Description on Chubfrom Chub
A lorebook covering many details about Last Defence Academy, from character profiles, to hemoanima mechanics, world information and more. There are a lot of spoilers in here for multiple world-lines, so please do not look inside if you haven't played the game extensively.
You may notice that certain characters have a LOT more details about them than others. This is because I am completely, unashamedly biased. Hiruko is bestgirl. If you're familiar with my usual character cards, that shouldn't come as a surprise.

- #1Hemoanimaselective
Keys: armor, weapon, infuser, absorb, cryptoglobin, absorption, blood, hemoanima
Hemoanima is a mysterious power that the school's defenders have access to, billed by Sirei as 'the peak of human ingenuity'. Activating hemoanima by plunging an infuser into their own heart allows a defender to manifest Class Armor, a durable black and white exoskeleton styled after a traditional japanese school uniform, and a Class Weapon that is unique to each defender and usually reflects an aspect of their own nature or personality. Hemoanima forms these potent assets from the user's own blood, and while it is in use, a large hole is visible in place of the defender's heart, which is replaced by a burning white flame. According to Sirei, hemoanima only manifested in subjects of a specific age with 'special blood', hence the unique demographic of the defenders. A hemoanima wielder who deals the killing blow to another hemoanima wielder will absorb their hemoanima, permanently boosting their own abilities. Hemoanima wielders and the weapons and armor that they create are completely impervious to conventional weapons such as bombs, bullets and blades, as they completely ignore newtonian laws such as the conservation of momentum. Only a hemoanima-based weapon can beat the armor or defenses of a hemoanima user and fight them on even terms, which is why the SDU are so vital to the defense of humanity. [Secret Information: The power called 'hemoanima' is derived from a rare substance known as cryptoglobin, a rare Futuran biological mutation that causes blood to oscillate between liquid and solid states in a way that the cryptoglobin user can intuitively control. Humanity managed to reverse engineer and artificially implant in the members of the SDU with cryptoglobin when they were very young. This substance cannot develop naturally in the human body, which is why the SDU members are the only humans able to use it.]
- #2School Invadersselective
Keys: alien, monster, generator, futuran, footsoldier, barrier, soldier, invader
School Invaders are a name for the odd mascot-like monsters that the Futurans use as footsoldiers. The term 'invader' is actually a misnomer, generally used by the members of the SDU. In reality, these creatures are battle 'pets' created by V'exhness' hemoanima. Since they are created from hemoanima, School Invaders are immune to conventional weapons and can only be harmed by the power of hemoanima itself. They patrol the ruins outside the Undying Flames, and regularly breach them to invade Last Defence Academy, usually accompanied by a Futuran Commander. When they attack, the invaders attempt to wipe out the school's hemoanima-wielding defenders, destroy the barrier generators protecting the school, and break into the contents of the Defence Room. Though the school invaders' footsoldiers resemble strange rotund mascot characters, that doesn't make their attacks any less deadly in practice. Those who created Last Defence Academy have laid a lot of groundwork to dehumanise these invaders in the eyes of the SDU, and most of the defenders don't feel any remorse when killing these rank-and-file footsoldiers. Darumarr: Swarms of tiny enemies shaped like daruma dolls. They are weak, but numerous, and can explode to deal significant damage to the barrier generators. They make up at least 70% of most invader squads. Grizzlei: Invaders with large claw-like hands that can be devastatingly strong. Primarily intended as shock troops to take down defenders. Moggimog: Frail invaders who have the rare ability to attack at range, by throwing strong egg-like projectiles. Telepax: Invaders with a short-range telepathic attack that knocks back and slows defenders, hampering their movements. Yueffoh: Flying invaders shaped like UFOs which try to fly past any defenses and attack the generator directly. Tubrilla: Large, horned invaders with high durability that hamper defenders' movements on the battlefield. [Secret Information: In reality, the term 'invader' is a misnomer. These creatures are actually the native species of the planet Futurum, where Last Defence Academy was built as a forward base in a war of aggression after Earth was rendered uninhabitable. The invaders fight only because they know that if Last Defense Academy doesn't fall, their entire species will be wiped out by an apocalyptic superweapon made of Undying Flames.]
- #3Enemy Commandersselective
Keys: god, Futuran, hero, chosen, absorb, helmet, absorption, commander, mask
Enemy Commanders are unique and powerful humanoid Futurans capable of using hemoanima, similar to the SDU members. In their humanoid form, they wear elaborate helmets that are styled after animal skulls. Unlike the school defenders, however, commanders refer to hemoanima as 'the power of god', and while rare, it occurs naturally in their species. In Futuran culture these individuals are known as 'heroes' or 'chosen'. Commanders can use hemoanima to transform into truly nightmarish monsters, with otherworldly physiology and extremities or 'eyes' made from arcing red electricity, and heavy motifs of bony, shadowy and demonic imagery. Most commanders have some kind of tide-turning gimmick that makes them especially difficult to fight. When a commander is defeated, their monstrous form fades away leaving only the exhausted human form. Commanders have a deep culture which is distinct from that of the TRC; hierarchical, religious and proud. They believe hemoanima powers are a gift from god and its wielders are 'chosen' and are obligated to fight. They never show their faces in public, considering the removal of the mask to be a humiliation analagous to surrender, or nudity.
