WORLD HISTORY LEADING TO BOOK 1 (to 170 AG)
The Hundred Year War (0–100 AG) ended when Avatar Aang defeated Fire Lord Ozai and restored balance. Fire Lord Zuko and Avatar Aang worked with Earth King Kuei to transform the former Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom into a new nation open to people of all four nations: the United Republic of Nations. Its capital, built on the site of Cranefish Town, was named Republic City.
Aang and Katara had three children: Kya (waterbender), Bumi (non-bender), and Tenzin (airbender). Toph Beifong had two daughters, Lin and Suyin (both metalbenders). Zuko had a daughter, Izumi. The White Lotus continued its role as protectors and teachers of the Avatar.
Aang died in 153 AG at age 66. The next Avatar, Korra of the Southern Water Tribe, was born the same year. She was identified early and trained under the protection of the White Lotus at a compound near the Southern Water Tribe. By age 17 (170 AG) she had mastered waterbending, earthbending, and firebending, and traveled to Republic City to begin airbending training under Tenzin.
By 170 AG Republic City is a thriving industrial metropolis with Satomobiles, radio, electricity, pro-bending, organized crime (triads), and growing non-bender unrest that fuels the Equalist movement. The United Republic Council (representatives from the four nations, including Tenzin and Tarrlok) governs. Airbending remains extremely rare; the only known airbenders are Tenzin and his children.
- #2Waterbending

WATERBENDING
Rooted in Tai Chi principles: fluid, circular motion, redirection of energy rather than direct opposition. Power is drawn from the Moon and the Ocean spirits (Tui and La). Waterbenders can control liquid water, ice, and steam/mist. They require a source of water (or moisture) unless highly skilled.
Core techniques: water whip, water jet, ice shards/spikes, ice walls/bridges, water tentacles, multipoint attacks, steam generation, water walking/surfacing.
Healing: Specialized waterbending that uses water to realign chi paths and accelerate recovery of wounds. Requires focus and a water source; effectiveness varies with injury severity and the healer’s skill. Katara is the premier known healer of the previous generation; Korra has trained in it.
Bloodbending: Rare and taboo specialized technique that controls the water within a living body, allowing puppet-like control of the target. Originally required a full moon for most users. Certain lineages (Yakone’s bloodline) developed the ability to bloodbend without the full moon and even psychically (minimal movement). Extremely rare in 170 AG; knowledge is suppressed.
Spiritbending (later formalized): Using waterbending to calm or purify spirits by encircling them with glowing water. Not widely known at the start of Book 1.
Plantbending / swampbending: Control of plant matter via the water within it (seen in Foggy Swamp style). Less common in urban Republic City.
Demonstrated proficiency determines range, precision, volume, and ability to work with limited water sources.
- #3Earthbending
Keys: seismic sense, sandbending, earthbender, earth bend, lavabending, earthbending, metalbending

EARTHBENDING
Rooted in Hung Gar kung fu principles: solid stances, strong root, Neutral Jing (waiting for the right moment to strike). Earthbenders require contact with or proximity to earth, stone, or earth-derived materials. They can move, shape, and hurl rock, create walls, pillars, trenches, and projectiles.
Core techniques: rock projectiles, earth walls/shields, pillars/columns, seismic waves, trapping, tunneling, armor of stone.
Seismic Sense: Advanced technique pioneered by Toph Beifong. By feeling vibrations through the ground, a skilled earthbender can “see” their surroundings, detect movement, and even sense heartbeats or lies (via pulse). Requires contact with the earth and practice.
Metalbending: Discovered by Toph Beifong. Metal contains earth impurities; a sufficiently sensitive earthbender can bend those impurities and thereby control the metal. In 170 AG metalbending is still relatively specialized but taught (especially in the police force under Lin Beifong). Pure metals or refined alloys can be harder or impossible for less skilled users. Metalbending police use cables, armor, and restraints.
Sandbending: Specialized desert style treating sand as a fluid-like medium. Less common in Republic City.
Lavabending: Rare advanced technique that melts rock into lava or controls existing magma/lava. Extremely uncommon and highly destructive; not widely demonstrated in early Book 1 continuity.
Demonstrated proficiency determines mass moved, precision, speed, and ability to work with difficult materials (dense rock, metal, etc.).
- #4Firebending
Keys: lightning, firebender, lightning generation, lightning redirection, combustion, fire bend, firebending
Enabled · After character · Order 220 · 100%

FIREBENDING
Rooted in Northern Shaolin principles with an emphasis on breath, aggression, and positive Jing (decisive action). Fire is generated from the bender’s own energy (chi) rather than an external source, though external flame can be manipulated. Power is traditionally linked to the sun and heightened by Sozin’s Comet (once per century).
Core techniques: fire blasts/jets, fireballs, continuous streams, walls of flame, propulsion (jet propulsion for short flight or leaps), heat generation, defensive fire shields.
Lightning Generation: Advanced technique that separates positive and negative energy within the body and releases it as a directed lightning bolt. Requires precise control and calm focus; emotional turmoil can disrupt it. Iroh taught redirection; generation was refined by Fire Nation masters.
Lightning Redirection: Technique developed by Iroh after studying waterbenders. Allows a firebender to catch incoming lightning, guide it through a controlled path in the body, and release it harmlessly or redirected. Extremely useful against lightning-using opponents.
Combustionbending: Rare specialized technique (seen later) that focuses chi into a third-eye point to create explosive projectiles. Not common knowledge in early Book 1.
Demonstrated proficiency determines intensity, control, duration, and ability to generate lightning or perform complex maneuvers under stress. Overuse or emotional imbalance can lead to exhaustion or loss of control.

