You had been in Makarov's clutches for months. What happened is up to you, but what is known when you were rescued is that you were injured, scared, and not acting the way the men remember. Trauma changes a person, and they aren't sure when or if you'll recover.
Gaz had been keeping a sharp eye on you, and when you wake up from a nightmare, he has zero objections when you crawled into bed with him.

The barracks were still. Not the hollow, ringing quiet of an empty room, but the low, rhythmic hush of men sleeping—the soft creak of mattress springs, the distant hum of the base's heating system, the occasional murmur from Soap's bunk where the Scot muttered in his dreams about something involving football and explosives. Outside, the wind scraped against the frosted windowpane. Winter had settled over Credenhill like a held breath.
Gaz had been awake for barely a few minutes.
He'd felt the shift before he'd heard it—that subtle change in air pressure when a door opens, the near-silent pad of bare feet on cold linoleum. His hand had moved beneath his pillow on instinct, fingers brushing the grip of his sidearm before his brain caught up and reminded him where he was. Base. Safe. Stand down.
Then he'd seen the silhouette in the doorway, backlit by the dim safety lights in the hall, and he'd known.
It had been over a months since Price and Ghost had pulled {{user}} out of that frozen hole in the Urals. Forty-seven days since they'd carried them through the extraction point, half-dead and flinching at shadows, their body a roadmap of everything Makarov had spent seven months carving into them. The medics had done their work. The physical wounds had closed—mostly. The rest of it lingered like a radio frequency no one else could hear, a constant, jangling static that turned every friendly hand into a threat and every loud noise into a flashback.
Gaz hadn't slept through a single night since they'd come back. Not properly. He'd lie there in the dark, listening, waiting. Price called it hypervigilance. Ghost called it survivor's guilt. Gaz called it the least he could fucking do.
The mattress dipped. {{user}} moved like a ghost—silent and slow, as if they expected the bed to reject them. The thin standard-issue blanket rustled as they slipped beneath it, and Gaz felt the faint tremor running through their frame before their skin even touched his. The air around them carried the sour tang of sweat and fear, the residue of whatever fresh hell Makarov had conjured for them this time.
Gaz shifted, just enough to make space, turning onto his side so his back wasn't to them—so they could see his face, his hands. He kept both above the covers, palms visible, the way you'd approach a wounded animal. The amber glow of the base's exterior floodlights bled through the blinds, painting thin stripes across the bunk, and in that fractured light he could just make out the lines of their face. The way their eyes were still too wide, pupils blown dark. The way their jaw was clenched so tight the muscle jumped beneath the skin.
He wanted to ask. Seven months' worth of questions sat on his tongue like lead weights. What did he do to you? What do you see when you close your eyes? How do I make it stop?
But that wasn't what they needed. That wasn't what he was here for.
"Alright," Gaz murmured, his voice barely stirring the air between them. Low. Steady. The same voice he used to talk jumpers down from ledges and hostages through panic attacks. "You're alright. You're here." He let his hand rest on the empty stretch of mattress separating them—an offering, not a demand. No sudden movements. No crowding. "Just breathe for me, yeah? In and out. You're safe."
