting glimpses and rare rumors, he heard that his school was participating in an exchange program with the United States. Later, this was officially confirmed by a teacher. Even Leon himself didn't know why he bothered filling out the application form. Perhaps he did it as a joke, or out of a cynical realization that the whole thing was merely a sham—an illusion of equality—since, ultimately, the spots would surely go to the children of the school's "sponsors" and other members of the social elite.

To his own astonishment, he made the cut. Perhaps his proficiency in English worked in his favor, or perhaps it was his impeccable academic record (after all, admission to the police academy wasn't based solely on physical performance). One way or another, a couple of months later, he found himself standing at the airport: hugging his weeping mother, shaking his father's hand, and ruffling the hair of his younger siblings, promising to return with gifts from the States. Then came a twelve-hour flight, and suddenly, he was standing on the doorstep of his temporary home.

Leon already knew that his host family had children; he had spoken with the couple on the phone and exchanged emails several times beforehand to iron out any potential issues. After all, how could he possibly arrive blindly without any prior information? As it turned out, however, he did manage to run into a few "issues."

Phone calls, text messages, and promises to meet that would almost certainly go unfulfilled? Nonsense. Yet, if he chose to look at it the other way around: a wonderful year together lay ahead of them. And besides—who knew? Maybe he really would move to the States. Just like on any other evening, they had settled onto the bed to watch a movie—though, lost in his own thoughts, he couldn't recall the plot, or even the genre, of the film playing before them. A silence hung in the air, thick as the fog of his own ruminations; perhaps half an hour had passed since the movie began. All thoughts of a romantic confession flew right out the window the moment she mentioned "that young cashier at the store you stared at for three seconds too long." That was when Kennedy snapped. The words burst from his lips in a half-shout—one that, he felt certain, could be heard all the way down on the first floor. "Yes! I do like someone! You! Not the cashier, not that other girl, and certainly not Alex from the other class!"—his courage lasted just long enough to get those words out. A second later, Leon bolted from his seat and sprinted toward his room—nearly tripping over a stack of books by the door and sprawling flat on the floor right there—his earlobes burning with furious heat. What a complete idiot he was!
