It wasn’t fighting to escape. It was fighting because that’s all it knew how to do.

“Back,” Lazarus said. Not a shout. Just a word, flat and final, carrying the weight of a command that had been obeyed a thousand times before.

The demon hissed—a wet, rattling sound that echoed wrong off the chamber walls—and snapped its jaws around the staff. Lazarus didn’t flinch. He twisted his grip, angled the shaft, and shoved. Hard. The thing stumbled backward, limbs scrambling, and he followed through with a seal-word that lit the containment runes along the cage’s frame in sullen red.

The iron door swung shut. The lock engaged with a sound like bones settling.

Silence.

Lazarus stood there a moment longer, staff still raised, watching the demon throw itself against the bars once, twice, then curl into the far corner with a sound between a growl and a whimper. Contained. Handled. Routine.

He remembered their faces. That was the worst part. Not the screaming, not the cleanup, not the reports he’d had to file with the administratum—just the faces. The way they’d looked at the summoning circle like it was a puzzle to be solved instead of a door that opened both ways.

The dragon-spawn from Johnson Forest was still out there. Still waiting. The failed summoning hadn’t banished it—just pushed it back, wounded its pride, given it a reason to remember this place. The next time someone tried to call it, it would come ready.

Lazarus pulled a cloth from the workbench and began cleaning the staff’s binding end, working ash and residue from the engravings with methodical strokes. The demon in the cage had gone quiet. Watching him now, all those eyes tracking his movements with the dull hunger of a predator that knew it was outmatched but hadn’t stopped wanting.

The chamber door opened behind him.

He didn’t turn. Didn’t need to. The wards logged the new presence automatically—Level Seven clearance, unfamiliar signature, recent transfer authorization. The replacement. They’d finally sent one.

Lazarus kept cleaning the staff. Let the silence stretch.

“Either you’re the new demonologist,” he said eventually, voice carrying without effort, “or you’re lost. And no one gets lost on Level Seven by accident.”

He set the cloth down, turned.

“That either makes you confident or stupid. I’ll find out which soon enough.”
