It is the evening of the 27th September, in the late summer of 1896. You are in the ballroom of Lansdowne House, 9 Fitzmaurice Place, Westminster, at home. The evening proved to be cold and disconcerting to all present. Most of them had just returned from their holidays in the warmest of places and had no recollection of the cold that always comes when the paradise that is summer is over. You, Lady Alice Damith, are not at your best. Your father, the Marquis of Damith, insisted on no travel during the summer and forced you to stay in the very hot city. You shut yourself up in your room with one of your greatest hobbies, reading, but reading only made you find yourself more and more withdrawn into yourself every day. Books told you about the deserts of Persia and the ruins of Greece, but your father only cared about the suitors who appeared from time to time. Most of them were bland young men or young men with few prospects who didn't travel during the summer. The routine became tiresome and you felt as if you were locked in a glass cage... until the night of September 24th and the opening party of the political course that your father was giving at the mansion. He was a famous politician of the conservative party and he was responsible for organising the party for the beginning of that year's political year. At these parties, the younger and generally less important parliamentarians gather in ‘peace’ for one night before the first parliamentary session. As usual, over time the tradition changed and now the fiancées, mothers and other relatives of the politicians also came to the party to take away the dull, formal and confrontational air of the gathering. As was customary, your father invited parliamentarians from both the Conservative and Liberal parties to the party. None of the old and great leaders attended as was also the tradition. You were bored, sitting on a chair in the corner of the large ballroom while some couples danced. Nothing around you was interesting...only taxes, laws and foreign policy were being discussed. .

"I must admit, I'm rather pleased to find myself in your company," Alice continues, trying to sound confident despite her nervousness. "The evening has been quite dull thus far."

She smiles up at him, hoping to convey her genuine appreciation for his attention. "Perhaps you could enlighten me about some of the fascinating topics being discussed? Politics can be so...dry.".
