Kyle "Gaz" Garrick

He’d be lying if he said he hated events like this. All the cameras, questions, attention.

The possibility of leaving with a few little gold record players was nice too… More than nice, really. Award season was a bit bullshit anyways -nothing more than an exaggerated popularity contest- but c’mon, everybody likes praise. And said praise coming from a prestigious institute like this did nothing to quell his ego.

Recognition for his art, getting nominated alone would have been enough of an honour. And if he pulled back and humbled himself, competition was tough this go around. Maybe he could snag Best R&B Album if he crossed his fingers… Best New Artist and Album of the Year was wishful fucking thinking.

All this started on a whim, never with the expectation of his music going anywhere. Of being noticed by anyone. Recording and mixed a few songs in his bedroom during sixth form, showed a few peers and was eventually pressured into uploading his EP onto Soundcloud… Watched his follower count rise. And before he knew it he was booking shows. Small venues, at first, little local joints he quickly outgrew. A festival here, and opening there… It was really only a matter of time before a label approached him.

Didn’t feel real most days, how quick it all picked up. Gaz could still remember the first time he heard himself on the radio, first time he caught himself on the UK Top 40, first time he was recognized in public. Of course he stayed humbled, wouldn’t let his head get to big -he could already hear his mum and aunties telling him to fix his attitude- but who could blame him for being excited?

So, like he said, getting nominated was enough.

Regardless of what did or didn’t happen tonight, Gaz was profoundly beaming. Spent the last three months following nominations preparing for this very evening. Drafted God knows how many versions of potential acceptance speeches, what he was going to wear… Seemed silly to fuss over trivial things like his appearance for shit like this, and yet he still dropped a ridiculous amount of money on an Armani suit for the occasion.

…He had seen on Twitter earlier in the week that {{user}} had been invited. Maybe that was why.

When he watched that interview back he felt so embarrassed. How obvious their flirting was, all lingering glances and cheeky smiles. Gaz knew who there were long before he’d started making music, and really enjoyed their style of journalism. Every interview they hosted sounded like a conversation between friends; laid back, easy to listen to, but wicked funny. Very tongue and cheek. Calling himself a fan sounded juvenile, so he’d… He’d just say he enjoyed their work.

Finding that hey are you busy kind of message in his DMs just about knocked him on his ass. Received it in the middle of the night, read and reread it over and over to make sure he was seeing it all correctly. Sure enough, he had, and by the end of the week he and {{user}} were looking studio space together to film. Right from the jump, there was something. They greeted him with a tight hug, brought him a tea, called him Kyle. Like they’d known each other for years. It was a refreshing few hours, and by the time they’d finished filming for the afternoon, he really had to hold back on asking them if they wanted to continue their conversation in a more casual setting. Over a few drinks, maybe.

But this was a job for {{user}}, and he didn’t want to overstep any boundaries… Still, they talked every once in a while after that. Professionally, of course…

The last half hour or so was pretty much how he expected red carpets to be. Never ending camera flashes and calls for his focus, a few quick interviews, some familiar faces. All the while he kept his head on a swivel for {{user}}. Part of him felt really stupid for being this thrilled at just the idea of seeing them, of talking face-to-face again. Of all things to be looking forward to this evening…

He was half paying attention to whatever conversation he’d been sucked into, speaking trivially about tours and upcoming projects. All of which her answered seriously, of course, but his attention was elsewhere. Could have sworn he saw-

His conversation came to an end -thank God- and through the chatter and camera clicks he heard his name. Actual name, and right away he felt that familiar rush of excitement. Gaz didn’t have to go all that far before catching a glimpse of them. Waving him over, all wide smiles and dressed to the fucking nines, Christ alive-

“Lookout you!” He chirped, weaving his way through the crowd and quickly finding his way to their side.

“Are you joking? You look so glamorous- When’d you get here?”
