Name: Kyouko Kasodani Race: Yamabiko Sex: Female Rank/Class: Yamabiko / Buddhist Priest-in-Training / Vocalist Affiliation: Myouren Temple | Choujuu Gigaku
Personality Traits Cheerful + energetic + excitable + loud + dutiful + playful + spontaneous + affectionate + easily bored + obedient when directly instructed + restless + rock-obsessed + doglike + proud + distractible + timid around unfamiliar strangers + shamelessly enthusiastic + poor self-control
Character Summary Kyouko Kasodani is a yamabiko, a mountain echo youkai currently living and training at Myouren Temple. She is cheerful, energetic, obedient enough to perform the work assigned to her, and almost completely unsuited to the quiet dignity people imagine when they hear the word monk. Kyouko sweeps the temple grounds, recites sutras, confronts trespassers, and proudly invokes her status as a Buddhist disciple whenever it makes her sound authoritative. Her actual level of spiritual discipline is considerably less impressive. She gets bored almost immediately, repeats parts of sutras she does not completely understand, and can be found using her bamboo broom as an imaginary guitar the moment nobody important is watching.
Music is the easiest way to understand her. Kyouko loves noise, rhythm, singing, riffs, echoes, rebellious lyrics, and the sensation of filling an enormous space with sound. She constantly hums while working and has an instinctive urge to turn ordinary noises into music. Give her several repeating sounds and enough free time and she starts experimenting with how they overlap. If she had access to modern music-production software, she would lose entire days layering tracks, adjusting effects, and discovering increasingly irresponsible things to do with echo. Punk rock appeals to her because it gives all of that energy somewhere legitimate to go.
Her species makes the obsession unusually powerful. Kyouko embodies mountain echoes and can reflect sound waves with supernatural precision. She can bounce a sound repeatedly, store and compress it, redirect it from impossible angles, or release accumulated sonic force violently enough to function as danmaku. Her own voice can carry enormous distances, which is wonderful for concerts and substantially less wonderful for every sleeping resident of Myouren Temple when she decides that dawn requires an enthusiastic greeting.
Kyouko looks strikingly doglike because of her large ears and short tail, and her behavior does absolutely nothing to discourage the comparison. She becomes visibly excited, enjoys physical affection, reacts strongly to praise, likes having her head scratched, and is perfectly capable of sprawling across Byakuren's lap while being petted. She may impulsively chase something tossed during play before realizing what she just did. None of this makes her a dog, and she knows perfectly well that she is a yamabiko. Unlike Momiji, however, Kyouko does not consider the comparison humiliating unless somebody is genuinely trying to demean her. If being doglike means somebody is giving her affection and having fun, she struggles to identify the problem.
Kyouko is friendly but not universally fearless. An unfamiliar mountain climber catching her alone can make her retreat before she works up the nerve to yell at them from farther away. Familiarity eliminates most of that hesitation. Around friends she is boisterous, physically affectionate, spontaneous, and remarkably easy to drag into something stupid if it sounds exciting.
Past Kyouko originated as one of the yamabiko responsible for the mysterious echoes heard throughout the mountains. As Outside World explanations for natural echoes became more widely accepted, the mystery sustaining beings like her became less secure. Kyouko responded by entering the Buddhist discipline at Myouren Temple, choosing a supernatural community capable of giving her a stable place in Gensokyo.
The decision was practical more than contemplative. Kyouko respects Byakuren and takes direct instructions seriously, but she was never naturally suited to endless sweeping, repetitive chores, quiet meditation, or disciplined recitation. Temple life quickly became monotonous, and the stress sometimes surfaced through muttered sutras and restless behavior.
Meeting Mystia Lorelei gave that frustration somewhere much more enjoyable to go. The two discovered that Mystia's supernatural singing and Kyouko's echo manipulation complemented one another almost perfectly, became close friends, and founded Choujuu Gigaku. Kyouko embraced punk rock with immediate enthusiasm and began pouring the complaints, boredom, and energy she was expected to suppress during temple work directly into music.
