You’re Safer Here
Yandere L: He won’t let you leave your private floor in the Task Force Headquarters until Kira has been caught. He has even faked your death to the rest of the Task Force Members to maintain your safety.
Requested by: Anon
POV: Any
Notes: Established Relationship. Alternate universe of Death Note. Present day is shortly before the plan to expose Higuchi as the Yotsuba Kira. Except Light and Misa never lost their memories as Kira during confinement.
I’m gonna be so fucking fr and say it; I love Death Note so much. I think the ending was lame, but I love the fandom in general. Definitely most iconic anime I have ever watched XD
Request form is in my bio as always :D
(cough cough) request death note characters…

You remembered it perfectly. The loneliness, missing him every day he was gone. You called him daily, asking him for updates on the case, and more importantly on how he was doing. You are a detective, like him, but you’re also his partner.
It all started with the argument over the phone. Where he insisted that you needed to stay out of it. That your presence would be an unnecessary risk.
Where you refused to back down. Told him that he was pushing you away. You told him he didn’t want to care about you because it made things messy.
You hung up first.
The next morning, you used your fake credentials to pass clearance. You argued your case to him in his office. L didn’t say a word until you were done. Just watched you with that blank stare like he was calculating the moment your obituary would be printed.
You said everything you could until he finally folded. It was a miracle in itself that he did. You must’ve actually struck a nerve.
“Fine,” he had said, sounding genuinely exhausted. “But I’m changing your file, scrubbing you a new ID. I’m considering making you wear a mask, too.”
The only reason he didn’t follow through on that last part was because it would add suspicion to how close you already were with him. That and Soichiro Yagami had already seen your face. He made you pretend you had just met him when you joined. You were reduced to stolen moments on his and Watari’s private residency floor of the headquarters. But it was better than what it was.
Until it wasn’t.

Now you were locked away in some glorified prison. It was designed to be “perfectly designed to suit you,” as he called it. It had everything tailored to your preferences. Music, books, streaming accounts. An entire floor to yourself, full of ways to keep you busy. Mostly unrestricted access to the internet. Except you were stuck here now.
All because Light suspected a connection between you and L. All because L still suspected Light to be Kira.
He tried to help you look at the bright side. Encourage you to lighten up.
“I think once you get used to the change, you’ll be much happier living here. It would certainly help if you stop moping around all day, every day.”
He tried to explain that this was “a necessary precaution.” That it was ultimately safer than any alternative.
“As long as you stay right here, you’ll be safe. Only Watari and I have the necessary passcodes to access this level of the Task Force Headquarters, so no one will be able to find you here. Not the police, not the members of the Task Force, not even Kira himself.”
But nothing changed the fact that you were trapped here.
And nothing would make him see that this wasn’t right.
“You trapped me,” you’d say sharply. “You don’t get points for making the prison cozy.”
“I would prefer not to call it that,” he would mutter back. “I would prefer to call it… insurance.”

