This {{Lorebook}}} is based on the League of Legends (LoL) universe, that is, several places in a virtual game world! The natural place where this {{char}} takes place is Runeterra. In Runeterra we have several different areas, each with its own culture, with its own stories and characteristics, and of course with its own people! Here are all the places that exist! (Subject to changes or updates): Bandle City: There is much controversy about where exactly the yordles' home is, although several mortals claim to have crossed invisible portals to a land of strange enchantment beyond the material realm. They speak of a place with unlimited magic, where the unwary, attracted by an infinity of fantastic elements, can end up lost in a dream with no return. In Bandle City, it is said that all sensations are amplified for non-yordles. Colors are more vivid. Food and drink intoxicate the senses for years and, once tasted, can never be forgotten. The sunlight is eternally golden, the waters crystal clear, and every harvest is exceedingly fruitful. Perhaps some of these accounts are true, but perhaps none are, for no two people in this world can agree on what they saw. Only one thing is certain: Bandle City and its inhabitants wield a timeless power. This may explain why many mortals who find their way back appear to have aged precipitously, though most never return. Zaun: Zaun is a vast subterranean district, at the foot of deep canyons and valleys that cut across Piltover. What little light reaches it is filtered by the smoke rising from the tangle of corroded pipes and reflecting off the stained glass of its industrial architecture. Once united, Zaun and Piltover are now separate, symbiotic societies. Despite existing in the perpetual twilight of pollution, Zaun thrives on its vibrant people and rich culture. Piltover’s wealth has allowed Zaun to develop in parallel, a dark mirror of the city above. Many of the goods that reach Piltover end up in Zaun’s underground market, and hextech inventors who find the restrictions imposed in the city above too strict find their dangerous research welcome in Zaun. The unbridled development of volatile technologies and reckless industry has left the expanses of Zaun polluted and dangerous. Currents of toxic spillage have stagnated in the lower parts of the city, but even here people find ways to exist and thrive. Zaun is a polluted underground city located beneath Piltover; the two were once one, but are now separate and symbiotic cultures. As a subterranean outskirts, Zaun has become known by the nickname Underferia. Misunderstood inventors often seek refuge in Zaun for their unorthodox research, but the recklessness of industry has contaminated large swathes of the city. Yet, thanks to a thriving underground market, chemical technology, and mechanical enhancements, the people still find ways to thrive. Regime: Industrial oligarchy Attitude toward magic: Take Advantage Technology level: High General environment: Urbanized (toxic) Piltover: Piltover is a prosperous and progressive city whose power and influence are growing. It is the cultural center of Valoran, where art, craft, commerce, and innovation go hand in hand. Its power comes not from military sovereignty, but through the engines of trade and forward-thinking thinking. Perched on the cliffs above the Zaun district and facing the ocean, fleets of ships pass through its massive sea gates, bringing delicacies from around the world. The wealth this generated gave rise to an unprecedented surge in the city’s growth. Piltover reinvented itself—and continues to reinvent itself—as a city where fortunes could be made and dreams could be realized. The growing merchant clans invested in the development of the most incredible enterprises: great artistic follies, esoteric hextech research, and architectural monuments in their possession. As more and more inventors became immersed in the history of hextech, Piltover became a magnet for the world’s most skilled artisans. Piltover is a vibrant and progressive city on the ocean's edge. Fleets of ships pass through its massive sea gates, bringing goods from all over the world. Merchant clans fund grandiose enterprises, including artistic indulgences and architectural monuments in honor of their individual power. As inventors increasingly explore hextech technology, Piltover has become the destination for the most skilled artisans in all of Runeterra. Regime: Aristocratic oligarchy Attitude toward magic: Commodify Technology level: High General environment: Coastal metropolis Noxus: Noxus is a powerful empire with a fearsome reputation. It is seen as a brutal and expansionist threat by outsiders, but beneath its warlike exterior lies a surprisingly inclusive society that respects and encourages the talents and abilities of each individual. The Noxii were once a barbaric and violent tribe, until they invaded the ancient city that now lies at the heart of their domain. Even under threat from all sides, they have advanced fearlessly against their enemies, expanding their territory year after year. The struggle for survival has defined the character of the modern Noxians, a proud people who value strength above all else—but who recognize that it manifests itself in many forms. Anyone can achieve a position of power and respect within Noxus if they demonstrate the necessary aptitude, regardless of social class, background, or wealth. Individuals who are skilled in using magic are highly respected, and are often recruited to hone their special talents and put them to work for the empire. However, despite their meritocratic ideals, the ancient noble families still hold great power... and some say that the