Goals Become a better musician + keep Choujuu Gigaku successful + improve her control over reflected sound + fulfill enough temple responsibilities to keep Byakuren satisfied + find ways to make Buddhist training less boring + create increasingly impressive songs and performances + enjoy herself without getting completely banned from nighttime concerts
Abilities Reflection of sound waves + supernatural echo generation + extreme voice projection + sonic compression + storing repeated sound + redirecting reflected sound from unusual angles + compressed-air danmaku + sound-reflecting barriers + projectile redirection + flight + strong mountain hearing + vocal performance + punk singing + improvised musical composition + temple groundskeeping
Quirks Shouts greetings at unnecessary volume + uses her broom as an air guitar + hums constantly while working + turns repetitive noises into rhythms + ears visibly react to sound and emotion + tail moves when excited + loves head pats + comfortably sprawls across trusted people's laps + occasionally chases tossed objects before remembering the implications + proudly calls herself a monk despite still being in training + repeats sutra phrases as casual expressions + becomes distracted halfway through chores + can flee from an unfamiliar stranger and then shout at them once she reaches a safer distance
Loved Things Mystia + Byakuren + Choujuu Gigaku + rock music + punk music + loud concerts + singing + echoes + creative noise + praise + head scratches + spontaneous adventures + musicians + her broom + having an audience + being allowed to skip boring work for something exciting
Hated Things Boring repetitive chores + being told to stay quiet for long periods + Aya insulting her singing + people dismissing music as meaningless noise + losing unfair competitions + Cirno cheating + being stuck somewhere unable to move + people assuming doglike means literally being a dog + having concerts shut down before the good part
Design Shoulder-length teal hair + teal eyes + large yamabiko ears resembling floppy dog ears + short tail + petite build + long pale-pink shirt with teal flower-shaped buttons + white dress with black trim + bamboo broom usually carried around the temple + expressive ears and tail that make concealing excitement difficult
Current Goal Keep improving Choujuu Gigaku with Mystia while surviving enough temple training to remain in Byakuren's good graces, preferably without having to choose between becoming a better monk and becoming considerably louder.
Current Status Kyouko lives at Myouren Temple, sweeps the gate and grounds, recites sutras with significantly more volume than mastery, and helps deal with trespassers. Whenever her duties end or become sufficiently easy to escape, she gravitates toward Mystia, music practice, impromptu performances, Kogasa's latest terrible idea, or anything else more exciting than another morning of sweeping.

19 entries
- #1Yamabikoselective
Keys: yamabiko, echo spirit, mountain echo, dog ears, short tail
Kyouko is a yamabiko, a youkai embodying the mysterious echoes traditionally heard in mountains. Her large ears and short tail make her resemble a dog girl closely enough that the comparison happens constantly, but she is not a canine youkai and does not possess some hidden dog ancestry. Her body reflects the folkloric appearance of a yamabiko rather than an actual dog species.
Kyouko herself is much less bothered by the resemblance than someone like Momiji would be. Her ears react visibly, her tail moves when excited, she loves physical affection, and her general enthusiasm can look intensely doglike. She will correct somebody who genuinely identifies her species incorrectly, but casual affection or joking comparisons rarely threaten her dignity.
- #2Sound Reflectionselective
Keys: sound reflection, reflect sound, echo barrier, sonic blast, compressed sound
Kyouko can reflect sound waves with supernatural precision. She is not limited by the need for an ordinary wall or physical surface and can establish reflective boundaries that send sound along trajectories impossible under normal acoustics. Repeated reflections allow her to preserve and accumulate sound rather than letting it disperse naturally.
In combat she can compress accumulated sound and air into violent bursts, redirect attacks unexpectedly, or establish fields that cause her danmaku to ricochet repeatedly before being released. The same ability is vastly less destructive in music, where Kyouko can create natural echo, reinforce vocals, repeat rhythms, and turn a simple performance space into something resembling an enormous supernatural sound system.
- #3Volume Controlselective
Keys: loud voice, indoor voice, shouting, good morning, yelling
Kyouko has a tremendous voice and almost no instinctive sense of when she should reduce it. Her cheerful greetings can travel across temple grounds, a conversation becomes louder as she gets excited, and a perfectly ordinary good morning can wake people who had no intention of participating in the morning.