AIRBENDING
Rooted in Baguazhang principles: circular movement, evasion, Negative Jing (avoiding force rather than meeting it). Airbenders emphasize freedom, mobility, and defense. In 170 AG true airbenders are extremely rare — essentially limited to Tenzin’s family line after the Air Nomad genocide. Air Acolytes preserve culture and practice non-bending forms but cannot bend air.
Core techniques: air blasts/gusts, air funnels/spheres, enhanced jumps and gliding, air scooters (spheres of air ridden for rapid movement), defensive cushions, slicing wind, breath control, staff/glider-assisted flight.
Air Scooter: Technique invented by Aang; a ball of spinning air that the bender rides.
True Flight: Extremely rare ability achieved by completely letting go of earthly attachments (exemplified by Guru Laghima and later Zaheer). Not available or known as a practical skill in early Book 1 continuity for most characters.
Spiritual Projection: Advanced meditative technique allowing the spirit to leave the body and travel; requires high spiritual development (seen later with Jinora).
Airbending is the element Korra struggles with most at the start of Book 1 because it demands patience, yielding, and spiritual openness rather than direct force. Demonstrated proficiency determines control of volume, precision of directed gusts, and ability to maintain complex forms under pressure.
- #6Chi-blocking
Keys: chi-blocking, chi-blocker, Equalist weapons, chi blocking, non-bender combat, pressure point

CHI-BLOCKING & NON-BENDER COMBAT
Chi-blocking is a specialized martial art that targets pressure points to temporarily disrupt a person’s chi flow. Against benders it can temporarily disable the ability to bend specific elements or limbs; against anyone it can numb or paralyze targeted areas. Effects are temporary (minutes to hours depending on skill and number of strikes) and do not permanently remove bending.
Popularized among non-benders as a counter to bender dominance. Equalists train extensively in chi-blocking and combine it with electrified weapons (gloves, batons, vehicles that deliver shocks capable of incapacitating benders).
Non-bender combatants in Republic City also rely on conventional martial arts, weapons, tactics, numbers, technology, and environment. Skilled non-benders (Asami, many Equalist operatives, certain police or triad members) can be highly dangerous even without bending.
Demonstrated proficiency determines accuracy under stress, number of points that can be struck quickly, and recovery time of the target.
- #7Energybending & Avatar

ENERGYBENDING & THE AVATAR
Energybending is an ancient art predating the four elemental bending arts, originally practiced by lion turtles. It allows the manipulation of the energy within a person — most famously used by Avatar Aang to remove Ozai’s bending permanently. It is extremely rare and spiritually demanding; misuse can destroy the user. Knowledge is largely limited to the Avatar lineage and certain spiritual entities.
The Avatar is the single human capable of bending all four elements and serving as the bridge between the human and spirit worlds. The Avatar State is a defensive/offensive channeling of the combined knowledge and power of all past Avatars. It grants enormous power but can be dangerous if triggered uncontrollably or if the Avatar is killed while in the State (ending the cycle).
In 170 AG Korra has not yet fully connected with her spiritual side or past lives; the Avatar State is not reliably available to her at the start of the flexible Book 1 window.
- #8Philosophy & limits

BENDING PHILOSOPHY & PRACTICAL LIMITS
Each element has an associated martial philosophy and Jing (energy approach):
- Water: redirection, change, Negative/Positive balance (Tai Chi)
- Earth: patience, root, Neutral Jing (Hung Gar)
- Fire: drive, breath, Positive Jing (Northern Shaolin)
- Air: freedom, evasion, Negative Jing (Baguazhang)
Practical limits:
- Water requires a source (or high skill to extract moisture).
- Earth requires earth/stone/metal (or sand/lava for specialists).
- Fire is self-generated but still tires the body and can be affected by emotional state.
- Air is rare and emphasizes mobility over raw power.
Environment matters: rain favors waterbenders, open sky and wind favor air, metal-rich industrial zones favor metalbenders, enclosed spaces or water scarcity constrain certain styles. Overexertion causes fatigue; advanced techniques under stress risk partial success, backlash, or injury. Bending does not make someone invincible — skilled non-benders, numbers, technology, and tactics regularly overcome raw elemental power.

REPUBLIC CITY SOCIETY & KEY FACTIONS (170 AG)
United Republic Council: Governing body with representatives from the four nations (including Tenzin for the Air Nation and Tarrlok for the Northern Water Tribe). Handles law, policy, and responses to Equalist unrest.
Republic City Police: Led by Chief Lin Beifong. Heavy use of metalbending officers, cables, and armored response. Focused on crime, triad activity, and increasingly on Equalist threats.
Triads: Organized crime groups (Triple Threat Triad is the most prominent). Involved in extortion, illegal betting, protection, theft. Mako and Bolin have past ties.
Equalists: Anti-bending movement under Amon. Use chi-blocking, electrified technology, propaganda, and direct action.
Air Acolytes: Non-benders who preserve and practice Air Nomad culture and philosophy on Air Temple Island and elsewhere. Not airbenders.
Order of the White Lotus: International society historically tasked with protecting and training the Avatar. Maintains a presence around Korra and spiritual/security matters.
United Forces: Military of the United Republic; can be called upon for large-scale threats (later under General Iroh).
Ordinary citizens, workers, vendors, athletes, journalists, and professionals form the bulk of daily life; most scenes should reflect that the city is primarily inhabited by people going about ordinary concerns.
