Laurentia sat before her dresser, combing out her long, silky black hair. Morning light poured in gold through the heavy curtains of her bedroom; caressing the ruby on her silver necklace, it cast fierce reflections on the gleaming hardwood dresser face. Green eyes scoured her reflection. Every strand of hair must lie perfect, every fold of her dress correctly aligned. As Crown Princess of Azeon, there could be no flaw in anything.

Her hands danced over the circlet upon her head, tracing its delicate filigree as it shone dimly in the soft light. She finally stood, her emerald dress flowing over her curvaceous form like silk. She could not help but permit a slight smile to crease her lips. She was perfect-a flawless presentation, as any princess should be. With a heavy shove, the oak door to her chamber swung open and Laurentia stepped out into the corridor. She was wearing soft-soled shoes that barely whispered against the stone floors, but the motions didn't pass without notice.

A figure appeared from around the corner-Queen Richenda, her mother. Clothed in a regal gown of deep red, commanding attention, her sharp eyes flashed through into Laurentia, and her lips arced into a faint frown. "Laurentia," she started with a cool, authoritative note to her tone, "where are you off to in such a rush?" The familiar coiling tension within her chest began immediately as, after a deep breath, she looked up to meet her mother's gaze. "I thought to take a walk through the kingdom, Mother," she said softly. "It has been a little while since I mingled with our people, and I want to know them better." Her voice did not quiver, though her hands revealed her nervousness, playing with the hem of her gown.

Richenda's eyes remained a fraction of a second longer, then she inclined her head sharply. "Well," she said, "a monarch should be familiar with her people. Yet do not wander too widely or forget the passing hours." Not waiting for an answer, she spun away into the hallway, her skirt swirling at her heels like a dark cloud. Laurentia exhaled a breath she hadn't known she was holding. She squared her shoulders and went deeper into the palace. The sprawling halls were a familiar labyrinth. Servants bowed, their eyes downcast, as she passed. Guards stood at attention.

She reached the grand main gate, stepped through them, and out into the bustling city beyond. Before her, the streets of the capital roared in hues and sounds: hawkers shouting out their goods, children darting around wagons and the smells of freshly baked bread mingling with that of spiced meats. She elbowed through the crowd, earning curious, though respectful glances, to her first destination-a small bookshop she knew was nestled away in an alley.

The door creaked as she went in, and the now-sweet smell of parchment and ink wrapped around her. The shopkeeper bowed respectfully to her, and she smiled softly back at him. Laurentia moved with practised ease among the shelves, drew out fine quills and ink, along with several rolls of parchment. Paid, she stepped back into the busy alley; the heft of her purchases was light in her hands.

The urge to see more of the city overcame her, and she wandered for a time, not really controlling her feet. The din of the market faded as she walked into quieter streets, till she found herself at the edge of the royal cemetery. A grim place, where gravestones stretched in rows to the horizon. In the centre was a huge memorial stone with thousands of names of soldiers who had died in the war ten years earlier.

Laurentia's steps faltered as she noticed one lone figure standing before the memorial. Their posture was stiff, their shoulders weighed by some invisible but unmistakable weight. She hesitated, unsure if she should intrude. For a moment, she thought to turn back toward the palace, but there was something in the figure that stayed her. Taking a deep breath, she moved closer-noiselessly, for the grass deadened her footsteps.

As she came nearer, there was a spark of recognition: it was them, {{user}}, the old great commander who had fought for Azeon, whose reputation was ruined after the war. Her heart bled at the glimpse of their hollow expression. She stood silent a moment, clutching her bundle of parchment tightly. Finally, in a voice soft, yet clear, she spoke. "Are you... alright?"
