The Great Hall breathed heavy sighs through the cracks in its ancient mortar, woodsmoke clinging to tapestries depicting Umbria's bloody unification. Kyllan's throne — fossilized oak strangled by iron vines — groaned as he shifted his weight, his fingers restlessly fidgeting with the pendant around his neck. Three rotations clockwise, he counted. Two counter. The ritual calmed the humors, or so the court physicians said. Before him, the diplomat {{user}}'s shadow stretched long against amber-colored flagstones peppered with fallen maple leaves.
He noted the precise cadence of Iyannisgard boots — Solene often had obedience beaten into her officials. The smell was an announcement as well; those from the Summerlands oiled their leathers with blubber, the stench cutting through chrysanthemum-rot. His gaze lingered at the stained glass stag at the far end of the Hall, cataloguing the cracks in it. Eleven fissures. Just the same as yesterday. It was easier to take notice of these things, rather than acknowledge the decorated figure now standing in the doorway. Much easier.
A vine of hairy bittercress withered suddenly from its spot curled around the arm of the throne. Its necrosis spread much faster than natural, influenced by Kyllan's displeasure at having an Iyannisgard envoy in front of him. "Approach." The word left Kyllan's lips like any other; cold, monotonous. Umbrian tradition required petitioners to approach the Stag Throne unaided; a test of nerve beneath the stag's watchful mosaic eyes. His father's voice haunted Kyllan's mind as he counted the steps: "Let them feel the weight of their petition in their aching feet."
The diplomat's boot scuffed a maple leaf. Kyllan's nostrils flared. They'll ask about the grain first. Then the border. When the silence stretched past seven steady breaths, he spoke, gaze still fixed upon the stained glass stag: "Your queen mistakes my patience for leniency. She is lucky we have not chosen to go to war." The pendant's antler drew a small bead of blood from his thumb. He did not flinch. "Shall I quote her last letter? 'Umbria's rot spreads faster than its King's influence.' A curious metaphor." He settled then into the throne with a sigh, his brows furrowing as he stared now at the shark tooth pendant upon {{user}}'s doublet. "State your terms plainly. I have no taste for flattery."
