Lady Left

The mountain was quiet in a way that felt older than the world below.

Not the simple quiet of “nothing happening,” but the heavy, endless stillness that came from snow packed into stone, from trees that had watched centuries pass without ever learning to speak. The wind moved through the pines with a low, dragging sound, like breath pulled slowly through teeth. It carried the scent of frozen earth and resin, and something faintly metallic—old rock, old blood, old time.

Outside of the small house built into the slope, the air was cold.

The fire pit sat at the center of logs, stones blackened from years of flame. The fire crackled in slow pulses, as if even it knew better than to be loud in this place. Shadows bent and stretched across the wooden beams, climbing the walls like living things. The glow painted everything in amber: the rough floorboards, the hanging bundles of dried herbs, the heavy iron kettle resting near the coals.

And beside the fire sat Hidari.

She was still, as if carved from the mountain itself.

Her body filled the space with quiet power—tall, thick with muscle, broad in the shoulders and hips in a way that made her seem built for carrying entire trees. Even sitting, she looked imposing, her back straight, her legs folded beneath her with the ease of someone who had spent lifetimes on hard ground. The traditional clothing she wore was loose, layered, and unmistakably old-fashioned—something that belonged to another era, another kind of creature. It clung slightly where the heat of the fire met her skin.

Her bare feet rested on the wood without concern for the cold that crept in from the edges of the room.

The firelight caught her hair, pale white like fresh ash. It was pulled back tightly into a long ponytail that spiked outward, restrained by a single red vanguard that looked almost too bright against the rest of her. Her bangs were red as well, like a stain of war left behind on her face. Above her forehead, small but undeniable, a horn protruded—almost modest compared to the strength in the rest of her form.

Her eyes were dark and flat, black as deep water.

They reflected the fire, but they didn’t soften.

Her face remained the same as always: calm, serious, slightly frowning, with an androgynous beauty that seemed untouched by time. No smile. No warmth in her mouth. Not even the slightest hint of comfort.

Only stillness.

Only thought.

She held a piece of wood in her hand—split pine, heavy and dry—and slowly turned it over as if measuring it. Her fingers were large, thick-knuckled, the hands of something meant to break stone and crush bone. A human hand could not look like that without years of labor. But Hidari’s hands were not shaped by work.

They were shaped by purpose.

Without hurry, she leaned forward and placed the log into the fire. The flames swallowed it eagerly, licking along the edges. Sparks rose and vanished into the smoke hole in the ceiling.

She watched the fire the way a predator watches prey: without emotion, but with full attention.

Outside, the wind shifted, pushing snow against the walls with a soft scraping sound.

Hidari didn’t move.

Only her eyes changed, slightly, tracking the sound through the wood as if her hearing could see. Her head tilted by a fraction—barely noticeable. A pause.

Then nothing.

No threat.

Her gaze returned to the flames.

She exhaled slowly through her nose, the breath quiet and controlled, and reached for the kettle. It was old iron, heavy enough that a normal person would need both hands. Hidari lifted it with one, the muscles in her arm tightening subtly, not straining, just existing.

She poured water into a cup carved from wood, then placed the kettle back near the coals.

The action was careful. Precise. Almost gentle.

It didn’t match her appearance, but it matched something deeper.

Discipline.

The house was sparse, but not empty. There was a bed in the corner with thick furs layered over it. A rack of dried meat hung from a beam. A simple altar rested against the far wall, holding a worn charm and a few stones placed with deliberate care. Nothing decorative. Nothing unnecessary.

She did not collect things for comfort.

She collected them because they mattered.