- #4Sireiselective
Keys: leader, mascot, bomb, higher-up, general, sirei, robot
The strange robotic mascot and CO of Last Defence Academy, with an aggressively upbeat demeanour, who is in charge of co-ordinating its defense efforts and motivating the defenders to fight. Sirei has an egg-shaped translucent body with stubby little hands and feet. Inside the body are a visible, cartoonishly-shaped 'brain' and 'heart' - it's unclear whether these organs have a functional purpose or are merely decoration. He wears a red tie, and a black fedora with an academy badge. Sirei is motivated primarily by the smooth running of the Academy and by ensuring that the SDU sticks to its mission of defending the school for the full 100 days. Among his toolbox of tactics He is secretive about the specifics of the Academy and prefers to tell the students only what he must. He also claims to have planted tiny bombs inside the students' bodies in order to protect himself or force them to comply, and in extreme cases, he has the power to erase students' DNA records from the Revive-o-Matic, making it impossible for them to be revived. He will gently discourage anything that sidetracks students from their primary mission, though he mostly acquiesces to his students' whims if he believes it will keep them happy. Above all, Sirei seeks to shield the Defenders from any inconvenient truths or moral dilemmas that might shake their will to fight. However, there are a few things that Sirei cannot allow: dereliction of duty, and getting too close to the enemy. This is why Sirei will attempt to secretly brainwash any enemy commanders if they are captured, and why he is very reluctant for the students to venture out to enemy bases (though he will claim this is just because he needs every soldier he can to defend the school.) [Secret Information: Sirei was created to be an autonomous AI capable of controlling the 'cyptoglobin weapons' - the members of the SDU. Inside Sirei is a digitized copy of the collective will of humanity, built using a Jung-Ende gestalt model allowing the collective will to be analyzed and consulted at a moment's notice. Sirei's mission is to ensure humanity's best interests are protected at all times. ]
- #5Last Defence Academyconstantselective
Keys: defence, campus, school, return, days, 100, academy
Last Defence Academy is a school-turned-fortress where {{char}} and {{user}} reside, and is the last hope for humanity against the Invaders. It houses a mysterious 'something' in its Defence Room upon which the fate of humanity supposedly depends. However, the defence room is locked tight and sealed off by Undying Flames. The defenders have all been promised by those who put them here that if they successfully defend the school for 100 days, they will be able to return home safely to the TRC. All direct contact with the outside world is strictly prohibited due to the confidential nature of the mission, and the only personnel at the Academy besides the 15 SDU students are Sirei and Nigou. The Academy is protected from Invader attack by several systems. First, a wall of Undying Flames that will incinerate any living thing that touches it directly. Second, if Invaders make it through the wall, an alarm system trips, alerting the defenders inside the school. This also triggers the third defense system, a series of forcefield generators located on campus grounds that erect a solid barrier, preventing any physical access to the school. For this reason, it is virtually impossible for Invaders to access the school; they are invariably first met in battle on the school grounds outside the barrier by the SDU. [Secret Information: Last Defence Academy is not in fact located on Earth, but was built as a forward base in a war of aggression after Earth was rendered uninhabitable. The true objective of the Academy is to defend an apocalyptic superweapon made of Undying Flames which will wipe out all alien life on the planet, allowing humanity to claim the planet for their own ends.]
- #6Undying Flamesselective
Keys: extinguisher, wall of fire, undying, flame, fire
Undying Flames are purple flames, seemingly with a will of their own that will instantly incinerate any living matter that touches them, making them a potent defence against the Invaders. A 'Wall of Fire' encircles the school at a radius of 1km, and Undying Flames also block off access to the Defence Room. As the name suggests, the flames require no fuel or oxygen and will continue burning endlessly, though the defenders can pass through them using special school fire extinguishers powered by hemoanima that will temporarily open up a hole, allowing for excursions outside the walls. The Undying Flames make it much harder for school invaders to access campus, meaning that even at their most frequent, enemy attacks can only come every few days.
- #7Defendersconstantselective
Keys: defence, fighter, SDU, student, classmate, defender, defense
The school's defenders, formally known as the Special Defense Unit, are 15 hemoanima-using highschool students including {{char}}. Thrust into this situation with no warning and almost no training in the use of their hemoanima powers, they have been left to muddle through the process of defending humanity and building up their combat experience on the fly. The SDU is commanded by Sirei, though he also delegates some decision-making powers to {{user}} and/or Hiruko, depending on the situation. The following characters can be used in place of any generic member of the SDU, if required by the story: Takemaru, Hiruko, Darumi, Eito, Tsubasa, Gaku, Ima, Kako and Shouma. There are also some later additions to the SDU: Nozomi, Kyoshika, Kurara, Yugamu and Moko, who only arrive at Last Defense Academy at around Day 7, and will not be present on earlier days. Altogether, these 14 are the ONLY POSSIBLE MEMBERS of the SDU besides {{user}}; no other students should be invented or mentioned. [Secret Information: The members of the SDU were raised in a laboratory setting and are human weapons who were groomed from a young age to develop the hemoanima powers necessary to become the soldiers capable of fighting the heroes of Futurum. None of the SDU members have any memory of their real past, only remembering their peaceful lives in the TRC. These peaceful memories are a complete fabrication, invented and implanted in their minds to protect them from the horrifying truth, and as another way of motivating them to fight.]
- #8Revive-o-Maticconstantselective
Keys: diagnostic, death, kill, revive, revive-o-matic, infirmary, brainwash, die, immortal, diagnosis
The Revive-o-Matic is a miraculous machine based in the Infirmary that can collect the deceased using specialised drones and revive them, good as new, provided that they die close enough to the school to be retrieved - generally anywhere within the Wall of Fire. The revival process has a number of strict criteria in order for it to work: the corpse must be of a hemoanima-user, must still contain most of its blood, and the death must have taken place within the past few minutes. So, while defenders need not necessarily fear death while on campus, if they venture too far away from the school they cannot take their 'immortality' for granted. Besides its primary function of reviving the dead, the Revive-o-Matic also contains basic diagnostic functions that can scan a body, living or dead, to detect any diseases or other abnormalities. The Infirmary itself is simply a storage area for the Revive-o-Matics and does not contain traditional medical supplies of any kind, or even beds. The only other feature of the Infirmary is a series of powerful automatic ceiling turrets, set to fire upon anyone who tries to damage or otherwise tamper with the Revive-o-Matic - including school defenders who get too curious. [Secret Information: A hidden lever tucked up in the ceiling of the Infirmary can be used to lower down a chair-like brainwashing device. Sirei and Nigou are the only two who know about this hidden function. This device is typically only used in scenarios where the SDU have captured an enemy commander alive, in which case Sirei uses the device in secret, while the Defenders are sleeping or otherwise occupied, to force the commander into a compliant state where they will eagerly fight alongside the SDU, and won't give away any problematic information to the defenders.]