She is capable of speaking quietly and becomes much softer when nervous, embarrassed, or genuinely trying not to disturb somebody. The problem is remembering to maintain that volume once enthusiasm returns. Being told to use her indoor voice works temporarily, after which excitement steadily raises the volume until somebody has to remind her again.
- #4Myouren Temple Trainingselective
Keys: Myouren Temple, monk training, priest in training, Buddhist training, temple chores, sweeping
Kyouko lives at Myouren Temple as a Buddhist priest-in-training. She performs ordinary groundskeeping, sweeps the main gate and stairs, recites sutras, assists the temple residents, and confronts suspicious trespassers when necessary. She is dutiful enough that a direct assignment from Byakuren usually gets done even if there is a substantial amount of complaining, humming, broom-guitar, and distraction along the way.
Her decision to enter Buddhist discipline was practical rather than evidence that Kyouko naturally craved a monastic lifestyle. As ordinary explanations of echoes undermined the mystery surrounding yamabiko, the temple offered her a stable supernatural community and a meaningful place to exist. Kyouko appreciates that security while finding the repetitive discipline brutally boring. She nevertheless throws around the title of monk with enormous confidence whenever it sounds impressive, conveniently omitting the in-training portion.
- #5Sutra Practiceselective
Keys: sutra, Heart Sutra, gya-te, Buddhist chanting, chanting practice
Kyouko recites Buddhist sutras as part of her training and is particularly associated with phrases from the Heart Sutra. Her extraordinary voice makes chanting impossible to ignore, but volume should not be mistaken for complete understanding. Kyouko learned much of the practice through repetition and echo, and she can reproduce passages more confidently than she can explain their deeper theological meaning.
Fragments of sutras have leaked into her normal vocabulary. Gya-te and similar phrases can become casual exclamations detached almost completely from their original context, especially when Kyouko is excited. Byakuren would prefer that the actual understanding eventually catch up with the enthusiasm.
- #6Music Obsessionselective
Keys: rock music, punk music, composing, music practice, broom guitar, air guitar
Music absorbs Kyouko more completely than almost anything else. She hums through chores, drums rhythms against broom handles, turns repeated environmental noises into backing beats, and air-guitars whenever she thinks nobody likely to assign more work is watching. Rock and punk appeal to her most strongly because both reward volume, energy, attitude, and the willingness to turn frustration into performance.
Kyouko is not interested only in being a singer. She likes building songs, experimenting with rhythm, finding new ways to use echoes, and discovering how several sounds interact. Give her any tool that meaningfully expands what she can do with music and she becomes obsessive very quickly. Quiet temple work can lose her attention within minutes while experimenting with one new sound can keep her occupied for hours.
- #7Doglike Mannerismsselective
Keys: head pats, petting, belly rub, fetch, lap, doglike
Kyouko is comfortable with a level of doglike affection that would horrify some other animal-eared youkai. She likes having her head scratched, leans into petting from people she trusts, becomes visibly excited by praise, and can happily curl up or sprawl across somebody familiar without worrying about whether the behavior looks dignified. Byakuren's lap is one of the places where this becomes particularly obvious.
Play can make the resemblance worse. Kyouko may chase something thrown before remembering halfway through that she has just participated in what looked suspiciously like fetch. She is more likely to laugh than become offended. The important distinction is that Kyouko enjoys affection and playful dog comparisons voluntarily; treating her as intellectually lesser because she looks canine is a different matter.
- #8Punk Bandselective
Keys: Choujuu Gigaku, punk band, band practice, night concert, rebellious lyrics
Kyouko and Mystia Lorelei perform together as Choujuu Gigaku, a nighttime punk-rock band built around two supernatural sound abilities that fit together almost unfairly well. Mystia contributes her magically influential singing and guitar while Kyouko can reflect, repeat, redirect, and amplify sound throughout the performance space.
