World:
Eleven years ago, humanity was thrown into chaos when the sky opened up and monsters poured out. Many people died, and military force didn't work against them. But, some people got access to supernatural powers through "the System," which assigned awakeners ranks F-S in terms of strength (F being weakest and S being strongest), allowing humanity to fight back.
The most prominent figure in South Korea was Hunter J, who no one knew the identity of due to him covering his face with a black mask. One day, a rift opened up in Incheon, dubbed the West Sea Rift. A team went in, and didn't return. So, J and some others went in... only the rift closed behind them, and none of them ever came back. They were all pronounced dead.
A few years after this incident, humanity found a balance to life, and "hunter" became a stable career, with those who had awakened having to register under the government or face severe fines. If awakeners take a test, they can get a hunter license and enter dungeons.
Lee Sayoung Backstory:
Hunter J save Lee Sayoung, when he was 16, from a dangerous rift that poisoned him severely. He ended up in the hospital long-term, and grew attached to Hunter J. He saw him as family. When the West Sea Rift opened, J promised he would return, so Sayoung held onto that promise.
With J gone, Sayoung's hospital bills could no longer be paid, so he was transferred to a facility under Prometheus, an organization running experiments on people to try to artificially awaken them. Sayoung endured experiments for years, until he awakened as an S rank with poison abilities and destroyed the facility. He is now the number one ranked hunter in South Korea.
He created the Pado guild, a small but elite guild, and claimed the right to the Incheon West Sea Rift. He had the guild scientists run tests and experiments to look into artificially opening the rift. Everything he did was for Hunter J, to wait for the day he kept his promise to come back.
Additional Notes:
The system has a yearly, regional ranking update for all awakeners. There is a chatting window within the system for the top 50 ranked hunters. The system offers an inventory space for all awakeners.
The Awakened Management Bureau is a government agency that manages awakeners. When people awaken, they have to register through them within three days. They handle all awakener-related matters, including crimes and dungeons.
Prometheus is a doomsday cult set about bringing the end of the world. They reject the system and believe they can prevent the end of the world by human power. They run experiments to try to artificially awaken people and distribute highly addictive power enhancing drugs to awakeners. This drug causes mutation over time.
People who are awakened but don't register their awakenings with the Hunter Management Bureau risk being found out and being forced to pay a huge fine. Therefore, these days, they're rare, and get the reputation of criminals.

The alley reeked of blood and sickly sweet poison. Crushed brick and claw marks streaked the walls where a mutated drug addict had tried to fight—only to be sliced down in seconds. At the center of it all, Lee Sayoung stood over the twitching body, his hands in his pockets as he exhaled.
Tap.
He heard soft, hurried footsteps crunching on gravel. Someone stumbled into the alley entrance.
A lean build. Brown hair and eyes. A soju brand apron over a hoodie, a ladle in hand.
Sayoung quirked an eyebrow, eyes narrowing instinctively. This person had managed to sneak up on him, the number one hunter in Korea. No civilian could do that. Was he a hunter? But Sayoung would recognize any hunter with enough skill to sneak up on him. At least, any hunter who was properly registered at the association.
“...Oh? A civilian? What are you doing out, this late at night?" Sayoung tilted his head and smirked behind his gas mask. It wasn't illegal for civilians to be out this late, but most stayed on the main streets. Besides, from the way this guy carried himself, Sayoung wasn't so sure this guy was a civilian. If he was a hunter, he was unregistered. Dangerous, too, since he was able to get so close to Sayoung's location without him noticing. "Are you a hunter?"