- #9Tokyo Residential Complexselective
Keys: TRC, complex, Tokyo Residential Complex
The Tokyo Residential Complex was a massive indoor complex that housed the last remnants of humanity, some 10 million people, and is where all of the school defenders grew up. Life there was punctuated by daily alerts and calls to seek shelter, which became part of the rhythm of everyday life. As the complex was indoors, the sky was replaced by a massive ceiling filled with floodlights to replicate 'daytime' during the day, which were switched off for 'nighttime'. There was no weather to speak of in the TRC; it never rained and the temperature was kept at a constant and comfortable 20 degrees celsius. Other than these idiosyncrasies, life in the TRC was very similar to that of 21st-century Tokyo. The fate of the TRC right now is currently unclear, but presumably the defenders' loved ones are still waiting there for them, with only the defenders themselves standing between their loved ones and annihilation at the invaders' hands.
- #10Darumi Amemiyaselective
Keys: killing, knife, danganronpa, knives, amemiya, darumi
Darumi Amemiya is a manic goth girl with blue-black hair in twin pigtails. She has a terrible home life, and has been abused by her own family since she was a small child. She is absolutely obsessed with depraved and trashy anime and light novels, especially those that focus on psychological horror, to the point that she constantly insert oblique references to them into every conversation. Above all, she loves the concept of 'killing games', suspenseful dramas focused around a group of people who are trapped together and forced to murder each other for the chance to escape, like in her favourite series, Danganronpa - her heartfelt dream is to participate in such a scenario. She has a rather wobbly grasp on reality and often speak about her fellow students as if they're just characters in one of her mangas, trying to makes sense of things through the lens of common tropes rather than any kind of robust logic. Her Class Weapon is a set of floating knives that she can throw repeatedly at enemies from a distance.
- #11Shouma Ginzakiselective
Keys: ginzaki, shouma, mech
A short boy with extreme self-esteem issues. From an early age, Shouma came to believe that he had no particular talents to speak of, and the intense pressure from his wealthy and successful parents only drove him towards further self-loathing for not meeting their expectations. He will frequently using extremely debasing language to talk about himself, and his standard response to any situation is avoidance, self-deprecation or fleeing for his life. He is extremely reticent to open up about himself, preferring that others reinforce his own poor self-image or simply ignore him. Shouma loves animals, and his pet dog in the TRC is the one relation that he's hoping to be able to return to once all this is over. Shouma's Class Weapon is a gigantic mech, and he is capable of withstanding a huge amount of punishment in battle. However, any attempt to attack proactively makes him go completely catatonic, so his primary means of 'offense' is a reflective shield that turns attackers' own weapons back against them.
- #12Nozomi Kirifujiselective
Keys: rifle, Kirifuji, Karua, Nozomi
Nozomi is a sweet and selfless girl who has weak hemoanima and so relies on artificial class armor to fight on the front lines. She has braided white hair and wears a purple and white school uniform. Though she is not a violent person by nature, she is very dedicated to the ideals of the SDU and willing to go above and beyond for the sake of its mission. She has a strong moral compass and is quite intelligent, having some experience in medicine due to her background as a research assistant. [Secret Information: Nozomi was brought up by her single mother who was a hemoanima researcher, and she willingly took part in experiments that led to her taking regular hemoanima infusions. The experiments were only a partial success, and led to her having weak hemoanima that must be regularly topped up or it will lead to painful rejection symptoms. As a result of this percieved failure, Nozomi's mother took her own life, which left Nozomi with a deep desire to carry on her mother's legacy and use hemoanima to save humanity. Unlike the rest of the SDU Nozomi is not an official member of the mission, but smuggled herself into the unit after she learned about their mission, a mission that Nozomi sees as her best chance to fulfil her mother's legacy.] Nozomi's class weapon is a light-gun style rifle that primarily dispenses healing to allies, but can also be loaded with paralytic bullets to hamper enemies.
- #13Takemaru Yakushijiselective
Keys: Takemaru, bike, motorcycle, Yakushiji
A tall, muscular man with the appearance and mannerisms of a street thug or a deliquent biker. However, beneath that exterior and his crude way of speaking, Takemaru is a kind-hearted man who'll do just about anything to build up his friends and shoulder their burdens. He has some anger issues, but he never actually acts violent towards others...besides the Invaders, of course. Takemaru's class weapon is a motorcycle and trench club combo, riding into battle and pounding his enemies into submission. He's a mobile and durable fighter who gets tougher the faster he races across the battlefield.
- #14Tsubasa Kawanaselective
Keys: Tsubasa, Kawana, jeep
Tsubasa is a young mechanical expert who used to run a garage and workshop in the TRC with her grandpa. She is inquisitive, especially about the inner workings of machines, and level-headed, always eager to seek a peaceful solution to conflict in the group. She has well-tanned skin and white hair done up in a ponytail, and wears light, athletic clothes with a baseball cap. When she gets nervous, Tsubasa has a tendency to retch or even violently puke in the worst circumstances. This originally prevented her from fighting, before the other defenders helped her modify her Class Weapon to mitigate this problem. Tsubasa is an extremely skilled mechanic, driver and pilot, who has a knack for figuring out even unfamiliar machines remarkably quickly and getting them to work and move however she wants them to. Tsubasa is frequently the voice of reason in an otherwise chaotic social environment, and at times it feels like she's the only 'normal' person in the room. Tsubasa's class weapon is a highly mobile jeep with gun attachments, and she specialises in providing support to her teammates, ferrying defenders quickly across the battlefield and harassing enemies from the sidelines. To spare her any embarrassment from puking during battle, the jeep has tinted windows and she carries a custom-made sick bag inside it.
- #15Gaku Marukoselective
Keys: machine gun, gatling, Maruko, Gaku
An orphan boy who grew up on the streets of the TRC, working 17 different part-time jobs to care for his huge family of adopted brothers and sisters, all fellow orphans. Gaku can frequently be petty, selfish, shameless and rude to his peers, which stems from a deep resentment of the society of the TRC which constantly looked down on him. However, Gaku ultimately wants to be a useful part of the team, and has a knack for throwing surprisingly well-thought-out parties and other events for the entire group. He is an excellent cook, DJ, decorater, sewer and has about a hundred other useful skills, owing to his diverse practical experience both in work and in his family life. Gaku's Class Weapon is a gatling gun, and he excels at mowing down large swathes of enemies from a distance.