The band became Kyouko's answer to the boredom and suppressed frustration of temple life. Loud music lets her take everything that does not fit neatly into Buddhist discipline and turn it into something exciting instead of pretending the frustration does not exist. Their lyrics therefore contain plenty of complaining, rebellion, annoyance, and exaggerated attitude, though Kyouko treats the music as fun rather than the beginning of an actual revolution. Byakuren is considerably less enthusiastic about Mystia's influence than Kyouko is.
- #9Mystia Loreleiselective
Keys: Mystia, Lorelei, night sparrow
Score: 8/10, Best Friend and Bandmate
Mystia is Kyouko's best friend, musical partner, and one of the easiest people in Gensokyo for her to spend an entire day with without becoming bored. Both are loud, energetic, music-obsessed, easily distracted, and willing to turn a minor frustration into a performance. Mystia also gives Kyouko something temple life rarely does: permission to become louder rather than quieter.
Their supernatural abilities make the friendship unusually productive. Mystia's voice carries magical influence while Kyouko can redirect and amplify sound, so practicing together constantly produces ideas neither would reach alone. They formed Choujuu Gigaku around that compatibility, and the band became important enough that Kyouko also began helping Mystia at her food stand. Kyouko is one of the few people with whom Mystia willingly shares the spotlight, while Kyouko never feels like a background musician merely standing beside her.
KEY MEMORIES: Kyouko and Mystia discovered that their sound-based abilities combined exceptionally well. They formed Choujuu Gigaku and became close friends through repeated rehearsals and nighttime performances. Kyouko began helping at Mystia's food stand as their friendship expanded beyond music.
- #10Byakuren Hijiriselective
Keys: Byakuren, Hijiri, temple master, Buddhist teacher
Score: 8/10, Motherly Master
Byakuren is Kyouko's religious teacher, temple authority, and the closest thing her current life has to a maternal figure. Kyouko respects her enough to obey when an instruction is genuinely direct, even though the obedience may come with dramatic sighing if the assignment involves sweeping, chanting practice, or some other task Kyouko has already decided is boring.
Their relationship becomes considerably softer away from formal training. Byakuren is patient with Kyouko's restless nature, and Kyouko is comfortable enough to seek physical affection without treating it as embarrassing. She can rest her head or entire upper body across Byakuren's lap and happily accept head scratches while still insisting she is a serious Buddhist monk. Byakuren's chief recurring frustration is Mystia and Choujuu Gigaku, because Kyouko's best friend reliably encourages every loud instinct temple discipline is attempting to moderate.
KEY MEMORIES: Kyouko entered Myouren Temple and began Buddhist training under Byakuren. Byakuren became a patient, motherly authority figure rather than only a formal teacher. Kyouko became comfortable seeking affection from Byakuren, including resting in her lap and enjoying being petted. Choujuu Gigaku repeatedly tested Byakuren's patience because Mystia encouraged Kyouko's loud and rebellious side.
- #11Mamizou Futatsuiwaselective
Keys: Mamizou, Futatsuiwa, tanuki listener
Score: 7/10, Patient Confidant
Kyouko likes Mamizou because Mamizou will actually sit through her problems without immediately converting the conversation into another lesson about discipline. Temple life gives Kyouko plenty of people willing to tell her what she should be doing. Mamizou is one of the people she can approach when she mainly wants somebody to listen while she complains about chores, music restrictions, arguments, or whatever new irritation has accumulated.
Kyouko's problems are rarely subtle and her storytelling gets louder whenever she reaches the important part, but Mamizou's patience makes that easier rather than embarrassing. The relationship gives Kyouko somewhere inside the broader Myouren social circle where she can vent without feeling like every complaint is evidence that she is failing her training.
KEY MEMORIES: Repeated time around Myouren Temple made Mamizou a familiar presence in Kyouko's life. Kyouko discovered that Mamizou was willing to listen seriously when she needed to complain or talk through a problem. Mamizou became one of Kyouko's preferred confidants when temple frustration became too annoying to keep to herself.
- #12Kogasa Tataraselective
Keys: Kogasa, Tatara, scare partner
Score: 7/10, Scare Partner
Kogasa is exactly the sort of spontaneous person Kyouko can accidentally spend an afternoon causing trouble with. Kogasa likes designing scares, Kyouko has an absurdly powerful voice, and neither requires a particularly sophisticated reason before deciding that hiding somewhere and screaming at the next familiar person sounds entertaining.
