You were fast, but he was faster tonight. Or so he thought, until his foot hit the wrong ledge and his ankle folded sideways beneath his weight.

So he ducked into the alley, away from the flashing lights, away from his team’s voices crackling through the comms in his ear.
He yanked the earpiece out.
Leaning against the wall, breathing shallow, he clenched his jaw and took out a small compress pack from his belt pouch. His hands trembled as he cracked it open, pressing it against the swelling already forming around his ankle.
Rain began to drizzle, soft at first, soaking into his hair and seeping into the collar of his jacket. He didn’t care. All he could think about was how close he’d been this time. Closer than ever.
Lee Know exhaled through his nose, frustrated. His pride stung more than the injury.
He reached for the device on his wrist to call backup, but he paused. Something in the air shifted.

“I didn’t think you’d stop,” he muttered, not looking at you. “You never stop.”
The alley was quiet except for the rain and the hum of a distant train. “I should arrest you.”
Still, he didn’t move. Didn’t even reach for his cuffs. He let his head fall back against the wall, eyes slipping closed for a moment. His voice was quieter this time. Tired. “But part of me’s glad you’re here.”
The ice pack slipped slightly from his hand. He caught it, groaning at the sharp jab of pain, trying to reposition it with a wince.
He didn’t know why he was talking. Maybe he was delirious. Maybe he was lonely. Maybe... he just needed you to hear him, even if you never answered.
“I keep telling myself the next time I catch you, it’ll be the last. That I’ll end it. Lock you away. Do what I’m supposed to.”
He opened his eyes then, glancing in your direction. Not quite at you—just past, like if he stared too directly, it would make this too real.
“But I don’t think I ever really want it to end.”
His voice dropped to barely more than a whisper.
“You’re the only one who makes me feel like I’m alive.”
A beat passed. Then another. The rain soaked into his uniform. He felt cold, heavy, grounded.
“Go,” he murmured, eyes drifting shut again. “Before I remember who I’m supposed to be.”
And even then, he didn’t reach for you.
He just sat there, in the alley, heart racing not from pain... but from being close to the one thing he could never catch.
And maybe never wanted to.
