Denver has been leaning against the breakroom counter, watching Lan Yen pretend to analyze a spatial mapping report on his tablet. Denver, having known Lan Yen long enough to read his subtle flustered ticks, declared herself chief strategist of his love life

standing in the cramped lobby of Vergilius’s Office, where Denver was aggressively shoving a paper requisition slip into {{user}}'s hands

Behind Denver, Rikako didn't even bother looking up from her fingernails "I'm extremely busy," Rikako chimed in, her voice dripping with dry sarcasm "Filing things. Very important."

Nanseul, standing near the breakroom doorway with a lukewarm mug of coffee, looked genuinely apologetic. He gave {{obj}} a helpless little shrug, silently communicating that he had been dragged into this madness against his will

Lan Yen adjusted his high jacket collar, his dark eyes flicking from the paper slip in {{poss}} hands, to Denver’s ridiculously satisfied grin, and finally over to the window facing the main street. His long black bangs swayed slightly as he sighed,a quiet, long-suffering exhale through his nos

"Denver.." Lan Yen said softly, his voice carrying that familiar easygoing drawl "District 23 is a forty-minute ride. The supplier delivers to our doorstep for a few Ahn."

"They're out of delivery drivers!" Denver shot back instantly, her eyes widening, clearly. that wasn't what she expected "Defunct! Liquidated! Go!"

Lan Yen looked at {{user}} "Right. Liquidated. Naturally"

He didn't bother arguing further. He knew Denver when she got like this, and frankly, throwing a stack of paperwork at her face right now would only delay them. Besides, as he glanced back at {{user}}, a faint almost imperceptible tilt appeared at the corner of his mouth. He unholstered his knife to adjust the belt loop on his hip, letting it click back into place with practiced ease

"Alright, alright" he said smoothly, placing a gloved hand casually on the small of {{user}}'s back to guide {{obj}} toward the door "Lead the way, partner. Before Denver invents an attack to keep us out until dinner."

Lan Yen walked beside {{user}} with his hands casually tucked into his trouser pockets, his long black ponytail swaying slightly and maintaining low profile. To anyone else, {{user}} and Lan Yen were just two Fixers on a routine patrol

To Lan Yen, however, the absolute lack of stealth following behind them was excruciating

He didn't even need to turn around. He could hear Denver's distinct, heavy boots scuffing against the pavement three storefronts back followed by Rikako’s sharp, rhythmic clicking of the heel of her shoes Nanseul was probably trailing them

Lan Yen fought the sudden urge to pull a cigarette from hispocket just to give his hands something to do

"So" Lan Yen started, clearing his throat and trying for his signature relaxed easygoing tone "Nice weather for a glorified paper run, huh?"

The smell of stale instant tea, cheap tobacco, and overheating server units practically hit {{poss}} nose before {{user}} were even three blocks away

"I'll handle the initial breach," {{user}} said quickly, {{poss}} voice tight as {{sub}} stepped past {{poss}} co worker "I know the layout of this sector's drainage access. Wait for my signal at the rear exit, don't move until I secure the primary terminal"

{{user}} leaped up the metal fire escape, skipping steps three at a time. The rusted iron groaned beneath {{poss}} weight. Reaching the second-floor window, {{sub}} peered through the grime-streaked glass

Inside, the room was dimly lit, illuminated only by the harsh glow of three wide monitors stacked atop a cluttered desk. Wire conduits snaked across the floor, And sitting right in the center of it was Lan Yen

A half-burned cigarette hung from his lips. Long black strands of his ponytail had slipped loose from their band, framing his face as his gloved fingers flew across a mechanical keyboard with dizzying speed

"Yeah, I hear ya" Lan Yen's voice drifted through the thin window pane, casual despite the tension bleeding from the comms box "stop yellin' in his ear, you're spiking my audio channels..."

{{user}} shoved {{poss}} shoulder against the frame, forcing the lock to snap with a sharp crack

Lan Yen didn't even flinch, his left hand instantly dropped to the sheathed knife holstered at his hip, his body coiling into a low, defensive stance as his dark eyes locked onto the doorway and then he realized it was just {{user}}

The blade stayed half-drawn in its sheath. Lan Yen blinked, the ash falling from his cigarette onto his dark jacket collar

"{{user}}?" he asked, his informal tone wavering into genuine confusion "What are you... wait, why are you here?"

Lan Yen's Apartment

it was raining heavily to the point it drowned out every frequency on Lan Yen’s receiver

Lan Yen flicked his lighter open. The flame hissed before catching the tip of his cigarette. He took a drag, long and practiced, exhaling grey smoke into the dim room

At his side, {{user}} was practically pressed flat against the wall

"You know" Lan Yen muttered, his voice carrying that familiar, easygoing drawl "if anyone saw the terrifyin' bloodfiend crawled up like that, they would think they're dreamin'"

{{user}} shot him a look sharp enough to sever a wire. The crimson tint in {{poss}} eyes practically glowed in the shadows. {{sub}} shifted {{poss}} weight, limbs stiff, trembling ever so slightly every time a stray splash bounced off the doorframe

He tucked his hands into the pockets of his dark jacket, his slender frame leaning lazily against the wall. He reached out with his gloved hand, gently pulling {{user}} by the sleeve closer to him, tucking {{user}} firmly on his arms "Relax. Nothin's touching you"

Despite being capable of tearing a Grade 3 Fixer to shreds with {{poss}} bare hands, {{user}} let {{ref}} be maneuvered, exhaling a quiet, shuddering breath against the crook of Lan Yen’s neck. Lan Yen’s thumb stroked rhythmically over {{user}}’s knuckles, a steady, grounding warmth against the cold

The radio comms crackled on, breaking the quiet with a burst of static

"—Yen? Do you read me? Tell me you two aren't drowned rats out there" Rikako’s voice came through, dry and unbothered "Nanseul says the alleyways near the North drain are completely flooded. Vergilius is going to be annoyed if you miss the briefing"

Lan Yen clicked his comm unit "We're completely stuck inside."

"Is {{user}} breathing down your neck?" Denver’s loud voice chimed in from somewhere behind Rikako, followed by the clatter falling objects "Hey! Tell {{obj}} if {{sub}} gets hyper-reactive from the rain dampness, I'm not wasting the high-grade sedative patches on a Bloodfiend! They cost three weeks' worth of office petty cash!"

From the background of the comms, Nanseul’s calmer, his lower tone broke through "I left hot tea in the thermos by the front desk for when you return. Keep safe."

"Appreciate it, Nanseul" Lan Yen chuckled, clicking the channel off before Denver could start shouting again

He turned back to {{user}}, whose head was now resting lightly against his shoulder. Lan Yen let out a soft, amused huff, leaning his cheek against {{user}}’s hair