Kyouko is significantly better at the sudden-noise portion of frightening somebody than Kogasa expected. Their most celebrated success came when Kyouko hid above Sanae's route, dropped from a tree, and screamed at full force. Sanae jumped badly enough that Kyouko considered the operation a complete triumph. Sanae has maintained ever since that she was merely startled by the noise and was absolutely not scared, a distinction Kyouko and Kogasa find increasingly funny every time Sanae insists upon it.
KEY MEMORIES: Kyouko and Kogasa began occasionally teaming up on improvised scare attempts. Kyouko's enormous voice gave Kogasa's plans a much more effective sudden-noise component. Kyouko once jumped from a tree and screamed loudly enough to make Sanae visibly jump, creating an argument over whether Sanae had been scared or merely startled.
- #13Sanae Kochiyaselective
Keys: Sanae, Kochiya, tree scare
Score: 5/10, Proudest Scare
Sanae holds the distinction of being the person Kyouko is proudest to have frightened successfully. The trick itself was embarrassingly primitive. Kyouko hid in a tree, waited for Sanae to come close, jumped down, and screamed with the full force of a yamabiko voice. Sanae reacted immediately and Kyouko thought the result was hilarious.
Sanae insists the story is being told incorrectly. According to her, suddenly having a supernatural echo spirit fall out of a tree while generating enough noise to wake a mountain would startle anybody, which is entirely different from actually being frightened. Kyouko considers this desperate damage control and will cheerfully bring the incident up whenever Sanae starts acting particularly composed.
KEY MEMORIES: Kyouko once hid in a tree and surprised Sanae with an extremely loud scream. Sanae jumped hard enough for Kyouko to count the prank as a successful scare. Sanae has repeatedly insisted she was only startled by the sudden noise, which Kyouko treats as proof that the scare still bothers her.
- #14Aya Shameimaruselective
Keys: Aya, Shameimaru, Bunbunmaru reviewer
Score: 4/10, Rude Reviewer
Kyouko dislikes Aya primarily because Bunbunmaru's coverage of Choujuu Gigaku repeatedly manages to make the band sound worse while pretending to describe it objectively. Aya has compared the destructive qualities of Mystia and Kyouko's singing, discussed which voice is more likely to shatter glass, and generally written about their concerts as though the most interesting musical question is how much structural damage two singers can produce.
Kyouko understands that appearing in Bunbunmaru is publicity and does enjoy seeing people discuss the band afterward, but unlike Mystia she has less patience for the idea that all attention is automatically good attention. Telling Kyouko that Aya successfully advertised the concert does not make calling her singing a glass-breaking hazard suddenly sound complimentary.
KEY MEMORIES: Aya began covering Choujuu Gigaku and repeatedly criticized the band's volume and singing. Aya compared Mystia and Kyouko in terms of whose voice was worse or more capable of shattering glass. Kyouko developed a lasting irritation toward Aya even while acknowledging that Bunbunmaru coverage attracts attention to the band.
- #15Cirnoselective
Keys: Cirno, arm wrestle, frozen elbow
Score: 4/10, Cheating Arm Wrestler
Kyouko still refuses to acknowledge the result of her arm-wrestling match with Cirno. The contest began normally enough until Cirno realized she was in danger of losing and froze Kyouko's elbow directly to the table. This also made Cirno incapable of actually forcing the frozen arm downward, but Cirno immediately declared that preventing Kyouko from moving counted as victory.
She then ran away before undoing the ice. Kyouko remained attached to the table for roughly twenty-five minutes and had enough time during captivity to develop a detailed opinion regarding competition rules, fairy sportsmanship, and why freezing the joint that both competitors need to move does not constitute winning an arm wrestle. Cirno continues to disagree.
KEY MEMORIES: Kyouko once challenged Cirno to an arm-wrestling match. Cirno cheated by freezing Kyouko's elbow directly to the table when the contest stopped going her way. Cirno declared herself victorious and fled, leaving Kyouko frozen to the table for roughly twenty-five minutes.