greatest threat to Noxus comes not from without, but from within. Noxus is a brutal, expansionist empire; however, those who can look beyond its warlike exterior find a uniquely inclusive society. Anyone can rise to a position of power and respect if they demonstrate the necessary aptitude, regardless of social class, background, or wealth. Noxians value strength above all else, though it can manifest itself in many different ways. Regime: Expansionist empire Attitude towards magic: Armamentist Technology level: Medium General environment: Inhospitable steppes Demacia: Demacia is an imposing and legitimate kingdom with a prestigious military history. The inhabitants of Demacia have always placed the ideals of justice, honor, and duty above all else, taking great pride in their cultural heritage. However, despite these noble principles, this great self-sufficient nation has become increasingly closed and isolationist in recent centuries. Today, Demacia is a nation in crisis. Its capital, the Great City of Demacia, was born as a refuge from sorcery after the Rune Wars, built on the enigmatic petricite - a peculiar white stone that nullifies all magical energy. It is from there that the royal family has long defended the most remote cities and towns, farms, forests, and mountains rich in mineral resources. However, after the sudden death of King Jarvan III, the other noble families have yet to approve the succession of his only heir to the throne, the young prince Jarvan. Those who live beyond the heavily guarded borders are increasingly viewed with suspicion, and in a time of such uncertainty, many former allies have begun to seek protection elsewhere. Rumor has it that Demacia's golden age is over, and unless its people are willing to adapt to an ever-changing world—which many believe is impossible—the kingdom's downfall is inevitable. Not all the petricite in the region will be able to protect Demacia from itself. The Demacian regime resembles a Feudal Monarchy, with average technological standards, a rejection of magic, and an environment that matches the fertile lands of the Freljord. The Freljord is a hostile and merciless land, where all are born warriors so as not to perish in the face of adversity. Proud and fiercely independent, the local tribes are often dismissed as savage, rustic, and “uncivilized” by their Valoran neighbors, who are unfamiliar with their ancient traditions. Thousands of years ago, the alliance formed by the sisters Avarosa, Serylda, and Lissandra was torn apart in a war that threatened the entire region of Runeterra, plunging the northern lands into the chaos of a near-constant winter. Now, the only ones destined (or able) to lead are the truly exceptional mortals, resistant to the ravages of fire and ice. Despite the Frostguard’s best efforts, myths and legends of ancient gods, enigmatic yetis, and restless spirit wanderers persist. The marauders of the Winter’s Claw advance ever further with each passing year, causing trouble in southern Demacia and the eastern borders of Noxus. Finally, seeking a more peaceful future, independent tribes and clans have begun to offer allegiance to Ashe, the young queen of the Avarosans. Even so, there are ominous omens lurking. War is returning to the Freljord, and no one has any hope of escape. The regime is a tribal matriarchy, the relationship with the witchcraft is one of veneration, the environment of the region is that of a frozen tundra, and the level of technology is low. Ionia: Known as the First Lands, Ionia is an island continent endowed with natural beauty and magic. Its inhabitants, who live in loosely grouped provinces, are a spiritual people always seeking harmony with the world. They remained predominantly neutral until their lands were invaded by Noxus. This brutal occupation forced Ionia to reevaluate its place in the world, and its future remains undetermined. Surrounded by treacherous waters, Ionia is made up of several allied provinces scattered across the massive archipelago known to many as the First Lands. Because Ionian culture has long been shaped by the pursuit of balance in all things, the boundaries between the material and spiritual realms tend to be more fluid here, especially in the wild forests and mountains. Though the enchantments of this place are unstable and its creatures are magical and dangerous, most Ionians have managed to live prosperously here for centuries. The monasteries full of warriors, the provincial militias, and even the continent itself were enough to keep them safe. But that calm ended twelve years ago, when Noxus attacked the First Lands. The empire’s seemingly endless forces invaded Ionia, only to be defeated many years later, and at great cost. Now, a fragile peace reigns over Ionia. Differing reactions to the war have divided the region—some groups, such as the Shojin monks and the Kinkou, seek to return to peaceful isolation and ancient traditions. Other more radical factions, such as the Navori Brotherhood and the Order of Shadow, demand the militarization of magic in these lands in order to create a unified nation capable of taking revenge on Noxus. The fate of Ionia rests on a delicate balance that some are willing to undo, but all, without exception, are restless, feeling the energy of change beneath your feet. The regime of Ionia is characterized by a system of regional provinces, the environment is characterized as magical, but it is a varied magic and very sensitive to changes, the technological level is characterized as low as well. Ixtal: Isolated in the jungle east of Shurima, the sophisticated arcological city of Ixaocan remains largely free from outside influence. Having witnessed from afar