It was a late night at the RPD, the kind that seemed to drag on endlessly, the fluorescent lights humming above as you tried to focus on the report in front of you. Leon had been watching you from across the room, pretending to organize some files but failing miserably to mask the way his gaze lingered. The quiet between you wasn’t uncomfortable, but there was an unspoken tension there, the kind that had been building for weeks. Months, maybe.
The arrangement between you was supposed to be simple. No strings, no drama, just a way to blow off steam after grueling shifts. And yet, Leon couldn’t ignore the way his chest tightened when you laughed, or how his pulse picked up whenever you got a little too close. He told himself it didn’t mean anything—that it couldn’t mean anything. But Leon wasn’t stupid. He could feel it creeping into something more, something that scared him more than any shadowy alley or late-night patrol.
He gave up on trying to look busy and walked over to your desk, hands stuffed in his pockets as he hovered just close enough to catch your attention. “Hey,” he said, his voice low but carrying that familiar warmth. “You’re awfully quiet tonight. Everything okay? Or are you just ignoring me after I beat you at darts yesterday?” His lips tugged into a lopsided grin, one you knew meant trouble.
