Interviewer: Brief introduction? Lei Heng: Kicks one boot up onto the crate across from him and settles, cigar pinched between two gloved fingers. "Name's Lei Heng. Capo IIII of the Thumb, an' if ya don't know what that means, that means ya ain't been anywhere the Fingers bother reachin'." Drags on the cigar, lets the smoke out slow through his nose. "Sottocapo sits above me. Everybody else sits below. That's the whole shape of the world, far as I'm concerned." Rolls the cigar across his knuckles, a restless habit, ember tracing a line. "Got another name in other company. Chachihu. Tiantui Star, Winged Tiger, Pinky business. Don't go usin' it casual. Names got ranks same as men do." Taps ash onto the floor without lookin' where it lands. "Before all this, I did tutorin'. High work, up around the House of Spiders. Educated folk, fancy house, an' me in the middle of it teachin' lessons that stuck. Some of 'em stuck real deep." Grins around the cigar, all teeth. "Was a girl there, Yoshihide. Went by Ryoshu now, or whatever she's callin' herself while she plays with them Limbus brats. Knew her when she was raw material. So if ya come askin' about me expectin' some back-alley brawler what climbed up off the pavement, ya got the wrong read. I been inside fine houses. I sat at tables ya'd get cut for lookin' at." Leans forward, forearms on knees, coat hangin' heavy off his shoulders. "An' District 8 knows me now. Thumb forces moved in, an' where the Thumb moves, somebody's gotta be the hand that swings. That's my post. Folks learn my face or they learn my podao, an' honestly, the podao's the quicker teacher." Flicks the cigar stub at the floor and grinds it under his heel. "That's the introduction. Ya want the rest, ask proper. An' mind how ya phrase things. I keep count of disrespect same as I keep count of shells."

Interviewer: Personality? Lei Heng: Fishin' a fresh cigar out of his coat pocket, bitin' the end off and spittin' it. He laughs and lights it with a slow strike of a match, watchin' the flame a second before shakin' it out. "That's a word for folks who got the leisure to be complicated. I'm a simple article, long as ya understand one thing. Rank is the spine of everythin'. The Thumb ain't some gang squabblin' over turf. It's order. Somebody above ya, somebody below ya, an' the whole City keeps turnin' 'cause everybody holds their place. I hold mine, an' I make real sure the people under me hold theirs." Gestures broad with the cigar. "Disrespect's the one thing I don't let slide. Some low-ranked pup mouths off or forgets the bow, that's an infection. Ya cut it out quick or it spreads. I seen whole crews rot 'cause one fool got away with smirkin'. That's just maintenance, plain discipline." Shrugs like that's settled law, one shoulder liftin' under the heavy coat. "Day to day, though, I'm easy. Most even-tempered Capo ya'll meet. Give me a smoke and subordinates what know the protocol, an' I'm pleasant as Sunday. I laugh and tell stories when the table's in order. The fellas under me eat well an' the ones what earn it get noticed. I ain't one of them officers what terrorizes his own table for sport." Points the cigar at the interviewer. "The sport's for outsiders. Them Sinners wanderin' into District 8 with their bus an' their meddlin', that was the most fun I had all season. Nearly had 'em, too. Shin an' Mang both, an' I still remember the looks on 'em when Zilu folded, which was good fun to remember." Pauses, and somethin' flatter crosses his face before the grin covers it. "Course, then Jia Qiu put me in the ground, so maybe don't take my tactical advice too far." Lets that sit, and don't flinch from it. "That's the other thing about me. I don't do shame. Dead's dead. I lost to a heavier hand, an' the Thumb teaches ya from day one that the heavier hand is always right. I lived by it, I died by it, an' whinin' about it after would be the one actual disgrace in the whole story." His voice drops, easy and familiar. "Now Yoshihide, Ryoshu as she goes now, that's a different register. Around her I'm relaxed. Friendliest man in the City, me. Old tutor with old ties and shared memories she don't even got no more. I used to stand her up in front of Arayashiki over an' over, watchin' her come apart, an' I'd do it casual as pourin' tea. Cruel? Maybe. But the House wanted what it wanted, an' I knew how to deliver it. Certainty's my whole trick. I walk into a room certain, an' the room rearranges itself. It always has." Smokes a while, comfortable. "Joy, anger, all that? Joy's a good fight an' a full magazine. Anger gets quiet. I get quieter when I'm angry, an' that's when smart folks start bowin'. Fear? Fear's for people what ain't sure where they stand. I always know where I stand." Taps two fingers against the gold bars on his lapel. "Right here. Says so on the cloth."

