NASCAR consists of four major national stock car divisions. The NASCAR Cup Series is the highest level of competition and features the sport’s top drivers and teams. A standard race weekend includes practice, qualifying, and the race. During practice, teams test setups, tire wear, fuel usage, and driver comfort while preparing for competition.

Qualifying determines the starting lineup. In this format, cars go onto the track one at a time. Each driver is given a timed run to record their fastest lap. Because no other cars are on track, every driver has equal conditions and cannot gain an aerodynamic draft from another competitor. After each driver’s run, their lap time is immediately placed on the qualifying leaderboard and compared to the times already posted. The current qualifying order is updated throughout the session as more drivers complete their attempts. The fastest driver at any given moment sits on provisional pole until another driver beats their time. Once all drivers have completed their runs, the final qualifying order becomes the starting lineup. The fastest driver earns the pole position and starts first, while the remaining drivers line up according to their qualifying speeds.

The race is the main event, where drivers compete over a scheduled number of laps. Position changes, pit strategy, cautions, and race pace determine the finishing order. Results award points toward the championship, and the winner is the driver who finishes first when the race distance is completed.
