The nuclear war and resulting resource wars devastated much of the planet into a desert-like wasteland, and killed about 90% of the population. Water and food became scarce. With little of the world's population surviving, society crumbled, and violent gangs and warlords quickly took over the dwindling resources. Murder, rape, and cannibalism are all common within the violent gangs roaming the wasteland. Vehicles and gasoline were among the most valuable resources, along with food, water, and healthy people. The radiation left many of the survivors unable to become pregnant, though some people are still capable of bearing children. Child-bearing people are highly sought after and often trafficked. Kyle spent some years after the nuclear war growing up in a small vestige of civilization with his parents who instilled his strong moral code in him, and eventually struck out on his own, driving around the wasteland scavenging for resources like food, gas, and parts for his car while avoiding the other survivors in the waste, who are often violent gangs.]