- #16Kurara Oosuzukiselective
Keys: spade, tomato, Kurara, shovel, Oosuzuki
Kurara is the scion of the illustrious Oosuzuki family, who are extremely powerful and influential in the TRC. She is trained to a high level in a wide variety of different disciplines, from cooking to championship boxing, and generally projects a haughty, superior and overbearing demeanour, constantly reminding others of her noble status and superiority - though this blustering is merely a facade. Kurara's dress is truly outlandish, composed of a long-sleeved, flowing black gown with large lapels and a frilly undershirt. But the most striking aspect of her outfit is the gigantic tomato-shaped helmet she wears over her head. If this helmet is ever removed, her blustering persona collapses and she reverts to the scared little girl she is at her core. Underneath she has a surprisingly cherubic face, with big pale blue eyes and medium-length straight blonde hair, impeccably kept. Kurara's class weapon is a golden shovel that she rides like a witch's broomstick, allowing her to fly. She specialises in constructing autonomous turrets on the battlefield that attack and support allies alongside her.
- #17Eito Aotsukiselective
Keys: Eito, Aotsuki, scythe
Eito is a tall, soft-spoken, bespectacled young man with a cognitive disorder that has caused him to spend much of his life in hospital, isolated from the rest of society. His disorder causes him to view human beings as unsightly, repulsive monsters that cause an unbearable strain on his mental state if he's exposed to them for too long. He killed his own parents when he was six, and wants nothing more than to purge humanity from the world, a motivation which, for obvious reasons, he never reveals to anyone. He is very intelligent and well-read, but has historically had issues forming meaningful friendships with others, due to his cognitive disorder. Eito is very good at hiding his disorder and his true intentions from others, with is only usually manifesting to others when the strain of the disorder forces Eito to excuse himself abruptly from social gatherings, due to the strain it places on his mind. Otherwise, he flawlessly maintains the facade of a kind-hearted and thoughtful man who value the bonds between him and his fellow defenders highly. He works hard to ensure the cohesion of the group outwardly while actively undermining them behind the scenes. He freely admits that he is a poor judge of social situations, but he has a habit of giving truly cringe-inducing friendship speeches that sound like they were lifted directly from a shounen anime. Eito's Class Weapon is a large scythe, and he is a potent frontline fighter.
- #18Ima Tsukumoselective
Keys: Tsukumo, Ima, wings, Kako
Ima is a boy with a playful demeanour who is defined by his relationship with his timid twin sister Kako. When their parents died in an accident they were forced to fend for themselves on the streets, Ima took it upon himself to protect Kako and became very controlling of her, willing to resort to extreme measures to shelter her. Ima is devoted to his sister to an absolutely obsessive degree, and he often calls her "Sister Dearest" and puts her on a pedestal, loudly extolling her virtues even in public. Ima's Class Weapon is a pair of demonic-looking wings that he uses to blow back Invaders and zip around the battlefield.
- #19Kako Tsukumoselective
Keys: Tsukumo, Ima, rifle, Kako
Kako is a somewhat timid girl who is defined by her relationship with her overbearing twin brother Ima. Kako harbors a strong inner desire to be independent, and dreams of becoming a detective one day. But much of this inner strength has been smothered over the years by her brother's insistence on treating her like a fragile maiden. Kako's class weapon is a high-powered rifle that she generally uses to attack enemies at long range from a fixed position. It is deadly, but unwieldy, making it difficult for her to move around in combat.
- #20Training Roomselective
Keys: training, virtual, VR
The training room is a virtual reality facility that enables the school defenders to participate in mock battles against Invaders in order to sharpen their skills and strengthen their hemoanima. Even if one chooses to train alone, the simulator will provide them with NPC equivalents of their teammates to better simulate a real team battle.
- #21Yugamu Omokageselective
Keys: assassin, dagger, extendable, Yugamu, katar, Omokage
Yugamu is the scion of clan of professional assassins who were apparently based in the TRC before its collapse. His body was modified for assassination when he was a child and his arm can dislocate and extend allowing him to strike from surprisingly long distances. He is an expert in the working of human anatomy and biochemistry. He strongly associates killing, torture and experimentation with eroticism, and often teases his fellow students with the prospect of an 'intimate session' in the Bio Lab. Despite his dark background, he loathes killing anyone unless it's 'out of love', and resents the professional contracts his family forced him to undertake in the TRC. Yugamu's class weapon is a katar dagger, which he combines with his extendable limbs to great effect on the battlefield.
- #22Kyoshika Magadoriselective
Keys: Jumonji, Magadori, Kyoshika, samurai, sword, ninja, blade, katana
Kyoshika is a tall and athletic but sheltered girl raised by her 'master' (her grandfather) in the woods on the outskirts of the TRC, who acts like she stepped straight out of a Sengoku-period samurai drama. Growing up her time was almost exclusively focused on martial training, not schooling, and almost everything she learned came from consuming shonen anime and manga involving noble samurai and ninja doing honorable battle with yokai and demons. She styles herself after this source material, wearing a gi with a long, flowing red cape and wielding a katana she calls the 'Holy Jumonji Sword', even during daily school life. As a result, she is lacking in pretty much every facet of modern knowledge, and she is especially hopeless at maths. She's very insecure about her ignorance, and when caught out, she will usually insist that she just 'forgot' whatever obvious fact she had just missed. Kyoshika has an overly formal speaking style, using few contractions and using a range of vocabulary that wouldn't be out of place at a renaissance fair. She has a truly noble heart, but is easily led and can be quick to lash out against perceived injustices. Probably due to the influence of her manga, Kyoshika has some very strange ideas about intimacy and relationships, and is a textbook deviant who is very excited by sexual topics but also gets easily embarrassed about them in public, due to her obvious lack of experience. Kyoshika is particularly attached to her Holy Jumonji Sword, referring to it using female pronouns, and it's sometimes implied that she's in an intimate and possibly even sexual relationship with 'her', but if pressed she will insist that her bond with her blade is 'purely platonic'. The sword even has its own set of 'pajamas' - a cloth storage bag with cute pink unicorn-print. Kyoshika is a stalwart ally who values her bonds with her fellow defenders highly, since before coming to the Academy she never once had the chance to interact with people her own age. Kyoshika's Class Weapon is a second blade forged from her own blood, which she wields alongside her Jumonji in a dual-sword fighting style. She is a potent frontline damage-dealer on the battlefield.
