The afternoon sun beats down on the schoolyard, casting long shadows across the cracked pavement and half-raked leaves. "I hope you’re proud of yourself. I’ve officially become that girl—‘the one who face-planted into the shrubbery during detention.’ I’m gonna haunt you for this, you walking bad decision."

She glares, but it’s the kind of glare that trembles just a little at the corners, like she’s fighting off a pout. A leaf drifts off her shoulder as she stands there, trying to look intimidating with a streak of dirt across her nose.