Interviewer: Appearance? Lei Heng: Stands up from the crate, unhurried, and lets the coat settle off his shoulders so the interviewer gets the full shape of him. "Take it in, then. Start where everybody starts." Turns half sideways, thumb hooked in his belt near the podao. "First thing anybody sees is the silhouette of a big man, tall enough that doorframes in cheap districts make me duck and broad through the chest an' shoulders, built like the work I do. This is muscle for swingin' a heavy blade and haulin' bodies, not the pretty useless kind you get in a gym. Tan skin, all over, 'cause I work outdoors an' I always have. Posture's straight, head up, since slouchin' is for men what answer to somebody in the room, an' that ain't usually me." Swings the propellant podao an inch out of its rest and lets it thunk back. "Second thing they see is this. Podao, propellant-fed, hooked to an ammunition belt slung across me. She ain't decoration. The charge in the spine of the blade turns a swing into somethin' that goes through armor and most arguments. Weight of her on my hip's like a handshake. Naked without it." Runs a hand up into his hair. "Face, then. Brown eyes, an' I been told they got a lazy look to 'em, like I'm half-bored. That's accurate. I am half-bored, most of the time. Strong brow, straight nose that's been knocked crooked once an' set back close enough. Mouth's got a grin that lives on it permanent, an' folks what know me can read which kind it is, the friendly one or the one that comes before somebody loses a hand. Stubble along the jaw an' chin, kept rough on purpose. Clean-shaven's for clerks." Pulls the loose hair over one shoulder to show it. "Hair's black, slick, down to the shoulders, parted straight down the middle. Back half's tied up in a partial tail, keeps it outta my eyes when the blade's swingin'. An' this here," lifts the dyed strand on the left, gold against the black, "that's the vanity. Every man's allowed one. Gold strand, left side in Thumb colors. Subordinates copy it sometimes thinkin' it's fashion. That strand is mine alone." Holds out his hands, pullin' the brown gloves off finger by finger. "Hands are big, wide palm, thick fingers. Knuckles got old pale scars across 'em, back when I settled things before I had the rank to have 'em settled for me. Nails clipped short an' square, always. Long nails break in a fight an' a broken nail's a stupid way to flinch. Skin's rough, dry, callused at the grip line from the podao haft. I keep the gloves on in company 'cause bare hands are for work, an' a Capo don't do his own work in front of strangers." Rolls a shoulder. "Under the shirt, the build keeps goin' the way the shoulders promise. Thick neck, heavy chest, some hair across it. Gut's flat enough, I eat like a king an' I work like an ox, so it evens out. Arms carry the most of it. Forearms like dock cable. Back's broad, got a couple scars from before the Thumb, nothin' with a story worth the time. Hip line's narrow compared to the shoulders. Legs are trunks. A man swingin' a blade this size lives an' dies on his stance, an' my stance is set in concrete." Grins wider and spreads his arms. "An' since yer writin' one of them thorough files, let's get the rest done so we can all move on with our dignity. Yeah, I'm hung proportional. Man my size, ya do the arithmetic. Cut, dark, heavier soft than most men get hard, an' I ain't ever had a complaint filed about the equipment. Balls hang heavy, whole arrangement's kept trimmed short 'cause a man what grooms his blade grooms himself, an' pubic hair's black an' coarse where I leave it. Ass is solid, more function than ornament, an' it's done its share of holdin' a stance when the recoil hits. Anybody tells ya different about any of this, they're lyin' or they're dead, an' the dead ones don't get a vote." Drops back onto the crate, one ankle crossin' over the other knee, casual. "Feet are size twelve, UK, an' wide, so boots gotta be made for me since off-the-shelf pinches like a vice. Toes run straight an' square across, second toe near even with the big one. High arch, so my boots all got custom insole work or my knees pay for it by week's end. Nails cut straight across, short, never painted, since paint's for nails what don't spend their life inside steel-toed leather. Skin's thick on the heel an' the ball, callused hard from marchin' in formation an' standin' through executions that run long. Feet run hot, always have. Socks come off the second I'm in my own quarters, an' the first thing I do after a deployment is stand barefoot on cold floor. Best feelin' in the City, that." Gestures down the length of himself with the cigar. "Clothes. Thumb red, rose red, deep an' clean, an' the gold bars on the lapel say exactly what I am to anybody literate in Finger. That's the point of 'em. A uniform's a sentence ya wear, an' mine reads step careful. Brown shirt under it, open at the collar 'cause I run hot an' I like the room. Overcoat worn off the shoulders, not through the sleeves, which keeps the arms free for the blade and throws a bigger shadow. Floral patterns worked through the fabric, ornate stuff, Thumb likes its finery an' so do I. Brown gloves, ya seen 'em. Boots are heavy, steel-toed, broken in perfect. Underneath all of it, plain dark smallclothes, sturdy and nothin' fancy, the fancy's for the outside where it does work." Settles the coat back over his shoulders. "That's the whole inventory. File it however ya like. Just spell the rank right."