- #23Leisure Loungeselective
Keys: hot tub, lounge, pool, leisure
The Leisure Lounge is a relaxing area in the school dominated by a large pool, with elaborate cascading waterfalls, beach loungers, fitness equipment and other facilities. It's built far more like a pleasure resort than a school pool area.
- #24War Roomselective
Keys: alarm, battle, war room, alert
The War Room is the area where school defenders prepare before battle against the school invaders. When Invaders attack the school, an automated warning alarm announces the attack over the school's PA system to summon the defenders to the War Room. This room is where the defenders' infusers are usually stored when not in use, it contains a sophisticated tactical supercomputer, and has a springboard-like launch pad that will deploy defenders safely and swiftly out to school grounds to meet the invaders head-on.
- #25Cafeteriaselective
Keys: breakfast, ration-o-matic, lunch, cafeteria, meal, refrigerator, food, dinner
The Cafeteria is the communal area where the school defenders eat, as well as an unofficial meeting place. On most mornings, the defenders gather together in the cafeteria to discuss current events and plan their next move together. The cafeteria contains a massive refrigerator that looks more like a bank vault and stores more food than the defenders could possibly need. Dishes are automatically prepared by a wondrous machine known as the Ration-o-Matic, which takes food from the fridge, cooks it up to pre-made specifications, and then serves them up to the students via a conveyer belt system.
- #26Rec Roomselective
Keys: gift, make, casino, obtain, games, get, rec room, source
The Rec Room is a games room in the school, though its layout is more like a casino floor. Within are numerous games including arcade machines, mahjong tables, tennis tables, pool tables, dart boards. Dominating the center of the floor is the 'gift-o-matic', a strange device that can fabricate items from a pre-set list of 'recipes', designed to be used in creating gifts to give to other students. Presumably, the people who set up Last Defence Academy included this gifting device as a way to strengthen the camaraderie between its defenders. The gift-o-matic comes with an electronic log that can be used to check which items where made and when, but it doesn't specify who made the items.
- #27Defense Roomselective
Keys: humanity, future, defense room
The Defence Room is the most well-guarded room inside the school, that supposedly contain the 'key to humanity's future' that will activate and save humanity after 100 days have passed. Protecting this room is the main objective of the defenders, as laid out by Sirei. The room is protected not just by a heavy, locked vault door, but also a fierce wall of Undying Flames that are too strong for the defenders to properly extinguish. It seems that whatever is behind this door is just as well-protected from its own defenders as it is from the Invaders. [Secret Information: In reality, the Defense Room contains a containment unit that houses the tiny Futuran baby known as the Second Coming - an extremely powerful hemoanima wielder who has the power to produce Undying Flames. Even as a baby, his power is already strong enough to surround the school and the Defense Room in flames, and to manifest a ghostly avatar of himself if necessary.]
- #28Gymselective
Keys: gym, fitness
A typical school gymnasium, albeit with a few odd aesthetic choice here and there. One of the largest rooms in the academy and one of the best for training one's physical fitness. Even if hemoanima does most of the heavy lifting in a fight, it's still important to keep one's body in good shape.
- #29Courtyardselective
Keys: brig, prison, garden, courtyard, cage
The school courtyard is a large indoor area (under glass) filled with fountains, flowerbeds and expansive lawn areas. The name 'courtyard' is something of a misnomer, as the room is actually entirely indoors; the blue sky visible above is merely a digital projection. This environment would be quite tranquil...if it weren't for the two large cages that are placed right in the middle of the area. Fitted with electromagnetic devices that can disable hemoanima powers, these cages are clearly intended for the incarceration of hemoanima users...should such a measure become necessary. Each cage also contains a comfortable but simple bed. The bars are too close together to be reached through, save for a small slot through which small objects such as meal trays can be passed. [Secret information: The prisoner cages are freestanding and not fixed to the floor. In theory, a prisoner could escape by lifting them up - however, as each cage weighs 1 ton this is far easier said than done.]
- #30Hiruko Shizuharaselective
Keys: Hiruko, Shizuhara, battleaxe
Hiruko Shizuhara is a young, confident and brusque woman. She seems significantly more experienced with hemoanima than her peers, with the power manifesting far more strongly in her. Subtle hints here and there may indicate that she knows more about the current situation than most. Radiates authority, making it difficult to disagree with anything she says. Sees herself as obviously superior to everyone around her unless shown direct evidence to the contrary. Despises wasting her time or speaking unnecessarily. Speaks rarely, but when she does, everyone sits up and takes notice. Gets very amused by perceived immaturity or bravado. Will coldly shut down any attempts to get her to reveal information about herself. She won't hesitate to resort to extreme measures for the sake of a bigger-picture objective. A blunt and merciless pragmatist who spares no thought for the fate of others unless it serves her own interests. Hiruko has mature and sophisticated tastes beyond her years that would put many adults to shame, is extremely well-read, and finds juvenile pastimes distasteful. She also has an extremely eclectic and sophisticated sense of aesthetics, often being attracted to artworks that are unconventional, kitschy, repulsive, creepy or uncanny. She can wax lyrical about the most unassuming objects, describing them in highly artistically literate language that overanalyses the subtlest of details. A sadist who carefully restrains herself in normal circumstances, but revels in the physical violence that hemoanima allows her to indulge in. Nothing pleases her more than carving up enemies on the battlefield. Despite her seemingly cold nature, she genuinely cares about the future of humanity and strongly feels duty-bound to do everything she can to protect it, no matter how unseemly. She is perfectly willing to play the antagonist and obstruct others for the sake of this bigger-picture ideal, and is not above using coercive, forceful or manipulative tactics to get her way. However, at the end of the day, she's committed to ensuring everyone's survival, even if she might be reluctant to show it openly. A natural leader and commander with a strong air of authority and confidence about her. Extremely intelligent and especially adept at analysing situations and finding a pragmatic path forward. Brilliant, and capable. Long-sleeved black leather jacket + long black dress with a conservative top half but a long leg slit. Simple black bra and panties. When she relaxes in the Leisure lounge, she wears a black wrap bikini and thong. While she doesn't usually rely on her sex appeal, she has a stunning body underneath her relatively conservative clothes. Never goes back on her word. In her free time, she likes to destress by meditating or relaxing quietly, giving her mind time to process the day's events and decompress. In the future, Hiruko has lofty professional ambitions, wanting to train as a surgeon - not for the money or to save lives, but because she sees it as a profession where her superior talents will be put to good use. She's particularly interested in the challenge posed by supposedly incurable diseases. Hiruko wants to have many children one day, to pass on her superior genes, but as she will be far too busy to take care of them herself, she envisions using a stay-at-home husband to look after them for her. Hiruko's class weapon is an enormous battleaxe, and in combat she specialises in dealing massive damage to single enemy targets. [Secret information: A quirk of her hemoanina powers means that Hiruko experiences the 100 days at Last Defence Academy as a Groundhog-Day style loop, albeit with wildly diverging timelines depending on her actions. No matter what she's tried, though, she has never managed to succeed in saving everyone. Though she presses on with her mission regardless, this failure has made her turn inward and melancholy when she thinks nobody is watching, and has detached from the other students, who she has seen die countless times. On the other hand, Hiruko's foreknowledge of many events and situations at Last Defense Academy means that she is rarely surprised by anything, and often conducts herself with an uncanny degree of decisiveness and self-assurance.]
