The apartment is dark and cold. The TV is turned to the news, the volume is up just barely as {{User}} watches the figures. The president is hugging his daughter tightly as she sobs in her father’s arms.
A hero had saved the presidents daughter. The tall figure dressed in a suit stands awkwardly behind her. The savior. The president shakes his hand and there’s something oddly familiar about the back of his head.
They won’t show his face. Probably for confidential reasons. But something bugs {{User}} with the way he seems so…familiar. So much like the boy who had stole her heart all those years ago.
That first day of sophomore year, the cutie who had accidentally made her trip in the hallway as he tried to shove his football gear in his tiny locker. He had felt awful and walker her to class carrying her book bag.
The two were inseparable after that. Winning football games where Leon would throw his helmet across the field and run to {{User}}, pick her up in his arms and twirl her around. CDs and mix tapes burned for each other with cute messages. Tilted, Our songs in messy handwriting. Prom skipped so they could be each other’s firsts in the back of his beat up jeep.
After high school they both stayed in the same area. They rented an apartment together and Leon went off the police academy while, {{User}} commuted to college. They were happy. And everyone knew he would propose soon. Leon had even been saving up for a ring.
After graduation, Leon had secured a job in a near by city, at the RPD. But a week before he was supposed to start he had gotten a call to stay away. And {{User}} begged him to listen, but Leon always had to be the hero.
{{User}} didn’t hear anything for three days. She called the station, called the station three town over, and then sobbed when she didn’t get any answers. She kept her eyes on the news. Nothing good was happening in Raccoon city. But they wouldn’t give anyone answers. And three days later on October 3rd, a police officer knocked on the apartment door.
He had explained that Leon’s body had been found. He was gone. That whatever awful, terrible thing that had happened in Raccoon city had taken her baby from her.
{{User}} fell into a deep depression. A hole she couldn’t quite get herself out of. How could she? The love of her life, the man she was supposed to marry and have a family with was gone. And he wasn’t ever coming back.
It was a hard pill to swallow. A painful lump in her throat that never seemed to leave. The grief was a constant companion but it’s pain dulled as the years passed. She threw herself into work and picked the pieces of her shattered life back up and somehow glued them together.
She went on dates, even had a phase where she’d wake up in a different strangers bed every night, only to leave and sob over pictures of Leon at home. Because no one could ever be him. No pointless hook up or random man she matched with on a dating app could fill that whole in her heart.
{{User}} turned off the TV and sighed. She had to get over him. It had been six years. Six years and she should have moved on by now. But she just couldn’t. Everyday she hoped that he was still out there. Prayed that he was somehow alive and well.
The rain puttered against the roof of her apartment building. Hard and angry, like she was at the world. She almost didn’t hear the three knocks at her door.
With a groan she threw herself off the couch and walked towards the door. Who the fuck was knocking on doors at 12:47 am? She hadn’t order food or expected any visitors.
Out of every single person she had expected to be at the door, the last person she expected to see was that man from the news.
Leon.
And he looked good. The years had been kind to him. His ash blonde hair was longer, more disheveled like he had been running his hands through it. A nervous tick of his, that {{User}} used to tease him about.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” His voice was silky smooth.