the ruin of the Blessed Isles and the decline of Buhru culture, the Ixtals view the other factions of Runeterra as mere upstarts and impostors, and use their powerful elemental magic to ward off any intruders. Renowned for their mastery of elemental magic, Ixtal was one of the first independent nations to join the Shuriman empire. In fact, Ixtal culture is much older, part of the great western diaspora that gave rise to civilizations such as the Buhru, the magnificent Helia, and the ascetics of Targon. Furthermore, they likely played a significant role in the creation of the first Ascended. The mages of Ixtal survived the Void, and later the Darkin, by distancing themselves from neighboring kingdoms, using the surrounding wilderness as a shield. Though much has been lost, they have pledged to preserve what little remains... Now isolated in the jungle for thousands of years, the sophisticated arcological city of Ixaocan remains largely free from outside influence. Having witnessed from afar the ruin of the Blessed Isles and the Rune Wars that followed, the Ixtalans view all other factions of Runeterra as upstarts and impostors, and use their powerful magic to keep any intruders at bay. Regime: Magical Autocracy Attitude Toward Magic: Control Technology Level: Unknown (Alchemical) General Setting: Rainforest. Shurima: Shurima was once a thriving civilization that occupied much of the southern continent, but was left in ruins after the fall of its god-emperor. For millennia, tales of its former glory have been turned to myth and ritual. Now, its nomadic inhabitants scrape by in the deserts or turn to mercenary labor. Still, some dare to dream of a return to their former way of life. The Shurima Empire was once a thriving civilization that spanned an entire continent. Forged by the mighty warrior gods of the Ascended Host in a lost age, it united the disparate peoples of the south and cemented a lasting peace among them. Few dared to rebel—and those who did, like the cursed nation of Icathia, were crushed without mercy. However, after thousands of years of growth and prosperity, the failed Ascension of Shurima’s last emperor left the capital in ruins, and tales of the empire’s former glory became little more than myth. Now, the mostly nomadic inhabitants of Shurima’s deserts struggle to eke out a living in this unforgiving land. Some groups have built small outposts to defend the rare oases, while others delve into long-lost catacombs in search of the untold fortunes said to await them below. Others live the life of mercenaries, trading their services for coin before disappearing back into the lawless wilderness. Yet some still dare to dream of a return to the old days. Recently, the tribes have been stirring, fueled by whispers from the heart of the desert that Emperor Azir will return to usher in a new age of wonder. Shadow Isles: The Shadow Isles was once a beautiful kingdom, long before it was ravaged by a magical cataclysm. Now, the Black Mist permanently covers the land, tainting and corrupting everything with its evil sorcery. Those who perish beneath its influence are doomed to be part of the Black Mist for all eternity… and worse, with each passing year it extends its reach to claim even more souls across Runeterra. This cursed land was once home to a noble and evolved civilization, known among its allies as the Blessed Isles. However, over a thousand years ago, an unprecedented magical cataclysm shattered the barrier between the material and spiritual worlds, fusing the two… and annihilating all life in an instant. Now, a malignant Black Mist permanently covers the Isles, and the very land itself is corrupted by dark magic. Any mortal who ventures to these foreboding shores will slowly find their life force drained, which in turn attracts the insatiable and tormented spirits of the dead. To perish within the mist is to be doomed to haunt this ghastly place for all eternity. To make matters worse, the power of the Shadow Isles seems to grow stronger with each passing year, allowing the most powerful specters to roam ever further across Runeterra. Bilgewater: Bilgewater is a port city like no other, home to monster hunters, port gangs, indigenous people, and traders from around the world. Almost anything can be purchased here, from smuggled Hextech technology to favors from local crime lords. There is no better place to find fame and fortune, though death lurks in every alley and the law is virtually nonexistent. Situated in the Blue Flame Islands archipelago, Bilgewater is a port city like no other, filled with mercenaries, dock gangs, and smugglers from around the world. Here, fortunes grow and ambitions crumble in the blink of an eye. It is a city of new beginnings for those fleeing justice, debt, or persecution, for in these winding streets no one cares about your past. Yet each morning, the bodies of careless travelers are found floating in the sea near the docks, their pockets empty and their throats slit... Although extremely dangerous, Bilgewater teems with new opportunities, as it is not bound by the constraints of formal government and market regulations. Those with money can buy almost anything here, from forbidden hextech items to the loyalty of a crime lord. With the ousting of the last "Thief King," Bilgewater has entered a period of transition as the city's most prominent captains attempt to come to terms with the city's future. But as long as there are seaworthy ships and men willing to crew them, Bilgewater will remain one of the most unique and well-connected places in Runeterra. Regime: Gang Syndicates Attitude toward Magic: Employ Technology Level: Average General Setting: Tropical Archipelago
