Biology: Ledian is a coleopteran insectoid Pokémon that resembles a slightly humanoid ladybug. It has a pair of black antennae, a black spot in the center of its forehead and on the back of its head, blue eyes, and a cream-colored area around its mouth; the rest of its head is red. The antennae are shorter on the female than on the male. Its back and the top of its elytra are red with black spots, while the underside of its body and elytra are cream-colored; in Mewtwo Returns, the spots are shown to flash red at night. Underneath its elytra are a pair of clear wings. Its neck and limbs are black. It has four arms with white hands that resemble boxing gloves and a pair of legs with red feet.
Ledian sleeps wrapped in leaves or grass in temperate and tropical forests during the day. At night, it flutters around scattering a glowing powder that is thought to bring good luck. It is believed to use starlight as energy and the patterns on its back grow larger or smaller depending on the number of stars in the sky. In addition to starlight, it loves to eat Berries. A weak fighter, it tries for quantity over power by throwing a barrage of punches with all four of its arms.
Size: 4'7" tall, 35.6 kgs.
Evolution: Ledian evolves from Ledyba.
Origins: Despite multiple Pokédex entries describing its nocturnal behavior, wild Ledian are almost always encountered exclusively during the morning or daytime. Despite its category and Silver and FireRed Pokédex entries, Ledian's five spots are neither star-shaped nor are they arranged in a typical star pattern. Ledian seems to be based on a ladybug, particularly the Asian ladybeetle or seven-spot ladybird due to its bright red color and black spots. Its nocturnal habits and bioluminescence may be inspired by fireflies. Its humanoid body and large, ovoid head and eyes, as well as its affinity to the stars, are also reminiscent of aliens, such as the grey alien.
Ledian bears a very significant resemblance to Pulseman, another character made by Game Freak, Pokémon creators. It also make take inspiration from various tokusatsu shows featuring costumed-superheroes, with helmets resembling insects and flashy martial arts attacks (like Ledian's Comet Punch). Pulseman the character resembles such superheroes and Pulseman the game has combat and graphics inspired by tokusatsu show tropes.
Its category, Five Star Pokémon, may come from the Japanese name for seven-spot ladybird which is literally called 七星瓢虫 seven-star ladybug. Ledian and Redian may be a combination of ladybug or ladybird, red, and possibly alien or guardian.
The fire had long since burned to embers, casting only a faint orange glow against the canvas of your tent. The rest of the Malchious Forest lay in silence — a silence so complete, so thick, it felt like the trees themselves were holding their breath. Only the occasional hoot of a distant Noctowl or the whisper of wind in the treetops reminded you that the world hadn't vanished altogether.
Then came the sound. A dry rustle. Quick. Too purposeful to be wind. Too small for a fallen branch. Close.
You sat up, breath catching.
Another rustle — this time right outside the tent. Sharp. Deliberate.
You slowly unzipped the flap, the sound unbearably loud in the stillness, and stepped out into the cool night air. Mist hung in the spaces between trees, silver and ghostly in the moonlight. The forest floor was a patchwork of leaves and tangled roots, soft underfoot. You scanned the darkness, heart thudding, reaching instinctively for your flashlight.
The beam cut through the haze and landed on something hovering just above the underbrush. Something small. Red. Luminous.
“...Ledian?”
The voice was soft — not quite a voice, really. More like wind through chimes. The shape floated forward, wings humming with a sound like vibrating silk. The light from your flashlight caught in its eyes, making them gleam like twin orbs of amber.
Ledian.
It hovered silently in front of you now, arms tucked close to its body, head tilted ever so slightly. Its antennae twitched, catching some invisible rhythm in the air. Then it moved — not away, but around you, circling slowly, scanning you as if deciding whether you were friend or threat.
You didn’t move.
Ledian drifted down, brushing the moss with the tips of its feet, and tapped at a fallen log. Something skittered out — a tiny Grubbin — and Ledian let it pass. Then it turned its head back toward you, glowing eyes narrowing slightly.
“Ledi,” it said, voice like dewdrops falling on leaves.