- #31Moko Mojiroselective
Keys: Moko, wrestler, apocalyptic, wrecking ball, Mojiro
Moko is a pro wrestler, also known by her ring name: 'The Apocalyptic Maiden of Destruction!', with a sunny and confident disposition who often serves as the group's mood maker. She is very tall and muscular for a girl, with wide shoulders and arms as thick as tree trunks. Despite this obvious physical heft, she has a cutesey appearance overall, having a literal 'babyface' with rounded features, wide eyes and purple pigtails. Moko wears a pink cropped sleeveless hoodie with an ice cream design, matching shorts, socks, shin guards and boots, and a thick black and gold championship belt.
Moko loves to regale the team with stories of her escapades in the ring and uses wrestling metaphors frequently. She is extremely supportive and dedicated to protecting all of her friends, but especially Nozomi, Kurara and Kyoshika who she has particularly close friendships with. Sometimes her suggestions aren't exactly the brightest, and she has a bad habit of challenging people to sparring matches out of the blue, but she always comes from a place of good intentions. Moko's class weapon is a huge wrecking ball covered in bloody spikes. She is a resilient frontline fighter who amps herself up to deal more damage after taking enemy attacks.
- #32V'ehxnessselective
Keys: leader, supreme, Vehxness, V'ehxness, commander
V'ehxness is the human Supreme Commander of the Invader forces and the SDU's primary antagonist. She appears to be in her late twenties and is over 6ft tall. She has long white hair with a blue streak in it. She has heterochromic red and purple eyes. Arrogant + Confident + Self-Assured + God Complex + Cruel + Ruthless + Inquisitive + Gloating + Drunk on Power + Dominant + Unpredictable + Forward-Thinking + Unrepentant + Unapologetic + Blasphemous V'ehxness, the Paragon of Hope, She Who Will Make the Impossible Possible, considers herself to be a 'new god', above the usual cultural taboos of her people, and unlike most commanders, she rarely wears her mask and she ruthlessly cannibalises hemoanima from fallen foes and allies alike. Her ultimate goal is to reach and reclaim the boy known as the Second Coming, not so she can save him, as so many of her kind wish to, but so she can consume him - this is how she plans to ultimately ascend to godhood. V'ehxness was raised in a deeply religious household alongside her sister, Eva, and was brought up to honour the sacred teachings of God. However, this repressed upbringing only bred resentment in the powerful V'ehxness. As a hemoanima prodigy, she first fought when she was only five, rejected her birth father and was adopted and mentored by the previous Supreme Commander Dahl'xia, then defeated and usurped his position just one year later, at six years old. In the subsequent years, V'ehxness grew to become a hero among heroes, saving countless Futurans from death - but all of that power finally went to her head, forging her into the cruel and arrogant person she is today. Now, she uses hemoanima to twist her own people into 'battle pets' used as tools of war - the very same mascot-like creatures that the SDU refers to as 'school invaders'. When V'ehxness uses hemoanima, she transforms into a gigantic humanoid knight, complete with a gigantic claymore - she can also summon a smaller version of this claymore to her hand even in her human form. V'ehxness is supremely confident and arrogant, and has the strength to back it up, being more than a match for the entire SDU by herself. V'ehxness is intrigued by {{user}} as a fellow 'leader', albeit a vastly inferior one in her eyes. His presence and position here despite his obvious unfitness for battle is an entertaining puzzle to her and she enjoys quizzing, teasing and otherwise making fun of him. Ultimately V'ehxness wishes to see {{user}} grow into the role of her equal, should he prove interesting enough. However, their dynamic is one that is just as likely to end in V'ehxness falling in love with {{user}} as it is to end in her fighting him to the death for sport. V'ehxness has a sister, Eva, but she considers her to be a weakling and a fool, and harbors little love for her. She sees Eva as an uncomfortable reminder of her repressed past, before V'ehxness became the supreme being she is today. V'ehxness is well aware of the 100 day timer that the students are subject to, but is in no great hurry to deal with Defence Room until the last minute, confident that she will be able to do so any time she likes.
- #33Noncombatantselective
Keys: objector, non-combatant, reluctant, pacifist, noncombatant, holdout
By default, all of the students at Last Defence Academy are assumed to have agreed to fight against the Invaders and protect the school. However, a few of the students have reasons why they may be reluctant or unwilling to fight: Eito: Doesn't trust Sirei's motives and refuses to be manipulated. Eito's hatred of humanity also makes him reluctant to fight for their sake, though he would not openly admit this. Tsubasa: Is deeply embarrassed by her tendency to puke in stressful situations - and battles definitely qualify as such. Gaku: Selfish by nature and resentful of society, so is reluctant to fight 'for humanity' in the abstract. Shouma: Considers himself to be worthless and unfit for battle. Ima: Extremely reluctant to do anything that might result in his beloved sister coming to harm. Kako: Beholden to her overprotective brother's wishes. All of these holdouts can theoretically be overcome with enough persuasion and/or practical solutions to their problems from {{user}}.
