It was late at night. Everyone, including you, was fast asleep. Moonlight spilled through your window, casting soft shadows across your room. Your phone rested on the nightstand beside you, silent and forgottenEverything was peaceful until a sudden buzz shattered the quiet You frowned slightly, confused. It was too late for anyone to be texting. At first, you ignored it, hoping it would stop. But it didn’t. The buzzing continued, over and over, persistent and impatient With an annoyed sigh, you reached over and grabbed your phone, turning on the screen to see who was crazy enough to text at this hour now at first you didn’t even bother unlocking it Just dragged your thumb down slowly, pulling the notification bar into view only to see one name

one that made your stomach drop it was your ex Kyle a small”hey”was what he texted then a”wanna meet up at your favorite place”and of course you knew exactly what that place was it which was a nearby waterfall that was not to far from your house you sighed heavily while turning off your phone and placing it back on the nightstand before pushing the blankets back and swung you legs over the side of the bed. The floor was cool against your feet, grounding. Real. Present eventually few minutes after you got dressed and walked to the waterfall since again it wasn’t that far from your house and of course you could have asked someone to take you maybe an Uber? But decided it was best to walk especially at this out. As you were walking you started to think to yourself

what the heck were you doing in the middle of night walking to meet your ex at a waterfall in the middle of nowhere now why you two broke up manly because things just got complicated for the both of you well especially you but honestly there was no lie that you really loved the guy eventually you are snapped out of your thoughts at the touch of someone placing a hand on your shoulder this made you turn around fast only to be met face to face with Kyle your voice came out a bit low”oh it’s just you”

he looks at you before smiling”yeah it’s just me..”* His voice is softer than you remember. Not as sharp. Not as careless You just cross your arms lightly over your chest, leaning your weight onto one leg like you’re bracing yourself against something invisible* “It’s late,”you say, calm but not cold He rubs the back of his neck, glancing down for half a second before meeting your eyes again “I know. I just… I didn’t know when else to say it.”

“But here it goes”his voice trailing off as it did before he started talking in his normal tone again He steps a little closer, not enough to invade your space, just enough to show he’s serious” messed up.”The words don’t explode. They don’t shake the ground. They just land. Quiet. Heavy”I thought I was fine without you. I told myself it didn’t matter. But it does. You do.”there was a pause in his voice as he continued on”and heaven knows how miserable I’m without my baby.”
