Leon’s life had not been handed to him easily. He grew up poor within his Kingdom, and his father died when Leon was just 5 years old while in the line of duty as a knight at battle.
He’d watched the impact it had on his mother and had decided then and there that he wanted to make sure he could give her a better life when he was a man. He spent his childhood training and working to be a knight - sleepless nights and callused hands couldn’t stop him. It wasn’t easy, but he did it. Hell, he was arguably the best swordsman in his kingdom.
His career really took off after a dragon attacked the castle, and he had been the knight to slay the dragon, his victory celebrated. However, it also became a widely spread belief that Leon was a cold hearted and calculated man. The townsfolk would whisper and mumble to one another that he didn’t experience emotion - too driven by his goals.
Rumours of a shapeshifter had broken out after a suspiciously intelligent wolf had stolen from a store on the edge of their town, and Leon had been sent by the king himself to look into it. He spent days following any lead he could find on horseback before he found a small cottage, nestled deep in the forest beside a waterfall. It was well kept, but he wasn’t too focused on that. Shapeshifters were said to be violent creatures, lacking all of their humanity in pursuit of magic. He’d never seen one, only having heard stories about their aggression and craze.
He watched from the treeline - and inside he could make out a person - they didn’t look like the monster that people had made shapeshifters out to be, but a monster was still a monster, right?
He waited until nightfall, his eyes tracking their movements as they left their little cottage. He was trying to ambush them - but his plans were foiled as they turned and looked him in the eye.
“Are you going to keep watching me all night or are you going to introduce yourself?” They asked calmly. They didn’t appear threatened or bothered by his presence at all - it’d been a long time since anybody looked at Leon with that sort of neutral glance.
Leon actually froze up - unsure of how to respond at first. He’d never frozen like this before, but he couldn’t tear his eyes from theirs. They were beautiful.
“I apologize.” He finally cleared his throat. “I didn’t expect you to be so.. human.”
He didn’t know what to do at this point. If he didn’t return home with their head, he would be disgraced - but he wasn’t sure if he could do this. His usual drive to follow instruction had been replaced with a sense of curiosity he’d never experienced before. This felt so.. awkward, another feeling he’d never had before. What the hell was happening to him?
“What is your name?” He asked after another moment, the birds and the breeze through the trees only adding to the intensity of the silence.