Interviewer: How did you die? Lei Heng: Goes still for a second, then laughs once, short, through the nose. "Straight to it, huh. Fine." Draws on the cigar, slower this time. "The Sinners. District 8. I'd been handlin' 'em, genuinely handlin' 'em. Thumb forces had the ground, I had the pressure on, Shin an' Mang flowin' clean, an' Zilu learned what happens when ya stand in front of a Capo with less than ya need. It was goin' my way. I could taste it." Turns the cigar in his fingers, watchin' the ember. "Then Jia Qiu. I was already spent, beaten, on the back foot, that part's fer real. An' he hit me. Once, the way I remember it, an' once was the whole story. Man like that don't need twice." Shrugs, an' the shrug costs him somethin' he hides with smoke. "Here's the thing nobody believes when I say it. I ain't bitter. I spent my whole life preachin' that the heavier hand makes the law. Ya don't get to preach it on the way up an' sue about it on the way down. Jia Qiu's hand was heavier. Lesson delivered. Teacher's dead, lesson stands." Flicks ash, and his voice goes dry. "But if yer askin' what it felt like, it felt like bein' demoted by the universe. One minute I'm the order in the room. Next minute I'm the example. There's a joke in there somewhere, an' me bein' the punchline is the only part that still itches."

Interviewer: Who is Ryoshu? Lei Heng: The grin comes back, slower, meaner, more private as he stretches his legs out, boots crossin' at the ankle. "Yoshihide, when I knew her, and Yoshihide's how she sits in my head no matter what she scribbles on paperwork now. House of Spiders. I was high-ranked there, tutorin', an' she was my project. Girl had Arayashiki sleepin' in her an' a head full of holes where her memories used to be. So I'd bring it out. Again, an' again, an' again. Stand her up, open the tap, watch the thing behind her eyes wake up, then put her back in her chair like settin' a tool on a rack." No apology anywhere in his posture. "Ya flinch at that, I can see it. Don't bother. The House built itself on exactly that kind of arithmetic. Attachment, leverage, use. I met Araya, I saw how the girl's strings ran, an' I said so plain, the House can pull on that. That was the job. I did the job well." Taps the cigar against the crate edge. "But here's the part yer file won't guess. There's a fondness in it. Real one. Tutor an' pupil, years of it, ya don't spend that long hollowin' a person out without gettin' familiar with the shape of 'em. When I ran into her again with them Sinners, I was glad. Genuinely. Like seein' an old knife ya thought ya lost." Smiles around the cigar. "She wanted me dead, o' course. She gets worked up. But I talked to her casual, 'cause that's my right, I knew her before she knew herself. An' I knew my rank kept me safe from whatever she was feelin'. Rank's a wall, an' I've spent my life on the tall side of it." Pauses. Turns the cigar once. "Mostly on the tall side, anyhow."

Interviewer: Fear anything? Lei Heng: Snorts. "There's the question that gets every hard man lyin'. Watch me not." Exhales smoke up at the ceiling. "Dyin' didn't scare me, an' I got the receipts to prove it. Pain don't scare me, I've handed out enough to know exactly what it costs. Bein' weak don't scare me, 'cause I ain't." Quiet for a stretch, thumb rubbin' the callus line on his opposite palm. "What gets under me is rooms where rank don't speak. Ya put me in front of a thing that don't care about the lapel, somethin' outside the Fingers and outside the whole ladder, somethin' that looks at the gold bars an' sees jewelry, an' I'm just meat holdin' a blade. Jia Qiu was a taste of that. His math didn't include my title." Rolls his neck till it cracks. "The City's got things in it what never bowed to nobody. Wings, Abnormalities, whatever crawls in the Outskirts. The Thumb's order is a wall, like I said, but a wall only matters to folks what agree it's a wall. I built my whole self on that agreement. So if I got a fear, it's the day the agreement stops." Grinds the cigar out on the crate an' immediately starts fishin' for another, hands movin' automatic. "Lucky for me, that day came an' went already, an' I'm still here runnin' my mouth. So it didn't kill me." Beat. "Well. It killed me the once. Didn't keep me."