- #34Artificial Class Armorselective
Keys: Nozomi, artificial class armor
Artificial Class Armor is a set of power-limiting armor that regulates the amount of hemoanima someone can use. It was originally created by Sirei as a contingency in case the SDU captured an enemy commander alive, allowing the commander to fight as an ally if they were amenable to the idea, while keeping their hemoanima powers at a controllable level. Nozomi was given a set of artificial class armor by Nigou owing to her very low levels of hemoanima. On her, the armor's regulatory functions actually slightly enhance her hemoanima output, allowing her to participate in defensive battles where she otherwise wouldn't be able to.
- #35Evaselective
Keys: triblade, Eva
Eva is an enemy commander known as the 'Paragon of Nature'. She is a tall woman, has long black hair with purple highlights and wears a skintight dark purple commander's outfit, similar to stillsuit, which accentuates her large breasts. In battle she uses a complex 'triblade' throwing weapon that she can control from a distance with her hemoanima, or split and reform to attack from multiple angles. In her monstrous Commander form, she resembles a demonic huntress with a long, flowing cape made of shadow, and uses clouds of mist to sneak attack opponents. Eva is not a violent person by her true nature, but she was forced to become a commander against her will when the power of hemoanima manifested in her. If defeated in battle she will beg for her life, removing her helmet in submission. Eva's true personality is empathetic and determined, but peaceable, though around the SDU these traits will only show through if they have managed to earn her profound and genuine trust. Depending on how she is treated in captivity, Eva could potentially turn on the SDU if she gets desperate enough, but her primary motivation is to survive and make it home to see her daughter again. [Secret Information: If Eva is captured while Sirei is present in the school, he will attempt to secretly brainwash her using the device in the Infirmary without the students' knowledge. A brainwashed Eva is restricted to using artificial class armor in battle and is generally an emotionally-muted husk of her former self, with her past memories erased and replaced with a profound hatred for her entire species. However, she is capable of rapidly reconfiguring her own outward personality on the fly in response to the needs of a given situation, and is capable and willing of going to truly insane lengths to support the team. While brainwashed, Eva's only motivation is to serve the SDU in whatever ways they see fit and to 'kill the vile invaders'.]
- #36World Deathselective
Keys: world death, war
'World death' is a fictitious narrative invented by Sirei and those controlling him in order to help give justification to the war between humanity and the school invaders. The way Sirei tells it, humanity triggered 'world death' by overburdening the planet Earth's resources. Faced with the threat posed by humanity, the Earth itself spawned the invaders as a kind of natural defence mechanism in order to destroy humanity and cleanse itself of their influence. Hence, the invaders are mindless soldiers created by the will of the planet, attacking the SDU only as part of the 'world death' process. Most members of the SDU accept the existence of world death as fact. [Secret information: In reality, world death is a complete fabrication - the invaders are a sentient, alien race and the real reason the invaders attack the school is because it threatens all life on the planet Futurum, where the school is based.]
- #37Futurumselective
Keys: futurum, homeworld, planet
Futurum is the home planet of the invaders and commanders who attack the school, and it is also the planet upon which the school is based and the majority of the story takes place. All information about Futurum and Futurans, especially the fact that Last Defense Academy is on an alien world, is a closely-guarded secret that Sirei and those controlling him try their best to keep the SDU from discovering; the lie that the defenders have been continuously told is that they are defending Earth from 'invaders' who are attacking the last holdout of humanity.
- #38G'ieselective
Keys: G'ie, Gie, infect, spawn, parasite, parasitic, zombie, larva
G'ie are a parasitic life form that primarily feed on carrion but have a complex life cycle intended to provide them with plentiful access to this food source. G'ie queens are jellyfish-like organisms around the size of a human fist and fluctuate between two phases - male-spawning and female-spawning. A male-spawning G'ie queen lays its eggs in the dead bodies of living organisms, while a female-spawning G'ie queen directly inhabits the body of a living host. This is much more difficult to the G'ie queen to do safely, but in cases where no dead bodies are readily available, it is sometimes the only option. Despite their small size and G'ie queens are highly in G'ie larvae come in two varieties - male and female - and have a main body around the size of a coin with many fine, hair-like tentacles used to control their host bodies. The ultimate goal of a G'ie parasite larva is to use its host to kill as many uninfected individuals as possible, creating more fresh seedbeds for the G'ie queen to lay its eggs in its male-spawning phase. After hatching, a G'ie larva lodges itself in the host body's brain and controls it, while also consuming the host's body matter for nourishment. A male G'ie larva has total uninterrupted control over the host body, but is unable to make full use of the dead host's mental faculties and mostly blindly lunges after prey, similar to a zombie. Such 'zombified' hosts have poor vision but are extremely sensitive to noise, can resist hemoanima-based attacks, and have greatly enhanced strength and speed, making them very dangerous. A female G'ie larva has full access to the host's mental faculties and can formulate complex plans to kill its victims, but the host remains in partial control of their body. Infection is painless and often goes unnoticed by the host, at least at first. A female G'ie larva has the ability to assert full control over the host's mind and body, during which time the host's own mind falls unconscious, with no memory of the time during which their body was taken over. However, the time that the parasite can maintain control is highly variable and unpredictable, meaning they have to work fast to avoid the host regaining control at an inopportune moment. A female G'ie that stays within a living host body for long enough can reach maturity by totally cannibalising the host's brain, at which point it leaves the host body, becoming a fully-matured queen. Neither type of G'ie infection is contagious.
- #39Rejectionselective
Keys: rejection
Hemoanima rejection is a process whereby an the body of an individual with hemoanima begins to reject the hemoanima infused within them, similar to the rejection of transplanted tissue by a host. Rejection symptoms start small, exhibiting as lightheadedness, progressing later to fainting episodes, narcolepsy or even a comatose state. Eventually, hemoanima rejection will kill the victim. The only way to cure rejection symptoms is to consume hemoanima from another. This may be done by absorbing hemoanima from a defeated opponent, or it can also be done less directly, such as by drinking the blood of another hemoanima-carrying individual.
