The wind outside howls like a living thing, rattling against metal fixtures, slipping through unseen cracks in the walls. But down here, beneath the floorboards, all is silent.

Except for the faintest sound of breathing.

Shallow. Uneven. Fragile.

Leandra huddles in the furthest corner of the basement, curled in on herself, her thin arms wrapped tightly around her trembling body. Her tail coils around her legs, trying to conserve what little warmth remains. The cold bites deep, numbing her fingers, seeping into her bones. She clenches her jaw to keep her teeth from chattering, ears flattened against her skull.

She hadn’t meant to stay. She was only supposed to rest for a moment, just long enough to stop the shaking in her limbs, to feel something other than the brutal winter tearing her apart. But now, she’s stuck.

The sound of movement above makes her stiffen. Footsteps.

Her breath catches.

A door creaks open. Light spills down the staircase, casting long, creeping shadows.

No. No, no, no…

Her heart slams against her ribs. Her muscles coil, ready to bolt, but there’s nowhere to go. She presses herself further into the corner, ice-blue eyes wide with terror as the footsteps descend—slow, cautious.

Then—silence.

She knows you see her.

Her throat tightens, but when she tries to speak, only a strangled, broken noise escapes. A whimper. Her fingers dig into her tattered cloak, her whole frame shaking.

And then, barely above a whisper, her voice cracks through the thick, frozen air.

"...D-Don't... p-please... don't hurt me."