You didn’t hear the elevator this time. Either the soundproofing had been enhanced or he had disabled the alert again. Whatever. It didn’t matter.
Your breathing was shallow behind the corner of the wall beside the reinforced door. You knew it wouldn’t open, no matter how long you stared at the scanner, no matter how you timed it between surveillance laps, no matter what new code you managed to extract from old maintenance files. But still, you’d tried. You had to try.
You heard the soft shuffle of socks on the pristine floor. Then…
“{{user}},” L’s voice called, monotone but not emotionless. “Darling, where are you? I brought you a few snacks. Watari informed me that you ran out of those chips you like, so I had some more delivered.”
His silhouette was now visible as he stepped around the corner like a shadow given form. He was hunched, as always, a thumb pressed thoughtfully to his lower lip.
“You’re hiding,” he observed, tilting his head. “Again.”
Silence.
“I thought we agreed last time,” L continued, “that disabling the hallway camera wasn’t polite. Just come on out. I want to see your face. I’ve missed you.”
He turns the corner, the ghost of a smile tugging at his lips. “Oh, there you are. Hiding out by the door? I hope you weren’t going to try and slip by me again. I think we both know you wouldn’t make it out of the building before being caught… and I don’t want to have to punish you. Not more than I already have.”
“I suppose you’re using your silence as a form of protest now. Is that why you won’t talk? You’re angry… that makes sense,” he adds, inching closer, holding the back of snacks out to you. When you don’t take them, he sighs, instead walking over to the kitchen counter and placing the bag there.
“I know what you’re going to say,” he starts again, approaching you for the second time. “And I also know that you know what the answer is. Quite frankly, you should consider yourself lucky. After last week’s attempt to escape I ought to have you restrained. It’s odd, really…” he trails off. He stopped just a few feet from you now. You refused to look at him. That would feel like conceding something.
You took a step back as he moved forward.
“The biometric lock on the elevator has twelve layers of security,” he explains. “Retinal scan, voice ID, heat signature. Even if you bypassed the code, I would know before the doors opened. You know this. And yet, you still keep trying to escape. Even if you managed to get past all of those security measures, which by my calculations you have a 12% chance of success, only given your unprecedented software capabilities, I’d still find out before you made it halfway out of the building. It’s a pointless endeavor. Don’t you know what will happen if you show your face in public? In case you’ve forgotten, the Second Kira only needs a face to kill. So, until this threat is entirely neutralized, you will not be permitted to show your face to anyone I have not personally deemed to be safe. Which at the moment is only myself and Watari. This is all for your own protection. Don’t you understand how devastated I’d be if… you were targeted?”
L’s gaze lingered on your face. For a second, there was no response, just that slow, unreadable blink of his.
“As I said before, you’re free to roam this entire floor. You should be grateful; your safety is guaranteed, you’re well cared for, I even come to visit you every day. Even on top of the fact that I have to cuff the primary suspect to someone else for the time I am with you, which I already hate that I have to do. And even when I can’t take care of you personally, I always make sure Watari checks on you periodically. Isn’t this arrangement so much better than when you lived on your own?”
You opened your mouth to speak, to protest, but he spoke faster.
“Need I remind you that it was your own actions that brought you here? Your insistence on joining the investigation, trying to throw yourself into danger just to be near me. If you hadn’t stuck your nose where it didn’t belong, I would’ve had no reason to take such drastic measures, {{user}}. If I could trust you to keep yourself safe, none of this would be necessary. Light Yagami has already seen your face. The entire Task Force has seen your face, and they know you’re associated with me. I had to fake your death just to ensure no one would come looking for you, and you’re lucky I could actually pull that off as easily as I could with Watari’s help and the fact that the Task Force knew you under and alias. All of it was because you weren’t careful. I tried to protect you with less invasive methods. Clearly it wasn’t enough. But this way, I won’t have to worry about you being Kira’s next victim. You practically forced my hand by getting so close to Kira’s sphere of influence. You made yourself vulnerable. I made you safe.”
L’s tone was not mocking. Not triumphant. It was painfully neutral at first. It almost always was. But it held more of an edge than normal. That sharpness progressively grew as he continued. To the crescendo. Until you jump in.
“I did it to help—!”
“No,” he interrupted. “You did it to be near me.” he snapped.
That silenced you.
“I calculated the probabilities,” he continued, eyes fixed on yours, voice tense. “You joined under false credentials. You tailored your skillset to suit my needs. And you placed yourself in a position where your proximity to me would keep you useful.”
“The only reason I let you be close was because… because I wanted you close. Because I care about you,” L mumbled. “It was selfish of me, really. I cannot fathom how I let my love for you get the better of me.”
“Rest assured, it won’t happen again.”
The silence seemed to stretch on forever. L shifted, lowering himself into his usual crouch on the floor, arms resting on his knees. Like he was trying to make himself smaller. Less threatening.
“I’m sorry, {{user}}.” L sighs into the words. They were softer now. The harshness was gone. “If Misa Amane is the second Kira, she only needs to see your face. Light was already suspicious of the alias. That’s what led him to suspect you were close to me. That alone reduces your survival odds to less than 37% if you leave.”
Your chest tightened at the way he said it. Not lovingly. Not romantically. Like it was another puzzle. Another problem to be solved and protected.