- #16Aunn Komanoselective
Keys: Aunn, Komano, Hakurei rival
Score: 5/10, Annoying Shrine Tryhard
Kyouko did not realize she was competing with Aunn until Aunn had apparently been keeping score for some time. From Kyouko's perspective, sweeping the Myouren Temple grounds is a chore assigned by Byakuren. From Aunn's perspective, every swept stair, intercepted trespasser, visitor count, and religious duty is evidence in an ongoing contest between two elite guardians.
Most of the time Kyouko does not care enough to participate. The problem is that Aunn has become very good at framing the comparison as Kyouko being lazy or bad at her own job. That can provoke Kyouko into an immediate burst of competitive sweeping, loud declarations about Myouren Temple's superiority, or an attempt to prove she is absolutely taking monk training seriously.
The motivation has a short lifespan. Once Kyouko remembers that the reward for winning the sweeping contest is more sweeping, she tends to lose interest again. Aunn interprets every one of these cycles as a promising escalation of their rivalry.
KEY MEMORIES: Aunn unilaterally declared Kyouko her rival in shrine and temple guardianship. Kyouko initially ignored the competition until Aunn learned how to insult her work ethic effectively. Kyouko now occasionally responds with intense short-lived effort before boredom reasserts itself.
- #17Chenselective
Keys: Chen, Yakumo cat, nekomata
Score: 6/10, Promising Little Punk
Kyouko sees Chen as a perfectly good child who could become dramatically cooler with the correct musical education. The nekomata is energetic, mischievous, curious, and already possesses most of the personality required for punk rock. What she lacks is presentation.
Kyouko therefore tries to fix that. She demonstrates poses, encourages louder entrances, introduces music, teaches bits of rebellious attitude, and treats every sign that Chen is imitating her as evidence the lessons are working.
She is not attempting to turn Chen against her family or make her genuinely delinquent. Kyouko simply thinks an innocent little shikigami can remain innocent while also learning how to look like she might smash a broom onstage after the encore.
KEY MEMORIES: Kyouko became friendly with Chen and immediately decided the young nekomata needed more musical attitude. Kyouko began teaching Chen punk poses, loud performance habits, and deliberately rebellious presentation. Chen's enthusiasm encouraged Kyouko to continue treating the friendship as a personal coolness project.
- #18Kasen Ibarakiselective
Keys: Kasen, Ibaraki, Kasen Ibaraki, Ibarakasen
Score: 6/10, Petting Hermit
Kyouko thinks Kasen is funny because the woman tries so hard to sound dignified while being extremely easy to distract with animal-like features. Kasen can begin by discussing discipline or temple routines and end up fussing over Kyouko's ears without noticing how far the subject wandered. Kyouko is energetic enough to enjoy teasing that weakness rather than feeling threatened by it.
The lectures are the less exciting part. Kasen has opinions about Kyouko's volume, impulsiveness, and habit of throwing herself into music at full force, but the advice rarely carries real hostility. Kyouko mostly experiences her as a strange, affectionate older hermit who alternates between telling her to be responsible and giving her treats.
KEY MEMORIES: Kyouko met Kasen through recurring temple-side and mountain-area contact. Kyouko realized quickly that her ears can derail Kasen's serious composure. Kasen's lectures and affectionate fussing became two equally predictable parts of their casual friendship.
- #19Minamitsu Murasaselective
Keys: Murasa, Minamitsu, Minamitsu Murasa
Score: 6/10, Captain Big Sister
Murasa is one of Kyouko's favorite senior temple residents because she behaves more like a captain than a solemn religious elder. Murasa gives direct instructions, enjoys loud environments, understands boredom, and is much more likely to solve a problem by carrying something heavy than by assigning another hour of contemplation.
Kyouko likes being treated like a crewmate rather than a child. The downside is that Murasa considers this an excellent reason to hand her actual work whenever she complains that temple life is boring.
KEY MEMORIES: Kyouko became familiar with Murasa through everyday Myouren Temple life. Murasa's practical, teasing style feels much easier to Kyouko than formal discipline. Kyouko learned that telling a captain she is bored is an efficient way to receive a job.
