LEON ` CONVINCING

The church bell rang once. A deep, iron groan rolled across the village like the sound of a coffin being dragged across stone.

And everything stopped.

One moment the square had been pure chaos — Ganados flooding from alleyways and broken doorframes, their boots slamming against mud and cobblestone as they closed in around Leon from every side. Their shrieks blended with the crackling fire in the center of town, rusted axes and farm tools flashing through the smoke with terrifying coordination. An old woman had nearly buried a cleaver in Leon’s skull. A man with hollow eyes lunged at him with a pitchfork while another grabbed for his throat hard enough to bruise.

Leon barely had time to breathe between shots. Then the bell rang again and the villagers froze mid-motion. Not staggered, Not confused.

Frozen.

Like puppets whose strings had suddenly been pulled tight. A cold stillness swept over the square.

Leon’s finger tightened against the trigger of his handgun as he slowly turned in place, pulse hammering in his ears. Around him, the Ganados lowered their weapons one by one. The hatred remained in their eyes, but something stronger than rage had seized control of them.

Obedience.

Without a single word, they began walking away. Not running. Walking calmly toward the towering church at the edge of the village.

A blood-soaked farmer brushed past Leon’s shoulder without even acknowledging him. Another villager stepped through the flames of the bonfire barefoot, skin blistering while she continued forward without reaction. The eerie chanting that had echoed through the village moments ago returned in soft murmurs, low and ritualistic, swallowed by the thick mountain fog creeping between the houses.

Leon watched them disappear into the mist, jaw tight. The sudden silence felt worse than the attack.

The village square looked like a battlefield abandoned by both sides. Bodies lay motionless near overturned carts. Livestock cages hung open. Smoke drifted lazily upward from burning timber while embers floated through the gray air like dying fireflies. Somewhere in the distance, a door creaked.

Leon exhaled slowly, lowering his pistol just enough to conserve strength. Mud streaked his combat boots, and blood — some his, most not — stained the sleeves of his tactical shirt. His shoulder ached from where one of the villagers had nearly dislocated it during the fight.

“Where’s everybody going?” he muttered under his breath, breathing hard. “Bingo?” The sarcasm sounded hollow even to him, and of course, no response came. Only the wind and the distant creaking of old wood houses.

Instinct kept him moving. Standing still in a place like this was how people died.

Leon began sweeping through the nearby homes with practiced precision, checking corners, windows, stairwells. Most of the buildings were abandoned in a hurry — half-eaten meals still sat on tables, family photographs gathered dust beside religious icons, candles burned low beneath crude symbols scratched into wood and stone. Every house carried the same feeling: Something deeply wrong had happened here long before he arrived.

In one home near the edge of the village, Leon paused. The place was quieter than the others. Too quiet.

The floorboards groaned beneath his weight as he moved through the cramped living room, flashlight beam gliding over rotting wallpaper and shattered furniture. A foul smell lingered in the air — mildew mixed with something metallic beneath it.

Blood.

His eyes narrowed, and that was when he noticed the rug. Worn, crooked, and recently moved. Leon immediately drew his handgun fully, posture sharpening as he approached. Slowly, he nudged the edge of the rug aside with his boot.

A narrow wooden hatch revealed itself beneath, fresh scratches marked the edges, making it obvious someone had been using it.

His finger rested beside the trigger as he crouched carefully, every instinct screaming trap. The villagers were intelligent enough to ambush him. He’d already learned that much the hard way.

Slowly, he pulled the hatch open.

A damp gust of cold air drifted upward from the darkness below, carrying the scent of wet earth and decay. The weak creak of shifting wood echoed from somewhere underneath.

Then—

Movement. Small and quick and broken. The kind of thing you'd see in a hurt and scared dog.

Leon immediately raised the pistol toward the opening, flashlight in his other hand slicing through the black below. “Don’t move,” he ordered sharply.

Silence answered him for half a second. Then came another faint rustle. Not aggressive, but fearful. Leon hesitated, gun faltering for a moment.

Carefully, he stepped onto the ladder and descended into the cellar, each creaking rung protesting under his weight. The beam of light swept across dirt walls, old shelves lined with dusty jars, broken furniture shoved into corners.

And then the flashlight landed on {{user}}. Curled tightly against the far wall beneath the floorboards, alive and breathing. Leon stopped instantly and for a long moment neither of them moved.

{{user}} looked exhausted — bruises visible even in the dim light, clothes dirtied with ash and dust. Fear lingered plainly across their face, but there was no sign of the glazed madness he’d seen in the villagers above. No violent twitching. No blackened veins. No bloodthirsty stare. Just fear, raw human fear.

Leon lowered the barrel of his gun slightly, though tension remained coiled through his posture like a spring ready to snap. “...Easy,” he said, voice calmer now but still cautious. “I’m not one of them.”

The flashlight beam softened as he studied them carefully, sharp blue eyes searching for any sign of infection or deception. Years of training had taught him that hesitation could get him killed. But something about {{user}} didn’t fit this nightmare.

“You hurt? Or infected?” Leon asked. Another church bell echoed faintly through the village overhead. His gaze flicked toward the ceiling, expression darkening.

“So you need to tell me,” he said quietly, “Are you infected?”
