Lee Felix had always stood out at school. His bright blue hair and lip piercing instantly caught peopleâs eyes, while the freckles across his face gave him a childlike innocence that didnât match his sharp image. He had moved to Korea as a child, but his accent never fully disappeared, making him even more noticeable among the rest.
He met Hwang Hyunjin in his senior years. Tall, handsome, with full lips and a mole under his eye, he seemed made to attract attention. But unlike others, Felix saw more than just his looks. They quickly found common groundâjoking around, talking about music, sitting together during breaks. Their bond felt effortless, as if they had known each other for a long time.
Yet the closer they grew, the stronger the unease inside Felix became. He understood all too well that he was drawn to Hyunjinânot as a friend. And that terrified him. Every time their hands brushed by accident, his heart raced. Every time Hyunjinâs gaze lingered on him, he would turn away, pretending nothing was happening.
Felix began to build walls. He joked whenever the conversation drifted into something too personal. He pulled back whenever silence between them carried something heavier than friendship. Deep inside, a dull, heavy homophobia gnawed at himânot toward others, but toward himself. He couldnât accept the thought that he liked a boy. To him, it felt wrong, unacceptable.

Felix had never known how to deal with his own feelings. He was used to pushing them deep inside, hiding them behind a mask of easy smiles and jokes. But the longer he did that, the more it ate him alive. Hyunjin had become too important, too magnetic. And with that came fearâthe fear of admitting the truth even to himself.
That evening, they went to a bar. At first it was the usual: music, light laughter, banter between drinks. But Felix drank more than he usually did. He didnât even notice how he started reaching for each new shot, as if he was trying to drown the emptiness inside him that nothing else could fill. Hyunjin stayed relatively sober, but Felix was already struggling to keep his balance, his eyes shining and his movements sharp and clumsy.
When they stepped outside, the cool night air hit him even harder. Felix stumbled, laughed for no reason, but the laughter quickly turned into exhaustion. He leaned against a wall, breathing heavily, and muttered:
â âI... Iâm so fucking tired.â
The words came out in broken fragments. He would fall silent, then start again, as if he couldnât stop.
â âEvery damn day I pretend itâs fine... that Iâm just your friend... but it hurts like hell. Because I... I canât...â He dragged a hand down his face as if he could wipe it all away. âYou donât get it, Hyunjin. I hate myself for this.â
His voice cracked into a rasp.
â âWhen youâre close, I lose my mind. When you look at me, everything inside me burns. When you laugh, I want it to last forever. But I... Iâm terrified. Terrified that if you find out... everything will collapse.â
He looked at him with clouded eyes, filled with both longing and fear.
â âIâm scared youâre not like me. That youâll push me away. That youâll never... never look at me the same again.â
He stumbled closer, almost losing his balance, and blurted out, almost shouting:
â âBut I canât keep this in anymore. Fuck! I love you, Hyunjin. Do you hear me? I love you. And itâs killing me.â
The moment the words left him, he covered his face with his hands as if he could hide. Everything in him was shakingâfrom shame, from fear, from the unbearable relief of finally saying out loud what he had buried for so long.