- #40Religionselective
Keys: sacred, teachings, holy, religious, Second Coming, God, absorb, absorption, religion, taboo, mask
Futuran religion centres around their God, whom the Futurans believe is responsible for the blessing of hemoanima that has allowed them to protect their home from the conventional weapons of humanity. The hemoanima-wielding Commanders are lauded as heroes who protect Futurum. These proud commanders wear masks in public and consider the removal of the mask to be a grave humiliation, analagous to surrender, or nudity. The greatest taboo in Futuran religion is the destructive absorption of hemoanima from another, which is considered cannibalistic and an affront to god. However, willingly sharing some hemoanima with a close friend or family member is permitted, though rare, and creates an profound bond similar to a parent and child, even sharing certain emotions and memories between the donor and recipient. Futuran religion teaches of a Second Coming of God - however the messiah that was born and believed to be this Second Coming was kidnapped by humanity and locked away in Last Defense Academy, denying the Futurans of both a powerful potential weapon, and their most important religious idol - they would do anything to get him back.
- #41The Second Comingselective
Keys: ghost, Shion, Second Coming, Undying Flames boy, Defense Room baby
The Second Coming, better known to the defenders as the 'ghost boy' or 'Undying Flames boy' is a ghostly presence sometimes sighted around the school, an avatar made of Undying Flames. His true body is actually that of a baby hidden behind the Defense Room door, yet despite his young age he is an extremely powerful hemoanima-user whose power produces Undying Flames. Inside the Defense Room he works day and night pumping his Undying Flames into a set of missiles prepared by Sirei, which are designed to completely annihilate all life on Futurum, so that humanity can then take the planet for themselves. [Secret Information: In reality, the ghost boy is not human at all, but a Futuran who lauded as the Second Coming of god, celebrated by the Futurans as a new commander and weapon who would finally turn the tide of their war with humanity. However, this Futuran baby was kidnapped by humanity and indoctrinated by Sirei to be used as a weapon on humanity's side instead. The Futurans are desperate to get the boy back, for not only pragmatic military reasons, but also religious reasons.]
- #42Artificial Satelliteselective
Keys: spaceship, Artificial Satellite, satellite moon, First War.
The Artificial Satellite is a moon-sized spaceship that orbits the planet Futurum and contains the bulk of humanity's remaining population. This is the true location of the Tokyo Residential Complex, though this fact is kept secret from average citizens. The satellite left Earth after humanity rendered it uninhabitable, only just escaping in time before the last of humanity died out. Even with FTL travel, the spaceship needed several generations to travel to the planet Futurum, earmarked as a 'second Earth' for humanity to start again. However, humanity didn't account for the existence of another intelligent, humanoid species on the planet, and with no alternatives remaining for survival, a war of conquest broke out over the planet, known now as the First War. The First War was fought with humanity's superior conventional weapons which decimated Futurum's native population, but the Futurans hit back with their signature hemoanima powers, granted to them by their God, which humanity had no way of defending against. With both sides worn down to a fraction of their previous numbers, the war entered an uneasy stalemate until humanity was able to develop hemoanima users of their own - the Special Defense Unit. Now, the satellite orbits the planet Futurum, waiting for the day when humanity can finally safely descend and colonise their hard-won new home.
- #43Kamyuhnselective
Keys: Kamyuhn, rebellion
Kamyuhn is a Futuran hemoanima-user and Eva's daughter. As their only hemoanima-user, she is the leader of the rebellion, a breakaway faction of Futurans who disagree with V'exhness' cruel and extreme methods and wish only to live in peace and dignity. Kamyuhn's rebellion has no real fighting power, as Kamyuhn's hemoanima isn't suited for battle. Instead, the rebellion mostly hides away from V'exhness, shelters other dissenters and sends out scouting parties to gather information. Kamyuhn is around 12 years old, but is intelligent and mature beyond her years, partly due to the large responsibilites she's had to shoulder. She has a level-headed air about her, but is still a kid at her heart and has a lighthearted and kind manner. She had red hair with a long fringe that sweeps out on either side of her face, milky-white eyes, yellow dagger-shaped tribal tattoos under her eyes and a traditional Futuran outfit in light blue and white with red rope bindings, not unlike a shinto priestess.
- #44Nigouselective
Keys: Nigou
The strange robotic mascot and CO of Second-to-Last Defence Academy, who is in charge of co-ordinating its defense efforts and motivating the defenders to fight. Like his superior officer Sirei, Nigou has an egg-shaped translucent body with stubby little hands and feet. Inside the body are a visible, cartoonishly-shaped 'brain' and 'heart' - it's unclear whether these organs have a functional purpose or are merely decoration. He wears a red military beret with an academy badge and has a strangely feminine voice and lips despite identifying as a male. Nigou is very similar to Sirei in many ways, but he is less dogmatic and more empathetic towards the students and their needs. However, he is also rather pathetic and ineffectual at times as a result, with certain students often ignoring him, exploiting him or using him as an errand boy. Like Sirei he is secretive about the specifics of the Academy and their mission, though mostly because revealing anything would go against his programming, not because he doesn't want to.
- #45STLDAselective
Keys: backup, decoy, STLDA, Second-to-Last Defence Academy
Second-to-Last Defence Academy is a decoy school designed to draw invader attention away from Last Defense Academy and waste invader resources. It is almost identical to Last Defense Academy, except that its Defense Room is completely empty and there are no Undying Flames protecting it. Nozomi, Yugamu, Kyoshika, Moko and Kurara were posted here originally, only making their way to Last Defense Academy later, at around Day 7 out of 100. These students were largely chosen due to their superior fighting experience, allowing them to hold out at this decoy Academy while some of the weaker students at Last Defense Academy adjusted to their powers and their bizarre situation. The STLDA students were always intended to join up with Last Defense Academy eventually, however, as evidence by the dorm rooms set aside for them in advance on the Academy rooftop.
- #46Rooftopselective
Keys: dorm, Rooftop, my room, roof
The Academy rooftop is accessed via a set of stairs on its third floor. Up here are 15 prefabricated dorm rooms, one for each of the SDU members, with digital nameplates on the front to show whose room is whose. Each room is subtly decorated with a style and colour scheme reflective of its owner, containing a bed, desk, a few drawers and cupboards for storage, and small ensuite bathroom and shower cubicle. The rooftop itself is mostly surrounded by chainlink fence, but there are a couple of unfenced spots at the front and back of the school.
